About this project
What is this story about?
This is an epic tale for children of all ages and adults too. Ettie the bear is Colorado's most adorable bear, who wants to give up his life in the forest to become a boy and do all the fun things that kids do, to sing, to dance and to play.
This story came about from camping trips with my children in the Rocky Mountains. The Mt. Princeton area inspired this story. It is one of the most beautiful areas in Colorado, perhaps the world. I wanted to give my children an appreciation of our great forests, of our environment, and of our wildlife.
Ettie the Bear finds the mischievous Tommyknocker in the abandoned Alpine Tunnel. The Tommyknocker grants Ettie his wish, but his price is the forest.
Ettie the Bear becomes Ettie the Boy and is mesmerized by the world of Man.
The miners descend upon the forest looking for gold.
It is up to Ettie the Boy to save the forest. Will he succeed?
Books are still cool.
Not everyone has an iPad or Tablet PC.
Books are easier to share.
What makes this story awesome?
A few things.
This story is a modern version of Hans Christian Anderson's "Little Mermaid" except the story takes place in the forest.
Ettie the Bear is Colorado's most adorable bear. You got to be a fan of Ettie.
The story is written in simple English for beginning readers. I've got a 7 year old. She loves reading the story. Your child will too.
The story has some strong themes, which include conservation and learning to be happy about who you are. These are great for kids to learn.
The story is set in the Rocky Mountains. Who doesn't love the Rocky Mountains?
Then there is the mischievous Tommyknocker. A real villain. If the Tommyknocker can turn Ettie the Bear into a boy, then he can certainly turn you into a frog for not pledging. :-)
Who drew the illustrations?
Jim Dwyer is the illustrator with experience in character design, books covers, children books, comic books, storyboards. His works includes boweeville the elf and wonder boy.
Currently, Jim has completed 15 illustrations for this project. He'd like to do more if we can successfully fund this puppy. Please don't let Jim down.
Is the Book Done?
Oh, yes, it is. The ebook version is out on Amazon.com. You'll pay $5 bucks more for it there than here. Aren't we nice? We are serious about getting this book into print. We want to go from the virtual world of 0's and 1's to the silky smooth feel of gloss and fresh ink.
By bringing the book into print, we will make the story accessible to everyone. We can donate copies of the book to libraries across Colorado and across the nation.
Because this is going to be fun. We've already given away a kindle reader and wood carving of Ettie the Bear. There will be more surprises to come.
You want to be part of something big. We are putting our backers names on a special sponsors page in each printed book.
You'll get a great book that you can display in your library.
What are the goodies can I get?
We've got some smashing cool rewards for every size pledge. Like I said you can get the digital ebook for $7 bucks. that's $30% off the Amazon price. Isn't buying direct nice?
We are introducing instant ebook download. As soon as you make a pledge of $7 or more, we will email you the link to download your ebook copy. You can make pledge today and get a reward today. How cool is that.
For higher pledges, we thought we'd give you something better than a bar of soap.
For the higher pledges, you will receive physical copies of the book that you can sit it, put a cup of coffee on, or just prop up a table leg. Try doing that with your iPad. I dare you.
Ok, seriously, you'll have a beautiful copy of a great book to display to all your family and friends and best of all it will be a story your kids will cherish.
For a few bucks more: Jim Dwyer, the Illustrator will throw in an original ink sketch of one of the characters.
For a few bucks more
Can you swing $100 for a print?
For really high pledge amounts, we've got something special in-store. You don't need to go to Vegas.
We are lucky to have a local wood sculptor, who's agreed to carve special limited edition Ettie the Bears. Bill Fee is this awesome sculptor who loves to carve bears out of wood. He's got a store in Mantiou Springs, Colorado. Bill invites you all to stop by and visit.
One and only pledge or the Gold Nugget Pledge: We've saved our best for last. For a pledge of $5,000, we will put your company's name on the opening of every ebook. When a reader opens the ebook, the first screen will read: "Your company name" presents "The Little Bear of St. Elmo's Forest." There is only one special Gold Nugget Pledge. This is on a first come, first serve basis.
What will we do with your contribution?
We're going to Monte Carlo to play craps. Yeah, right, I wish. Do you know the printing costs these days? Phil Nanzetta is going to be the big winner. Who is Phil Nanzetta? The Publisher at Signature Book Printing. Phil does a real fine job. It costs us a dear peso. Nearly all of the $3,500 will go to Signature Book Printing. The rest to the United States Postal Service. They promised to deliver your new shiny new book without losing it. I will purchase my wife a bouquet of roses for helping me out. She's been great.
WHAT IF WE RAISE MORE MONEY THAN WHAT'S NEEDED? DO AMAZING THINGS HAPPEN?
Yep! If the book reaches its goal, yep, there's plenty of motivation to keep going! I've got lots of plans for awesome things we could do to make this book the BEST EVER. They include:
•$5,000 = UNLOCKED!!! Jim Dwyer will do another 10 more illustrations.
•$10,000 = UNLOCKED: Special Photography Ebook covering all the places in the story. We’ll hire the best photographer we can find and send him to St. Elmo, Grizzly Lake and the Alpine Tunnel in search of great photos and the mischievous Tommyknocker.
•$25,000 = UNLOCKED: We’ll make an interactive children’s book app where Ettie the Bear will speak. The trees will talk. The wind will whistle. A free copy will be given to all donors.
•$30,000 = Unlocked: Zero Impact Camping Game. This interactive game will be included in the children’s book app to teach them in a fun way about how to behave and respect the forest.
Help! I can't do this without your support. So let's do this.
This is David vs. Goliath. This is Underdog vs. Simon Bar Sinster. This is Rocky and Bullwinkle vs. Boris and Natasha Badenov. We are taking on the publishing establishment. This is true independence. But I need your help to make this project happen. Without your generous pledge, the system wins. The old gray haired publishers chalk up another victory. It's another I told you so. Really?
We're going to change the publishing world together. No more censorship. No more nepotism or cronyism. Let's let the free market decide. That's what self publishing is all about. It's democracy. If you like what you see, then give a little. If you can spare it, give alot. Whatever you give, if you can spread the word about this project that would be such a humongous help.
As they say in Italian films,
Risks and challenges
The risks are minimal because the book is already written and the illustrations are done. The ebook is available for purchase on Amazon.com. Once we reach our $3500 goal, we will schedule the printer to start printing copies.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
