Willkommen!/Welcome! The last days of summer are upon us, but the air is warm, the leaves have only just started to turn, and the Biergartens are bursting with music and laughter. Come! Lay out your tables; open your taps. Your guests await!
Whether you're sitting around the board game table or relaxing under the beer tent, Biergarten is the game for you. Featuring 72 unique illustrations of colorful tables and half-timbered walls, this light card-laying strategy game can be picked up quickly and easily. But, its simplicity hides the tough choices and strategic thinking necessary to make your creation a garden worthy of an Oktoberfest celebration.
For our first print run of the game, we will be also be including one exclusive home card that won’t be available once they sell out. For those of you who've seen Rahdo's review we agree there should be a mobile scoreboard option so we're making the scoreboard three card size pieces small enough to fit in a tuck box, and nice enough to display on your table!
For production, we'll be printing all the components through Panda Games Manufacturing.
Here's a few words from our reviewers check them out and subscribe if you haven't already
"I really dig this game" "its one of those games that has almost no rules...and still manages to be very challenging." - Undead Viking
***German Language Review*** from Brettspielblog
"Biergarten is a refreshing change of theme and one that is well executed" "A very approachable building game" - Across the Board Games
-"I gave it a 5 (out of 5) because I loved it." "I can see bringing this to every game night, it's a good filler and it can come out whenever you need a game." - Meeple Mechanic
We were also voted 3rd out of 30 games by other designers at Design Day 2015, hosted by Stonemaier Games. Come back for more reviews as they come in.
In Biergarten, each player builds their own ‘biergarten' by playing cards from their hand, expanding from a ‘home card’ selected at the beginning of the game.
- Base mechanic: When attaching new cards, players earn one point for each color match on a card edge, up to two per edge. If there is a wall or the colors don’t match, then that edge earns no points.
- Umbrella bonus: Players earn two points for creating a continuous line of umbrellas in a given color.
- Color bonus: Players earn 3 points for making one match of every color.
- Wall bonus: Players earn 6 points for perfectly enclosing their garden within a continuous wall.
Players also have a limited way to rearrange their garden every turn, by either swapping two cards or moving one card.
Play continues as players expand their gardens, working towards bonuses and making matches until one player has scored 15 or more points. Other players will get one more turn to beat the leader. The leader will get one more turn to re-arrange their garden, but will not play any additional cards. Ties go to the person last in the initial turn order.
Will players focus their energy on one or two themes, will they try to accommodate as many tastes as possible, or will they create a little pocket of privacy by enclosing the garden around them? The really clever player will find ways to do them all!

We are Steamboat Gothic Studio LLC, formed to bring to life games that are easy to learn, quick to play, and dripping with theme. We believe we have succeeded with our first project, Biergarten. Biergarten came to life a little over a year ago when co-founder Andrew Sallwasser wanted to come up with a game that was both strategic and quick that he could play with his wife, co-founder Lauren. She has been beating him at it every since. After deciding the gameplay was where we wanted it, we locked down our rules, improved our artwork, and formed Steamboat Gothic. More recently we brought on board an old friend to help us manage our social media, newsletters, and really everything to do with making sure the community stays happy as we get our product ready for you.
February/March - We're going to be putting the finishing touches on the game, drawing the rest of the backers, populating the cards, and getting the files ready for sending to Panda. Happily the campaign will be ending right as the Chinese New Year starts, and not much production would happen on the printing side during this time anyway.
April - Pre-production. We will submit our game to our manufacturer and they will work with us to make the game ready for mass-production.
May/June - Mass-production. At this stage it will be out of our control and in the very capable hands of our manufacturing partner, Panda Games Manufacturing. They will send us copies of the game for approval before shipping the bulk games.
July/August - The games are shipped to us and our worldwide shipping partners.
August/September - We're sending out all the games at this point.
United States – No additional fee · Worldwide -- $6
$4 for shipping is built into every pledge level that requires shipping. For backers within the United States, this $4 will cover all shipping costs and there will be no additional shipping fees charged above the cost of the pledge level. For all other backers, we will charge an additional $6 for shipping. As Biergarten will ship in a small, light package, we will be able to take advantage of the eco shipping options offered by our fulfillment company, Ideaspatcher, and ship to anywhere in the world for the same price. As Ideaspatcher is based in France, this will also be Euro-friendly shipping.
Risks and challenges
This is our first Kickstarter project. We've never done anything on this scale before. However we have spent the last few months doing our research, studying other campaigns, talking with other developers, and laying the ground work not just for a good campaign but also for a good product.
There could be delays in shipping, we are working with a very professional games manufacturer, but this is something we can not directly control. If delays were to arise, we would make sure that all backers are well aware of any problems in the pipeline. Post campaign, backers can expect to be contacted through Kickstarter every other week until all copies have been received.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
