The end of the world can be fun!
The most common theme of humanity is our ability to adapt and survive. That's great, because another theme of humanity is self destruction and war. Everyone has their favourite classic Post Apocalypse movies. Mad Max, A Boy and His Dog, Soylent Green, Logans Run, Cherry 2000, Tank Girl, 12 Monkeys. Waterworld. It's easily one of the most varied and creative settings ever. Our fascination with the end of the world produces great movies, great books, and very great games. It's the goal of this Kickstarter project to create a comprehensive and high quality tabletop role playing game that uses this setting. I want to make the end of the world fun.
That's a question I thought was easy to answer, or common knowledge. I grew up immersed in them however, and took for granted that many others haven't experienced this type of game before. I'm going to do my best to explain how it works and why it's so great.
A TRPG is a game without limits and borders. You never know what's going to happen, and where you'll end up. A group of friends get together and make characters using their TRPG system of choice. The most classic example is Dungeons & Dragons. One player assumes the role of Game Master, and controls the game and tells the story. It's up to the other players to navigate their characters through the world, with the guidance of the Game Master. It's possible to play online or in person, with friends or even complete strangers. While your success is often determined by rolling dice, it's your own ideas and actions that push the game along and make it fun. Your characters get better the more often you play, and it's common to get very invested in the role you've created.
There are other tabletop games which are set in the post apocalypse, but none of them quite capture the feel I would enjoy. Being a huge fan of the Fallout series, I wanted a setting with quirk and charm. There should always be a silver lining of humor, no matter how bleak a situation may seem. I enjoy a more light-hearted experience when role-playing, and a setting that doesn't take itself too seriously. My aim is to produce a game with a much easier point of entry for new players, and a more creative environment for players to explore character creation. Gameplay will be freeform and non-turn based. Each class has unique skills with multiple applications. This means that instead of taking turns attacking until the game is over, players will organically be solving problems in unexpected ways, whenever ideas come to them.
For example, a play test group was tasked with stopping a crazed cult who were raiding towns. I could never have expected them to solve the problem through lighting themselves on fire and launching into the air, but they found a way. Pretty proud of them.
This is a game that encourages creativity, thought and fun. Most systems only approach those aspects as an after-thought, if at all. I'm building my system with creativity, thought and fun as my foundation.
It's been several generations since the end of the world. Nuclear warfare has ravaged the earth, and survivors live in its bones. Mutation is rampant and very few are unmarked by unpredictable bodily changes. Cities have reformed to seek order without a central government to guide them, but the lands between are ruled by power alone. It's common for travelers to group up for safety when going from place to place. Highways are a constant battle, with souped up battle cars slugging it out for area control or passage. Radiation has left its mark on more than just people. The further you stray from the roads and civilization, the stranger things become. What horrors or wonders can be found in the lands where only the brave set foot?
Front and centre of this project is the art. Professionally, I'm a freelance illustrator. I'm applying that experience and passion to this project, to make my book look as great as possible. Every page will get all my love and attention. The end result is going to be a book that you spend hours looking at. Don't forget to sleep.
Here are some examples of the work I've done so far, in mock-ups of what the playbook chapters may end up looking like, and closeups showing detail. All artwork is still subject to change and improvement. Watermarks will not be on the finished product.
ART NOT FINAL AND SUBJECT TO IMPROVEMENT & CHANGE
As of right now, the book will contain the following. More will be added depending on stretch goals, and rate of progress.
- Rules and systems for post apocalyptic play. Includes rules that effect characters, commerce and survival to name a few
- A chapter on character mutations boasting a list of 300 unique moves. (stretch goal met!)
- A chapter on vehicles and what role they play in Broken World
- Setting information such as locations, maps, history, etc
- 6 Main Playbooks
- Editable .pdf's of each sheet (stretch goal met!)
- Page of illustrated example pets for the Drifter class (stretch goal met!)
- Page of illustrated Gods for the Cultist class (stretch goal met!)
- Page of illustrated inventions for the Salvager class (stretch goal met!)
- A double page art spread for each playbook
- 10+ Compendium Classes
- An illustration for each compendium class
- Lists of Common, Rare, and Unique items to be used in play with illustrations throughout
- Examples of creatures and enemies to be used in play with illustrations
- A chapter on traps and hazards
- An illustrated chapter of unique bosses (stretch goal met!)
- A chapter on Settlement and Base building (stretch goal met!)
Each chapter of the book will contain numerous detailed illustrations.
Some of the rules and features planned are as follows:
Mutation Nuclear fallout has soaked into the earth and changed it. No character is completely safe from its effects. A mutation gives characters a unique ability, which can add loads of variety to the standard classes. You start with 1 mutation, and gain further mutations at levels 5 and 10 as you play and are exposed to radiation. For brave players, mutations can be assigned randomly by the Game Master, for better or worse.
Specialization Each class can pick a specialization, which can greatly change the way you play, and the path you walk.
Survival The environment is always out to get you. No matter how hard you try, there will always be tough reminders that humanity dropped the ball.
Souped-Up Rides Everywhere you go, go in style. A system for fixing and modifying all sorts of vehicles will let you duke it out from point A to point B. Weapons, armor, decoration, paintjobs and always, always a worthy name.
This is the tip of the iceberg and the book will be bursting with content!
The most important part of any tabletop RPG is the character sheets. You use these to keep track of everything your character can do, and all the information about them. This section is about the class playbooks that will be the core of Broken World.
Access to the BETA development versions of the sheets will be granted to those who back at the $20 level and above. !!The playbooks will be subject to extensive change and improvement!! This will be largely fuelled by play-tester feedback. At this time, Broken World has 6 Playbooks, or Classes. Here's a breakdown of them as they stand. Which one sounds most like you?
SCOUT A Scout is the group's eyes and ears. As a Scout, your skills are focused on stealth and reconnaissance. Some gathered information and a quick plan are tools you're very comfortable with. Those, and a knife and a rifle. A keep out sign is a welcome mat to you. A "hands off!" is a "please take". There isn't a thing that is off limits to you when you apply yourself.
DRIFTER The Drifter is a wanderer, with a code of honour and a loyal creature companion in the wastes. A complex hero of the wastes, you're guided by your own definition of right and wrong, and it takes you from place to place to place. You're either behind the wheel or behind a gun, and condolences to anyone who might get in front of you.
MUSCLE What are you lookin' at? Keep moving, punk.
SALVAGER One man's trash is another man's treasure has never been truer for you. The world is covered in gold! As a Salvager, you're a junk technician. A refuse artiste. A rubbish virtuoso! You root through scrap and collect the parts you need to fuel your passion. You can build as fast as you can think, and it'll work as long as you have the materials to keep it held together.
MEDIC The medical profession is timeless. There is nowhere you aren't needed, nowhere you aren't valuable. When your comrades are bleeding out, growing extra limbs, or incredibly on fire, you're well supplied to deal with it. You have your own portable medicine cabinet, and you can fill prescriptions on the spot. Mix and match medicines to produce the desired effects....or the desired side effects.
CULTIST The Cultist takes on many forms in the wastes. With the world a wreck, sometimes people need something to believe in, someone to follow. Sure, most would call them lunatics, wearing rags or robes. Performing strange and sometimes upsetting rituals. Shouting at...well anything really. In fact, there's no real proof they contribute anything at all. Just a bunch of lucky coincidences really...Right?
Here is a breakdown showing exactly what you get at each reward tier so there's no confusion as to what you can expect.
Anyone who pledges at the $60 level or above will get their names (or name of choice) on a backer page in the book.

The goal for this project is a pretty modest $3000 dollars. That the minimum I need to make. It would cover costs and help pay back investments. What I'd like however is to raise much more than my goal to really make this book successful. Extra funding will keep me going while I finish writing it. Beyond a certain level of over-funding I can dedicate much more time to the book, and possibly finish it much sooner than the estimated date. With enough funding it would mean I wouldn't have to spend time on other work to pay my bills and could dedicate all my time to Broken World. Even more funding would mean I could hire other talent to assist with the work. I'd love to see that happen, and I'd love to stuff this book full of extras. I'm sure all of you would too. Share this kickstarter with everyone you can to help hit these goals!

Thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll support me and my project!
Risks and challenges
Challenges I could face on the project include issues with printing and shipping these books. I'll be taking great care to select a professional printer, and very carefully planning the shipping of the books. Still, unforeseen issues can arise on even the most professional of projects. That's why I have a large group of friends ready to assist me in dealing with any hiccups that should arise.
Another issue is being Canadian when the majority of my backers will be American. I've attempted to offset this by slightly increasing the cost of the physical tiers and adding an extra fee for international shipping to all the custom physical tiers, to compensate for possible problems with shipping expenses. It's not ideal, but it's much better to be safe than sorry.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
