Tell It Like It Tiz is a comic zine produced by Nicole J. Georges and Marc Parker, which features clients of the Marie Smith Center (MSC) in Portland, Oregon. The MSC is an adult day center which serves functionally- and/or cognitively-impaired elders from the North Portland community. Marc and Nicole have facilitated a weekly zine workshop at MSC since October, 2006. Three issues of Tell It Like It Tiz have been produced in this time, and gone out of print.
The Tell It Like It Tiz Book will compile these issues and over sixty pages of new material into one volume. Our goal is to print 1,000 copies of the book. We believe this will allow the participants' stories to exist in a medium less ephemeral than a zine, and to increase the outreach potential for the project. Tell It Like It Tiz seeks to provide voice for the MSC participants, and to serve as a model for other adult day centers interested in blending storytelling and art therapy.
Tell It Like It Tiz is funded in part by a project grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council. This Kickstarter is undertaken to raise money for local printing of the book, postage to send out copies, and related promotion. If we exceed our goal, we will take the book on a weeklong tour of senior centers and libraries.
Risks and challenges
A challenge that has arisen throughout this project is the unfortunate and impending mortality of our senior friends. We have lost at least fifty percent of our contributors to old age over the course of the past six years, and understand that this is a distinct possibility in the completion of this project--that a beloved contributor may pass away. We hope it does not occur! (knock on wood knock on wood) If that were to happen, we would offer the collected book version of our zine as a memorial for the friends and families of our participants, and would work harder to publicize the book in order to share their wisdom, their histories, and their advice, with the world.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
