About this project

Q. What's it all about?
A. A fun and funny bestiary, The Great British Book of Cryptozoology is an alphabet of fantastic creatures cruelly overlooked by mainstream zoologists. It contains 26 completely original beasts lovingly drawn, each with their own story. FEAR the terrifying Burrowing Dread. WONDER at the marvellous Yesterdragon. FAIL TO SOLVE the riddle of the Quizziloceraptor!

Q. Is this a comic then?
A. There are plenty of drawings but it's as much about the words as it is about the pictures. There aren't any strips or speech bubbles and there is a distinct lack of BATMAN (though there is a type of bat). Illustrated booklet would probably come closer to describing it.

Q. So how would you describe the tone of this illustrated booklet? A. It's whimsey innit? In the finest traditions of British nonsense and general arsing about.

If you've seen anything more whimsical than a flying badger today, we'd like to know. No really, get in touch - it could be an idea worth stealing

Q. The title is very patriotic, does that mean you voted for Brexit? A. Despite the title, this isn't the world's most patriotic book or even particularly UK-themed, although the humour is distinctly British. The thinking behind the title is made clear in the introduction.

Q. So a lot of these Kickstarter things look awesome and high-quality and some look, er, well, you know. How can I be assured this book is in the former rather than the latter category?
A. Fair question. You can see what you think of the artwork from the pictures scattered liberally over this page. As for the content, the author is a journalist who writes for a living making up evil FAKE NEWS, so you can be assured of 100% correct spelling and grammar and a few LOLZ if this sort of thing floats your boat. To reiterate, it's whimsical with a splash of satire.

Q. Is this suitable for my poor delicate children to read?
A. It's not written for children, particularly, but if they got their grubby little hands on it there's nothing that's going to make them spit out their bedtime milk and cookies.

The Ziggurat Tortoise is just one of the incredible creatures to be discovered in this book!

Q. Why aren't you offering lots of super-special rewards for larger contributions?
A. To be honest, this is our first project like this and we're not getting in to the business of posters, badges, signed photos of the author et cetera just yet. Obviously if you want to donate thousands of pounds then go right ahead but hopefully enough interested people will chip in the cost of a pint to make the thing worthwhile.

Q. What's the money being spent on?
A. The bulk of the cost is for printing, with a small amount more for a professional designer to lay out the pages.

Q. How many pages is it? Will it look spiffy?
A. For those who want the technical details, it will be perfect bound, and 148x148mm - so a square book that fits nicely in the hand. It will be professionally printed, natch. A page count of 64 seems likely but it's possible that might change slightly.

UPDATE: We now have the prototype and it does indeed look great!

Q. I have more questions! Questions you haven't answered! A. Go right ahead and message us on the FAQ page. Or just say hello - everyone likes to get feedback and it would be nice to hear from you!

Risks and challenges

The book is written and illustrated so it's nearly ready to hit the printers! If the funding comes through okay, there shouldn't be any hold-ups.

We're looking to launch on July 8th, which is Small Press Day in the UK. Once you've funded, do Tweet about our project to @SmallPressDay and @barlbarian!
