About

Spokenlights is a cutting-edge LED bike light that transforms your wheels into bright, eye-catching displays that make you more visible on the road.

Spokenlights is the industry’s first and only LED bike light that lets you easily design and program your own patterns and animations, using the free downloadable Spokenlights Design Studio.

Easily install up to two Spokenlights LED bars on each wheel of your bike for amazing visual effects and bright, high-impact displays. Spokenlights make your bike visible from all angles, making it a great piece of safety equipment for anyone who rides at night.

Each Spokenlights system consists of one LED bar (32 LEDs) and a “brain” unit that holds the battery pack. What you see here is the prototype: the final manufactured units will most likely be narrower, and black, for an even sleeker final design.

Each “brain” unit can power up to two LED bars, and uses four AA batteries. This gives you the unique ability to add two LED bars to each wheel of your bike, giving you twice the jaw-dropping colors and visual displays.

The free downloadable Spokenlights Design Studio puts you in control of your bicycle’s wheel displays. Easily import, design, and modify your own custom patterns and animations at the click of a button!

We’ve spent years developing a desktop application that makes it easy to create, edit, and upload new playlists to your Spokenlights unit using a simple USB cord. The Spokenlights Design Studio is so easy to use, even kids can do it. Import your own images or draw your own patterns from scratch!

Spokenlights are easy to install in under 5 minutes (for each unit). Each LED bar comes with two slots and two zip ties, one of which is made of steel to prevent theft. Simply thread the zip ties through the slots and around the spoke of your bike, then cinch each zip tie down and cut off the excess. The “brain” unit and battery pack attach to the hub using a rubber strap which makes for quick and easy removal and installation. Once the LED bar and “brain” unit are installed, simply flip the switch on the battery pack and you’re ready to go.

Spokenlights’ LED bars were designed with bicycle-wheel compatibility in mind. The light bars are 5” long, and can be mounted to almost every type of spoke. The minimum length required for mounting is 5.5,” which lets you mount Spokenlights onto kids’ bikes, bike trailers, as well as almost any traditional bicycle.

  • 16.7 million colors per LED
  • Create your own playlist
  • Import or design your own images
  • Fits on all bike wheels with 5.5” spokes and longer spokes—this includes wheels 20” and larger, and most trailers and tag-a-longs
  • Expandable: each wheel can hold one “brain” unit and up to two LED bars
  • 360º visibility
  • Waterproof
  • Easy-to-use Spokenlights Design Studio software puts you in control of your wheel displays

Spokenlights’ ability to display images and patterns is based on something called the “persistence of vision.” Put simply, the eye and brain retain a visual impression for about 1/30th of a second. Spokenlights’ images are displayed one “slice” at a time, and each pattern has 16 slices. As the wheel rotates, the LED bar displays each successive slice of the pattern, which is timed so the display makes a coherent image.

Spokenlights uses an AVR processor that’s paired with 24-bit color LEDs. The system can be expanded to up to two light bars (and one “brain” unit) per wheel.

 James “JimBob” Martin

James is a software engineer with a passion for technology and a profound curiosity for learning how things work. He completed his bachelor’s in computer science from San Francisco State University. James loves to ride his bike, and he was inspired to create Spokenlights a few years ago when he was trying to find a way to be more visible on the road at night. His other techie projects include an automated chicken coop that determines the timing of sunrise and sunset daily, opens on time, snaps a photo, sends out a confirmation email, and then tweets the status of the system along with the current temperature of the coop.

Amy Martin

Amy is a full-time nursing student who loves riding her bike and hiking in her free time. She’s the realist behind James’ wild ideas, and she’s soldered countless Spokenlights prototypes in their backyard studio. Amy loves cycling, but she was concerned about her safety at night. She believes that Spokenlights keeps cyclists safer and more visible on the road. Plus, they’re colorful and fun! She loves to garden and spend time in her yard, which wouldn’t be complete without chickens. She currently has six hens that “help” her garden.

Risks and challenges

The following tasks remain:
• Tooling for the battery pack
• Production run
• Testing the production samples
• Finalizing the playlist
• Quality control for the Spokenlights Design Studio

As with any product in development, unforeseen challenges are inevitable. We’ve spent more than two years refining our design and making prototype after prototype to prove that our concepts are constantly improving. Every step of the way, we’ve been reducing the number of unforeseen challenges that could arise during this journey. We’ve reached a point where we’re confident that we can handle any challenges that arise, and now we need funding to start manufacturing and distribution.

There are some risks and challenges that are outside of our control, including supply chain, parts availability, customs, and lost or damaged shipments. We’ve done our best to ensure that the parts we’ve chosen are common and readily available. We chose our vendors because of their great customer service, amount of stock on hand, and fast turnaround times.

As always, we are dedicated to open communication and honesty. After you pledge today, we’ll keep you informed so you know what’s happening every step of the way. We think of you as an active partner in the development of our product, and we value your support!
