The Both is a record inspired by two very different men.
My grandfathers were both of the Greatest Generation, yet each defined life in contrasting terms. One was a Brethren peace advocate, the other a prisoner of war. One worshipped humility, the other Hemingway. They each lived out their own truth while ultimately shaping another truth for their shared family.
So too are two takes on one tune. This record first explores a vocal arrangement of a song, then yet again as a B side instrumental. The two following versions of Rainbow Midst Life's Willows build their own aesthetic while carrying the same melody.
Here is an instrumental track of the same song:
One doesn't best the other. Instead, each informs the listener's own regard for the shared melody and story of The Both.
The arrangements are diverse, and include:
- Bill Frisell, jazz guitarist with a genuine interest in American folk music.
- Anna & Elizabeth, ballad singers who capture craft & song together.
- Dori Freeman, a Virginia songwriter who tells it like it is.
- John Reischman, mandolin player and writer known for his tone.
- Christian Sedelmeyer & Ethan Jodziewicz, innovative string players.
Dori Freeman tests the vocal mic for a live recording of If I Could Make You My Own.
More on the subjects of this record:
My maternal grandfather Warren 'Boppi' Foote was a WWII prisoner of war, turned Idaho potato farmer. The photo I used for this painting is from his Polish internment prison camp ID card after being shot down at the young age of 25. His burden for the post-war American Dream left him in want, while his pride and admiration of one Ernest Hemingway eventually gave way to an exit on his own terms.
My paternal grandfather Dan West was a Brethren preacher, peace advocate and eventual founder of the organization Heifer International. War found him too, yet his refusal to shoulder a rifle led to his subsequent coordination of ships full of pregnant heifers bound for Spain. This coined the term "Seafaring Cowboy". A family farm was only made by his family, as the road was his row to hoe.
Risks and challenges
Independent release continues to prove its worth in the new musical landscape. Pre-sales are a robust way to get such a project into flight.
The financial goal of this campaign covers 70% of total cost, which include studio expenses, reproduction, paying musical collaborators what they are worth, and publicity.
The process is well underway, and this presale helps to bolster its success. Release is scheduled for late February, with presale CDs and downloads guaranteed to be shipped by the end of January.
Kickstarter is a perfect presale platform, rallying the crowd funding premise into a feasible creative endeavor.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
