The Women and Men Behind Coffee

We want to make a genuine documentary film that will act as a conversation starter about what gender equity means in the lives of women and men involved in the coffee value chain.

Very little film work has been made within the coffee industry especially focusing on this human dimension.

Through this film we believe we can bring a different perspective and capture the reality of what gender equity is in coffee origins and closer to home. We want to raise awareness of its importance for the sustainability of coffee as a commodity and as a community.

We need your support to bring these stories to life and make this documentary film the first of its kind.

Please share our campaign on social media #GenderInCoffeeDoc

The Story

From origin in Central America (Mexico/Nicaragua) to the United States we will follow the story of women and men involved in the production, transformation and consumption of coffee. We will start by spending two weeks living with a coffee family who are part of a cooperative involved in gender equity work, to understand gender dynamics and their perspectives on gender equity.

From there we will follow the coffee through its value chain to the West coast of the United States, sharing their story through the medium of photography and video, and actively engaging people in various roasting houses and coffee shops to have an honest conversation about gender.

We want to confront opinions, feelings and perspectives from all of the women and men to see how we can relate to and connect with one another around the same passion for coffee.

The various events organized will be an opportunity to film interviews with importers, roasters and coffee drinkers and add another dimension to the origin story.

Partnership for Gender Equity (PGE)

The Coffee Quality Institute (CQI) is currently working in partnership with various coffee actors to address the issue of gender inequity in producing countries. This documentary is supporting the effort of PGE to raise awareness about this issue and what can be done.

We strongly believe that we can, through this documentary and the mediums of visual art, support the advocacy work of PGE and reach thousands of people, businesses and organizations around the world to be part of the discussion, to take action and to invest in practical gender work in origin through the initiative "Equal Origins."

The Journey Ahead

From early January 2018 we will work closely with a coffee producer organization in Mexico or Nicaragua involved in gender work. From then until the end of January we will be living with and documenting the daily lives of a coffee family there. From February to March we will be on the road from California up to Washington State (Seattle), organising events and capturing interviews.

The premiere of the documentary will be organized in conjunction with SCA at the World Coffee Expo in April 2018 in Seattle - we hope to see you there!

Who Is Behind The Camera?

Xavier has worked since 2013 in the specialty coffee industry. His focus has been on sustainable development of small coffee producer organizations in East Africa and Latin America. He also fostered the emergence of industry initiatives to make coffee value chains more resilient. He has been involved with gender work in Uganda, Malawi, Congo and Peru with Twin and its associates in the region. During that time he gained first hand understanding of gender work (especially Gender Action for Learning System and the development for Women´s Coffee) within cooperatives and coffee families in various contexts. Xavier is passionated about communication, film making and photography. He is currently a consultant and a film maker within the coffee industry.

Hannah is a visual artist who also studied South Asian Studies and Religion at SOAS University in London. She started her career as a painter and is currently exploring mediums of installation and video art related to ecology and the body. Hannah has also worked supporting young refugees and asylum seekers in the UK and in Lebanon, as well as working with young people with learning disabilities to develop their skills in art making. Hannah is deeply interested in gender relations and in promoting discussion around this issue.

We are both passionate about the human story of coffee and the art of documentary. Our first collaboration this year took us to the Sierra Nevada where we documented the issue of generational crisis in a coffee cooperative.

Risks and challenges

We might be delayed with the start of the film if the identification process of the cooperative and family takes more time. However, we will start our research and contacting organizations between November and December 2017 and we are very confident we will develop good contacts to be ready to begin filming in January 2018.

The Premiere in Seattle might not be possible within the SCA World Expo venue. However, we are already in conversations with the organizers and are trying to find the film a time and a place in the program. We will also investigate other venues close to the World Expo for screening the film.
