About

Do you wish you had a better sketchbook, notebook, or journal? Me too.

Draw every day...to keep abysmal gloom away.

I draw every day. Over the years, I’ve experimented with countless different blank books and always been disappointed. Until now.

Earlier this year, I found a bookbinder, named Ann, who can make me reasonably priced books with all the features I crave. (See detailed list below.) This Kickstarter project is about making books for people who want the same features I desire in a sketchbook, notebook, or journal.

I call this design the Landing Zone Sketchbook because taming wild ideas begins when they land in your sketchbook.

What makes a sketchbook great?

Large enough to capture big ideas but small enough to carry everywhere, every day.
Inviting feel. Not slick or rubbery. Dark to hide schmutz. Landing-zone icon differentiates front and reminds you what a sketchbook is for—giving ideas a safe place to land.
Pages stay open without a struggle. One hundred pages means you have enough space to sustain a productive streak.
Heavy, white (not yellow), acid-free paper with smooth surface that welcomes pencil, pen, and brush pen without show through. No tyrannical lines or grids to inhibit sketching.
A place to stash clippings, emergency cash, business cards, postage stamps, templates, and other necessities.
Elastic closure loop, ribbon to mark your place, radius corners to soften knocks and prevent damage.

WHAT THE CRITICS ARE SAYING

“The binding cloth is soft. Like a cross between a cloud and the belly of a baby mink. I think I’m in love.”

“The paper is smooth and delightful to draw on with pencil or ink. It erases cleanly without damaging the surface.”

“I wish the LZ Sketchbook included a heater for drawing on cold mornings. But for this price, it’s a very good deal as is.”

“The mysterious icon on the cover suggests membership in some elite inner circle. Well, yeah.”

“Don talks about a ‘sketchbook’ but these are prefect for a journal too. Blank pages to record life’s passing parade, bitch about injustices, or noodle ideas for a screenplay.”

“Carrying a notebook makes you look smarter by hinting that you’re the kind of person with valuable ideas that are worth recording.”

Why two? All of the pledge levels are for multiples of two sketchbooks so I don’t have to diddle with single copies. That helps keep costs down. If you really only need one sketchbook, you’ll have one to give away to a lucky friend.

Original drawing. Pledge level D includes an original drawing. Don picks the subject. It’s bound to be something weird. It will arrive loose and require matting and framing. If you prefer to have me draw in one of the sketchbooks, you’ll have to say so when you make your pledge. That might be a good reward choice for someone who prefers rare collectibles.

TESTING

I tested a prototype of the LZ Sketchbook and was delighted. Here are some of my drawings from the first week of testing.

SCHEDULE

When will you receive your rewards? All the production details have been worked out and the prototype tested. As soon as I see support for this project, I can ask the workshop to start the first production batch. You can be making notes and doodling in December 2019, maybe sooner. If a second batch is needed, those sketchbooks should be done in January 2020.

Blank books like this make great gifts. Why not just get ten?

SHIPPING

Where to? Kickstarter will add the cost of shipping to your pledge based on where you live.

International shipping. In some countries, customs duties may be applied to print shipments. I have no way of predicting if they’ll apply to your shipment. Customs inspections are very arbitrary and willy-nilly. Most shipments slide through without any extra duties, but a few sponsors may find that a customs fee has been slapped on. I can’t predict it or avoid it. Customs costs have been built into shipments to Australia and the European Union. Everywhere else it is a gamble. If you can’t tolerate the notion that you might get hit with a customs charge, you probably shouldn’t support this project. Or maybe you should move?

Pay attention. If you are an international sponsor and receive a tracking number when we ship, track your package daily to make sure it doesn’t get hung up in the system and returned to me. Don’t just assume it will show up at your door. Shipments have a way of getting stalled when they are nearly at your house, and monitoring the status of the tracking number allows you to intervene promptly—before the authorities send the package back.

Shipping is provided by our capable and multi-talented partners at Fulfillrite. Our Fulfillrite friends are fast and they do things right the first time.

Title page includes drawings from Don’s sketchbooks. Some are parts of my previous Kickstarter projects. Recognize anything?

LOOSE ENDS

Updates and progress reports. Sponsors of this project will receive periodic updates through Kickstarter as the project unfolds but not so often that you think I’m an obnoxious pest.

Questions? Send me your questions and if I know the answer, I’ll add the Q and A to the FAQ section of this page.

Leftovers from my previous Kickstarter projects are available while supplies last at www.calamityware.com. Not only is this a good place to find some unusual gifts, but it is the only place you’ll find the world’s greatest shower curtain and the amazing book, Monster Etiquette.

Risks and challenges

This is my 43rd Kickstarter project. I’m starting to understand how they roll, so the risk is relatively small. The design is complete and the prototype tested. Only proven bindery techniques are called for—no technological innovations are required.

Of course, the project is still vulnerable to all the problems that fickle fate can throw at us (meteorites, wrinkles in the time-space continuum, fallible human beings, etc.). For example, in the extremely unlikely event that there are more pledges than I have sketchbooks, the bindery will have to make a second batch. If that many people want LZ Sketchbooks, I’ll be truly flabbergasted.

I assure you, this project will get my almost-full attention until production is successfully completed. I haven’t let any of my Kickstarter sponsors down yet. Stick with me.
