Reddit AMA?

Posted by Roxlou Games (Creator)

A few backers have asked about this, so we thought we'd take an informal poll. Who thinks it would be interesting to have one or more of us do an "Ask Me Anything" thread on Reddit?

We're not all that well known, but some backers feel that there would be some public interest in Joe's work on Dishonored and his articles on video game violence.

Let us know in the comments!

This link might help: it's the AMA for Akaneiro: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comments/16z1lk/ama_im_american_mcgee_game_designer_and_founder/

The gaming subbredit is: http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming. But note: "No Kickstarter, Steam Greenlight, et al. "reminder" posts. Submissions about new projects or major updates to existing ones are allowed." I think there should be a way of framing a post here, since presumably there wasn't any previous announcement.

I don't think there is a lot of point in making your own subreddit (community) since noone new is likely to read it.

      I think it's a good idea!

I figured it would be obvious. I just worry about you is all. Don't forget your scarf and mittens.

Yeah, let us know about the when and stuff. We can shield you in an aura of niceness. However, if the crowd really sours I may turn on you because peer pressure.

@Lewis I understood this AMA to mean a period when the devs are actually continually online to answer questions in real time. That's something that Arenanet sometimes do on Reddit, but of course it does require that people know *when* you are going to be online.

      @Lewis
Thanks for the tips! We spend a bit of time on Reddit and have participated in AMAs before (especially when Raf and Harvey, the co-creative directors of Dishonored, were on there). We wouldn't dream of trying to control Reddit. There lies madness.

We contacted the moderators and they've added us to the schedule, so they don't have a problem with the subject and wouldn't take it down. We're following up with an update on the specific details in a few minutes.

      Thanks again folks!

You're probably aware, but at the risk of saying something obvious I'll put this out there anyway. If you do an IAmA/AMA, it could go any number of ways. I've seen it help Kickstarter projects dramatically; I've also seen it not have much of an effect. Sometimes mods take them down. I'm on Reddit fairly often, but I don't really know all that much so I have no idea why.

The important thing to remember is that you don't really get to set the agenda (ahem, Woody Harrelson). People want to be informed or entertained, not promoted at. Say what you do, what you've worked on, mention the articles you've written and your current project, and then answer questions as best you can. Someone should cross-post to r/games (not r/gaming), since your AMA won't be of interest to everyone browsing the IAmA section.

Thanks everyone. Sounds like there is nothing to lose. Time is limited (obviously) so we probably won't get to promote it all that well, but maybe the upvote process on Reddit will be enough to gain some interest.

Now we have to figure out how to even do this...

I certainly wouldn't participate (I don't do reddit), but it could be a very good resource to bring new people in on the project.

I don't know too much about reddit but I just looked it up and it seems like there are a fair few people on that site. Could be a good idea. I would like to see all members of the project be a part of this. It would be nice to ask questions about the art and music etc...

Good idea - but it would need some publicity before hand otherwise you will just get backers here who have a reddit account.

I believe it would be a good idea.

I would upvote you. Go for it!

I'm not in the reddit thing, but by definition, some people are and those people could have never heard of Unwritten : so, in short, yeah, do it.

That is a very good idea. It will raise a lot of awareness and be really good for the campaign. Also make sure to cross-post the idea at r/gaming and r/games. More so the latter because I think the community there would be especially interested in the AMA.

I don't really know reddit, Joe or Dishonored, so I don't see much a point in these.

Having said that, I guess some people DO know these things. It shouldn't hurt, as long as it doesn't take too much of your actual game-making time!!!

Any publicity is good publicity at this stage in the game

I think this would be a great idea, it would both spark discussion and raise awareness of the game a great deal.
