“We Travel a Lot” is a hundred copy artist edition. The edition consists of a 12 inch vinyl, a 16x30cm fine art print photograph and an eight page 30x30cm booklet with the accompanying texts and more images which all come in a specially designed folder.
It is a collaboration between the visual artist Nika Radić and the DJ and sound artist Corin Arnold aka ED2000.
As things in art often happen, the work is the result of several unpredictable things happening. Nika started working on an art piece during a residency in Goethe Institut’e Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto. However, the work took her somewhere else and she ended up doing a completely different work which is a video about travelling, being a foreigner and migration. The work needed sound, so she asked Corin to help her just a bit with the sound, but then this work took over and they ended up making a sound piece that they liked so much that she exhibited it as a sound installation on its own. Corin took the work even further and made a full ambient composition with some of the material they used for the piece they did together. “We Travel a Lot” is a story Nika is telling about her experiences in Japan and the situation people find themselves in when they go to foreign countries. She is talking in Japanese and the whole piece is a soundscape of her three months mainly in Kyoto, but also travelling to other places in Japan. The atmosphere of the streets, nature and music is audible together with the voice. The whole text is reprinted in the booklet that accompanies the record and there is also an English translation. For people who don’t speak Japanese, the sound of the language reflects the barrier one cannot so easily overcome in a new culture. On the other hand, Japanese speakers hear a story in which a foreigner gives new insights to Japan. The photograph that is a part of this edition is a photograph from the series she has made in Japan during the same time.
Nika has been working with topics of understanding and cultural translation for years and this is a logical progression of her work. Corin has been DJing since the mid 70’s when he started in London but has been living in Berlin since he moved in 89 to West Berlin. Right after the Berlin wall fell, he moved to Berlin Mitte where he lives until today and where he has been working as a full time DJ ever since. He is best known as an ambient DJ and has for years created soundscapes in chill out floors of the most famous locations. Although he has made numerous sounds over the years, this is the first time that he is actually publishing an ambient track.
All the editions and its elements are numbered and signed by both Nika and Corin.
Risks and challenges
The sound tracks are made, mastered and ready to be pressed. The photograph print is even already financed (yeay!) and the folder and the booklet have to be designed and printed (we'll keep you posted)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
