Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with part 1 of this months update!

We have been very busy getting ready for GDC 2019 and will have some screenshots and a video showcasing a near complete version of the Medical Level.

While we are at GDC we’re going to be hiding some stickers around the conference. If you find one, take a picture and tweet at us @nightdivestudio with the #remembercitadel to win a prize! (we will be posting hints on locations on our social media when the stickers go up!)

Remember, Remember Citadel?

The current status looks extremely good. Thanks for the video and keep up the good work.

@Shaun Gupta, Ok cool! I really like the idea of not using save/load system and have actual lore around Restoration Bays - and pay extra for not being cautious enough.

    3. Shaun Gupta on

@Niezbo, I know they have a design for the Restoration Bays (which are a similar concept from the original game, as opposed to what you're mentioning, which is technically from 2) as they've showed them a bit during streams, though I think it's too early to say if the mechanics will be changing at all. They've pretty much said they'll be there, though.

      I am so hyped!
Can't wait to get t-shirt too!
Have a question: do You guys plan to add Quantum Bio-Reconstruction Machine with all the mechanics involved around it?

Mmhmm! Pretty damn cool screenshot, Nightdive! It's hard to wait for finalized game, for me, System Shock 1 is the best game ever made :)

Thanks for the reply @Shaun. Looking forward to the future updates and demo videos. I'll check the systemshock.org summaries in the meantime.

I don't know what to think about this, to be honest. Feeling pretty neutral and indifferent, I live in Europe so this has no significance to me. I just hope that eventually, some year, we actually get the game. I paid for collector box and artbook and for me, that kind of money is big since my income is very low :(

    9. Shaun Gupta on

I think we're all anxious to see more juicy tidbits for sure. ;) I know when the initial blockouts were done, there were some images of some of those in the updates, but greybox isn't the most interesting thing to look at. Definitely looking forward to seeing some later levels too and that's good feedback. Some AI is reportedly already in so hopefully we'll see some of that soon.

Discord and here are the most official places for discussions, but a lot of people at SystemShock.org like to discuss the dev streams, etc. Glad to help sum things up where I can; icemann also posts summaries and Synaesthesia (from NDS) sometimes chimes in as well, so it's definitely worth checking out.

    10. krayzkrok on

Hey @Shaun, by the way thanks for the systemshock.org heads up. I really like those bullet point summaries you're posting about the streams. I don't have time to watch entire streams so that's a great thing you're doing.

    11. krayzkrok on

Thanks Shaun. I do think Sandor has a point, I've seen it happen with a lot of Kickstarter projects. The need to share juicy stuff with the media and at conferences is obviously necessary, but it does create that feeling that backers are the last to hear about stuff. Reminding us that we'll be getting our own juicy info probably helps. Mentioning that the t-shirt might be available to backers is a no-brainer, really. :) We've stuck with Nightdive through this less than optimal process, throw us a bone guys. Or we might be forced to wear t-shirts saying "Remember Backers!"

Having said that, Andre's right - these monthly updates have been great so please keep it up. A bit more info on how later levels are looking, even just blocked out with basic textures, or how AI is being implemented might be cool, but I'm a lot happier with where it's heading compared with a year ago (to put it mildly). Looking forward to reading the proper update soon!

    12. Shaun Gupta on

      Heya folks,

      Just a few notes. =)

This is Part 1 for a reason. More updates are prettymuch guaranteed out of GDC. The dev team has been working hard on getting things ready for it, so I'm sure there will be stuff to show. This update was more to get some excitement going and let people know more is coming quite soon!

Also, please don't feel just because there's a presence at GDC that any backers are second-class citizens. Many people (me included) aren't going to get to be there, but that doesn't mean there aren't going to be new things for *all* backers to see out of it. Sure, there is a marketing side to events like this, but it's a pretty important event for game developers to network, show projects, etc., which is good for the company, game, and by extension, backers in the end.

I too hope to get one of those shirts!

Re the dev stream feedback, it's understandable that not everyone can take the time to watch them or is interested in them. They do show a lot of progress, but it tends to be summarized in the monthly updates. There haven't been a lot of videos as of yet (though there have been some), but that should become easier as more of the game approaches a more polished and interesting-to-show state. I too would like to see more of this, and I think the constructive feedback on what you'd like to see for communication in the future is helpful.

It's nothing official, but SystemShock.org also has a thread in the Remakes & Sequels section discussing the dev streams and often summarizing what's new in them, so that might be worth checking out if you'd like to quickly see what the dev streams have been talking about.

Personally, I can't wait to see what comes out of GDC!

@Andre: It's perfectly fine to voice your personal opinion here just like anybody else. But please, don't call other people's opinions false and try to tell them how to feel or behave because this, just like the opinions that you're so eager to judge, is simply your own personal opinion.

@Nightdive Studios: As for the dev streams on youtube, I wasn't aware of them. It's a nice idea in general and may be interesting for those who have the time to watch a dev work for a few hours and are interested in the current state of various parts of the project. For me, they are not that valuable. I would be happier with some regular updates about what's the progress at a higher level. What is finished to what extent, what's the focus of this and that team now, what is still left to do, what kind of challenges or roadblocks are out there estimated milestones, etc. You know, stuff that you would bring to a stakeholder meeting instead of the things you talk about during daily standups. Also some demo videos where the team plays or shows off certain parts of the game would be welcome from time to time. I'm more interested in seeing even a half baked game in action then how the assets are created.
And don't take me wrong, I'm not saying that these dev streams are useless and you should stop doing them. I'm just mentioning that I'm not the target audience and would be happier with something else.
Thanks for the answer and hope that all the feedback through these comments help so that we all can see more interesting and valuable updates in the future.

I can't go to GDC, so I'm definitely getting one of those shirts if they go up for sale! Looks sweet!

      Hello~
Let me address a few things from the comments:

      - I am so glad people like the shirt, we will probably have it in the shop shortly after GDC
      - As for the line to keep an eye on our social media, that was for the contest during GDC
      - This is part 1 of a 2 part update, our devs are hard at work for GDC right now (next update this month)
      - We have had a plethora of great updates, please be sure to read them all!
      - Please catch up on the Dev streams from the Stream playlist (we stream the dev work live) https://www.youtube.com/watch…

and as I say every update, please join our developer discord, we answer questions regularly:

Some of you guys are unbelievable. They give out rock solid updates for the better part of the year showing a lot of in game progress. They give out one 2 part update because they are very busy with current projects and GDC and the world ends.

      get over your selves please.

GDC update part 1? I suppose you will eventually give us GDC part 2. But no progress on the game. I personally dropped all hopes long ago. Clearly I was right in doing so. But it does not matter that much to me anyway. I was seeing this project as a nice-ish, yet not needed bonus for System Shock 3. What really saddens me is the outcome of SS3, which seems pretty unstable at the moment.

I'm with tommynocker001 and Sandor Legoza. This is a pretty sorry update.
I don't care about free advertising I can wear for you if I'm privileged enough to go to GDC, I want to see demonstrable progress. How about a fly-over of the "near complete version of the Medical Level"? To be fair I don't check out all the updates, maybe other ones have been better, but the ones I have seen aren't very encouraging.
As for "Remember, Remember Citadel?" Come on guys... https://www.chargrilled.com.au/t-shirts/prodimages/staticimages/square/a0memberberries_a_White.jpg

That t-shirt is seriously too cool to not sell to fans that can't attend GDC! Unless you don't like money, I guess...!

    21. Chris J Capel on

I second the common comment - please, is there any way to get that shirt for the 21,000 or so backers who can't attend GDC? That is probably the coolest shirt I have ever seen, and absolutely perfect for me. I love wearing gaming shirts that only make sense to people who have played that game series, like a T-shirt friendship code! Please make it available.

I presume we'll get to see the new GDC video and screenshots too, right?

Is that it? Our update? Sheesh... I will stay tuned and wait to see if there is more, but if this is it for another month... this company are bad at talking to their customers!

    23. Missing avatar

      Sandor Legoza on

Again, backers being 2nd class citizens. The message is clearly this: "We are bringing the shiny new stuff to show off on GDC so we can raise more attention and money for the game. If you can come, good for you. If not, it's your bad." and "Want some news about the game? Then stay tuned and follow us in media."

Well, as a backer who put trust into the project and dished out money in advance the least I would expect is getting informed about progress on the game before the rest of the world and getting some backer exclusive material. To be honest, I'm not that thrilled about the progress of the game (according to what you've shown us so far) and the effort you put into communicating with your backers. Being a backer feels more like being a looser than being respected.

      Well, that's how I feel.

Very nice shirt. How sad I can't drop away my Wife, Kids and job in France to come to meet you in San Francico...

Any way for me, hardcore supporter and backer to get one of those shirts in french XL French size?

      If for free I'm taker :)) .

If not for free please point me the online shop where I can order one for my location (France).

      Thanks by advance.

Long way from Germany to San Francisco... Can't be there :(
Are there other ideas for us longtime Backers to get one of those Shirts?
