August Update

Posted by Nightdive Studios (Creator)
Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with this month’s update.

This update is going to brief as we enter into the final stages of our “Adventure Alpha” milestone

We also have some exciting news to share - During Daniels stream the final BSP was carved out for the medical deck and the block-out was completed! System Shock is a massive game and now that the entirety of the original map has been translated into UE4 the real fun can begin!

While Daniel finished the blockout Jonathan has been busy placing the original (albeit updated) SS1 textures. Here are some comparisons with the original game.

I want to stress that these are the original textures and not the final art!

We also have a new artist joining our ranks! Please welcome Mathilde to our team - she’ll be helping populate Citadel Station with tile sets and props! Here’s her latest work:

Here’s an update on the elevator door in-engine - it’s looking certifiably cyberpunk :)

System Shock: Enhanced Edition Update!

We had a slight delay with the final release of the source port - we wanted to ship with full support for English, French and German languages and localization took a bit longer than we anticipated. We also want to include new Achievements for the Steam version - got any fun ideas for achievements? Tag Daniel on Discord with your idea!

Our current launch date is September 1st!

If you still haven’t checked it out you can still opt in to the Beta on Steam!

You can opt-in to product betas by right clicking the System Shock: Enhanced Edition in your Steam Library and choosing "Properties". Next, from the properties window select the tab titled "Betas". From this page select the “SOURCE PORT” beta from the drop-down menu.

Forsaken Remastered!

Our core Nightdive team, the developers that brought back Turok and Turok 2: Seeds of Evil, are pleased to announce that Forsaken Remastered will be available for purchase on Steam, GOG, Humble, and Xbox One!

Developed by Probe Entertainment and Iguana Entertainment and first released in 1998 for PlayStation, PC and Nintendo 64, Forsaken was a vision of a dystopian future where science has gone out of control. Scavengers from all over the known worlds have come to Earth to loot the remains of the technology that can found in underground tunnels. But beware! You must fight your way past automated defenses and the scum of the universe to find the treasures hidden on each level.

I rather hope you'll include those updated old-school graphics as either an optional feature or an unlockable one.

A considerable improvement, but still too much HDR for my taste.
      Keep up improving!

    3. Arkam on

Keeps looking better and better! Hopefully we'll get it just before the Multi-Corps actually take over...oh wait...

Another interesting update folks, keep 'em coming. Have to say there's something strangely satisfying about that door opening and closing GIF, the staggering layers really give something as mundane as a door quite a lot of character.

Nice to hear Forsaken got some love from the T/T2 team, had a blast with that one as a kid on the N64. Looking forward to trying it out on a modern pc system!

    5. Shaun Gupta on

@Jason Fourier, I can confirm you are looking in the right place and that "new_beta" is indeed the source port for System Shock: Enhanced Edition. I have the same thing.

    6. Elliot Jenner on

So when are you going to make Freespace 3?

Thank you guys for making it back on track!

Excited again to see this finally going in right direction, kudos!

All nostalgic cyber thumbs up from Norway! Best of luck to you all, guys!

Kudos to the team for the blocking, object modeling, textures, and everything else that's contributing to the outstanding visuals for this new version of System Shock!

Now we're going to have to start talking about the hard part: the mechanics. ;) I'm hoping you choose to implement the original game's four difficulty modes in the four areas of Combat, Story, Puzzle, and Cyberspace. This is an enormously valuable way to enable lots of gamers with differing playstyle interests to enjoy this game.

However, if for some reason you elect not to implement this feature, then I look forward to hearing your plans for combat mechanics, including the enemy AI that was discussed in the August 13 stream. I hope you will tread lightly here and not believe that this is an area that needs to be amped up a lot -- please don't insist on making combat so continuously difficult that it interferes with the fun of exploring the places and lore of Citadel Station.

Great to see you guys finally rocking it! I‘d also love to see the original textures as an optional feature in the game. Thanks, this is a dream coming true!

Glad to see this project is back on track so well!

      Loving the updtate!
If you zoom that first door GIF 200% it looks like 90's game CGI cutscene, which is a very pleasant aesthetic in my opinion. What specifically makes it so stylish is gif dithering effect. Can we have some optional cosmetic shader that applies 256 color palette and dithering filter on the game? Borderlands had signature black outlines, Deus Ex Mankind DIvided had sharpening filter, i think dithering could fit the retro future aesthetic you guys are going for. (Just make it optional)

    13. Jason Fourier on

      Looks great!

As for the source port, I looked at the list of betas in Steam, and I only see two options: NONE and new_beta. I don't see a "SOURCE PORT" option. Am I looking in the right place?

    14. Morkislair on

@nitrium Sometimes you get carried away with what some tech allows you to do and don't realise you've gone astray. Luckily for everyone, Nightdive didn't double down when they fully realised it, they put a full stop to take time and consider, knowing full well we would be angry. And now they are making up for itin very good ways, I might say.

This comment can also count as a "glad to see you're making and showing progress in the right direction!" Btw, will the Adventure Alpha and the System Shock Source be available through GoG too?
(Also, I saw the Forsaken release there, and was very happy about it: Descents-like are rare enough as it is ^^ )

    15. Shaun Gupta on

@benedict carter, there's been quite a bit of discussion of having the updated original textures as either an alternate mode (perhaps after you win the game) or easter egg. A LOT of feedback has come in in that regard, and I know the devs have mentioned they want to do it too.

Happy to see the project is back on track as of the last few updates. Keep up the great work!

    17. nitrium on

Good to see everything is back to delivering the original campaign promise - i.e. remastering System Shock. Pretty sure, it's all anybody here wanted. I never understood why this project was ever allowed to get so distracted from delivering what us backers backed, but it's encouraging to see it's back on course.

holy **** those are some nice looking pics in UE4. And some nice door gifs!

"I want to stress that these are the original textures and not the final art! "
      - While Im looking fwd to seeing whatever the final art is, can you guys leave some option (eg "legacy texture mode") in the game to have original textures in the final product? I think it would be a blast to play through with Citadel looking like that.

    19. Kevin M. Brown on

The unfortunate Transformer door... We can't all be Semi-trucks.

I just want to say thanks for getting back on track with the original scope. I was doubtful, but things are looking great. No more detours please!

    23. Shaun Gupta on

w00t! Looking fantastic! Really love all of Jonathan's awesome reworking of the original textures. Also, Mathilde's door is one of the ones I've been waiting to see because I liked the version in the Unity demo so much (the way it felt and sounded opening it). And the elevator door is just SICK (part of me misses the gold a bit, but this probably makes more sense...though I'd still love to see it gold somewhere, like maybe Executive =oP). Keep up the fantastic work - loving the regular updates and greatly look forward to them each month.

Even with the original textures it looks fantastic. I’m so excited things are back on track
