July Update

Hello backers! It’s Stephen from Nightdive with this month’s update.

We’re busy reaching our September milestone which we’ve dubbed the, “Adventure Alpha” as it will be reminiscent of the original game with the difficulty set to zero. You’ll be able to freely traverse Citadel Station without the presence of enemies, pick up items, listen to audio logs, read emails and complete the game’s objectives from start to finish.

We were expecting to have all the levels blocked out by September, but with no other details...however, Jonathan has been able to apply the textures from System Shock to Daniel’s BSP giving us an insightful look into the original game. The textures have been modified to take advantage of PBR rendering and lighting placed to mimic the original. Here’s a first look…

Keep in mind these are the original textures and not the final art! Not only will it make the Adventure Alpha more interesting but it will provide the team with a blueprint of how to approach updated art, lighting, level design, etc.

Besides that we’ve got a few assets and screens to share!




Robb has been working very hard on re-conceptualizing and revisiting some of the common items and elements on board the station. Objects such as doors, lifts, and items like the dermal patches are all seeing new iterations.

System Shock: Enhanced Edition Update!

We’re anticipating the release of the System Shock Source port to be at the end of the month!  

If you still haven’t checked it out you can still opt in to the Beta on Steam!

We wanted to give a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who has been playing and reporting bugs and making suggestions!

You can opt-in to product betas by right clicking the System Shock: Enhanced Edition in your Steam Library and choosing "Properties".

Next, from the properties window select the tab titled "Betas". From this page select the “SOURCE PORT” beta from the drop-down menu.

      @Stephen Farrell, you should have gotten an initial BackerKit survey quite some time ago (early 2017), but I don't believe there were any additional surveys for your tier after that. If you didn't receive the BackerKit survey, please submit a ticket here: (There is sometimes a backlog of requests, so patience is appreciated if you don't hear back immediately.)

      I am a backer at the Cyborg Enforcer level but have yet to receive any surveys relating to this project.
      Have I missed anything important?

      @Bobby Gomez, no worries. I was able to confirm they are still catching up with tickets, so for those who've submitted one but it hasn't been addressed yet, it still should be addressed relatively soon. Everyone at NDS appreciates your patience.

      I have not get survey in my email. I checked spam folder and still not there. I also contact them and I have not hear from them for like two weeks.

      I will admit that this looks better and it seems that finally we can see some progress, so maybe it is time to bury the hatchet and let this guys work.
      In the end, the main issue for me was the lack of transparency and the fact that Nightdive used the money from the kickstarter to make a different thing than the remake, but both are in the past, and the devs are not to blame on these decisions...

      @Marcus Heidger, you should have received the initial BackerKit survey quite some time ago (probably early 2017), but there are no additional surveys for the Cyborg Assassin tier as nothing extra is needed to fulfill those rewards. If for some reason you never got that initial BackerKit survey, please submit a ticket to - thanks!

      Zangdaarr, so the System Shock Enhanced Edition Update (separate from the remake) is based on the source code for System Shock 1 that Nightdive recently was able to obtain and release. They've essentially rebuilt the game to run natively instead of with emulation, so it should run smoother and support higher resolutions properly (ie. no weird text issues at higher reses). It also offers a few other nicety enhancements and options and uses Macintosh assets, which in some cases were higher resolution than their DOS equivalents. The most prominent example of this is the audio log people portraits, which are much clearer.

      Concretely what is the system shock update ? I already had SSEE on my computer and it was working fine, I have trouble to grasp the extent of this update

      Yes, I agree with the comments below, this is starting to look really promising, and having the option to switch to the original textures would certainly be cool.

      I'm much more optimistic now from this update. I'm really glad you guys eventually listened to reason from the backers and reeled yourselves in after your disastrous attempt at re-imagining the game. Look at how good it looks now even just using the original textures with some basic lighting, colour me excited and optimistic about this project again. Just shows how well made the original game is and how unique this games futuristic architecture still is.

      I'm hopeful that this isn't going to just wind up a superficial reskin of the original levels as a consequence of the team having to reel in their bigger ideas a few months ago. I hope there are some surprises at least.

      Ah, this is awesome ! I'm a big adventura game fan (Myst, Obduction, Journeyman Project, The Witness) and being able to just explore and look around, without the fear of being killed, is great. Please include that mode in the final game !

      Great job! I agree with others, it would be great to have an option to play with the original textures. There is something special to them, some fuzzy feeling of authenticity.

      What I meant to say was to add me to the list of people who'd like for there to be the option to switch between the original textures with PBR and the new ones. The game honestly looks just fine even with the original textures.

      It also correlates more with the "remake" aesthetic rather than reboot.

      Well I'll be! Some exciting progress! Nice going, guys! This is looking really cool. Like the others say, there's something interesting about the original textures... I think there's something to be said for a stylised look over trying to achieve gritty ultra-realism, especially given how angular the ship design is.

      I certainly wouldn't be adverse to being able to play the game from start to finish with a better interface and lighting. I'll be honest, I'm not that fussed about trying to make the game look ultra-modern. It's an old game, just make it fun to PLAY!

      Please don't take this as a criticism of the work being done on the new textures, but wow -- the look of the improved original textures in the rebuilt Unreal levels is fantastic! As someone who's played the original System Shock every year since its release, I would absolutely love to be able to play your new version with this visual aesthetic. It's exactly how I imagine Citadel Station looking (before I remember the more blocky reality).

      If it's not possible to make these textures an option in the new version, I understand. But please count me as someone who'd be extremely happy if this could be included.

      To the larger point of the update, thanks for keeping in touch with your backers. The level of communication from the team -- not just talking about what's being done, but *showing* it in live streams -- has been outstanding. Looking forward to September!

      I have to admit, I don't mind the look of the two levels with the original textures... Are you going to add the possibility of switching back and forth from the original textures and the new art style à la Halo: Masterchief Collection?

      Thanks so much guys. really appreciate how you've turned this around with regular updates, communication and progress. I hope industry news outlets do updated stories on this, on how with the right drive and people involved, a a campaign can be salvaged.
