November Update

Posted by Nightdive Studios (Creator)
Hi everybody! Before getting into updates, as I mentioned before, we sent out System Shock 1 and 2 keys to folks that backed the qualifying tiers. If you didn’t get your keys, please send us a message.

Project Update

The biggest news is that we’ve officially started Vertical Slice and will have some awesome stuff to show in the coming months. The purpose of VS (vertical slice) is mainly to answer questions. Often times on a game project, devs don’t actually know how long something will take to create. VS is a phase where a slice of the game is created with a few goals in mind:

  • How long will it take to create content?
  • What should the final visuals look like?
  • How should final gameplay feel?

Basically, VS lets us prove out our pipelines and narrow down how the game should and shouldn’t play. By the end of VS, we’ll have a better understanding of what we can achieve with the time/budget we have, and have a more accurate plan moving forward to create a quality game.

Every month, we’ll compile some questions we’ve been seeing in the community and answer them as best as we can here.

Q: Can I upgrade my backer level?

A: Yup, once we have backerkit wired up and deployed.

Q: Will you be adding paypal funding?

A: This should be supported through backerkit.

Q: What will you be releasing System Shock on?

A: Our goal is to launch on PC/Mac/Linux/XboxOne/PS4 by Q2 of 2018. Not sure if it will be a simultaneous launch, but we’ll do our best.

Concept Art

This month we’re showing off an amazing concept piece by our art director, Robb Waters, depicting a section of the medical deck.

Open Positions

As we prepare for entering production, we have a few openings on the team that we’re looking to fill soon. If you, or someone you know, is qualified for any of the positions below, please apply!

  • Lead Animator
  • Environment Concept Artist

Shout Outs

Nightdive Studios has just released a classic on to GOG: Space Rogue - Release date 11/17/2016

Notable for being the first game designed for Origin by Paul Neurath, who went on to found Blue Sky Productions (later renamed Looking Glass Studios).

Trek through an astonishingly realistic universe with outposts and mining stations, planets and asteroids, stars and starships - all in spectacular 3D graphics. Watch combat from cockpit, chase plane, or cinematic camera angles. Engage cunning foes in heated dogfights, where you'll have to outgun and outsmart your opponents to taste victory. Outfit your ship with plasma torpedoes, plasteel armor, particle beams, missiles, force shields, ECM units and more. Execute loops, rolls, and spins. Feel the tug of gravity as you whip around a star. Authentic spaceflight dynamics push your piloting skills to the limit.

Bonus, here is a wonderful image of the 1989 cover:

Hello, sorry to say that I have not received my keys either... Can you please confirm exactly who I should email about this? Thanks!

@thatsnozaku - Great suggestion! Just sent out a backer only update with the info :-)

Can verify that the HB resender is super useful. Got my redemption codes in the desired format and was glad to have found the answer in the comments here. Kudos to @Kristopher Lemberg for the heads-up; I definitely recommend following up via e-mail with a link to the key resender tool in case others were as confused as I initially was!

Thanks @Kristopher Lemberg for finding this great link to get your keys resent!

Please give that a try first, and if you still have issues, send us a message.

    5. DefinitelyNotYakra on

Never mind my previous comment, I was able to use the re-sender to get them

    6. DefinitelyNotYakra on

I never received my keys, and I've been regularly checking my email and messages

    7. Michael Hoffmann on

      @Kristopher Lemberg
Thanks for the advice! I never received an email about the System Shock keys but found them with the Humble key re-sender.

    8. Jordan Joestar on

      I didn't get my key.

    9. Kristopher Lemberg on

You guys may want to re-check the email address you're checking is the same one that was set in your kickstarter account at the time the campaign ended, and that your pledge level did include the classic titles -- so at least the $50 level.
If it matches up, you could try using the Humble key re-sender here:

Good!I know that the game will be released in December 2017,too little time for such a project. But it's for the best

    11. Remco Perlee on

Double post with the regular comments, just to be sure :) I haven't received my keys (yet) either.

Good day! I haven't received my keys for SS1+2, checked my spam and everything already. :(

    14. Jouni Lahtinen on

@Strako I believe the demo was more akin to a proof-of-concept. Vertical slice is something feature-ready with all the game mechanics in place. It's like a feature-rich 'slice' from the full game, thus the name.

I didn't get my keys either, just checked for the email. This is a bit silly...

Wasn't the Steam demo already a Vertical Slice? Sounds like you guys are starting from scratch?! :-/

Do you think it'd be practical to add support for secondary input devices like TrackIR or the Tobii EyeX? It feels like you're making the kind of game that would really benefit from the ability to quickly glance over your shoulder, I know I wanted to do that in the original system shock games. Having a view angle that's independent of your character's body is not only really immersive but would also be valuable if you also plan to support VR headsets on PC or console.

I don't know if anyone else feels the same way but for me the lack of TrackIR support was easily the biggest disappointment about Alien Isolation, its a game screaming out for looking over your shoulder while trying to weld shut a door but no...

      Great update! Excited!

That Space Rogue cover is the bomb!

    27. Keith Fleming on

Can we get a high res version of that concept art?

Just for reference, for those that didn't receive keys for the original Shock games, the mail came from, titled: "Your System Shock Kickstarter Pack order is ready", two weeks ago aprox.

Check your spam folder just in case

Check your spam folders for an email from humble bundle. I didn't think I had it either and just found out it was in my spam folder the last two weeks.

Space Rogue getting a release gets a definite squee from me. I spent countless hours playing it in my youth, particularly the arcade machine that you could play ingame with the bug hunting.

Here's to hoping Tangled Tales might get a release!
