GR8 News! 3D Acceleration on C.H.I.P. and PocketC.H.I.P., and Free PICO-8 For All C.H.I.P.s

C.H.I.P.sters!

First things first! We want to make sure all our backers have received their rewards. If you’ve still not received the reward you pledged for, please confirm your address at track.getchip.com. If you have any issues, email us at ahoyahoy@nextthing.co, and we’ll take care of it!

Now for the GR8 news!

We’ve updated the software for both C.H.I.P. and PocketC.H.I.P. by adding a driver for 3D acceleration! We’ve already seen Pocketeers fragging with Quake III and running Kodi. Updating is simple with our new and improved Chrome web flasher

As an extra bonus for updating, C.H.I.P.s with Hynix flash storage will receive an additional 4GB of space. That’s right! Double the storage. It’s as simple as heading to flash.getchip.com. Update today!

We want to say thank you once again; we’d never be where we are without your support. Seeing your projects and stories on Twitter, Facebook, and the NTC forum is awesome. And don't miss our blog where we highlight some of our favorite content. Keep sharing!

Stay tuned. Much, much more to come.

I ordered chip with the handheld and all the needed cords and adapters on both kickstarter accounts and neither chip set was sent?

Also haven't received anything. No CHIPO, no PocketCHIP, no adapters.

    3. Barbar on

      Not received anything yet :(

I just checked. I got the original chip, but not the pocketChip, VGA adapter or HDMI adapter. Is there any way to get those?

Surprises me that some people haven't received theirs. I've received my initial Kickstarter CHIP last year, then a PocketCHIP a few months ago, and another CHIP just today.

So something is happening with your orders or addresses because their order system does work for me.

OK - NVM - I found the ubuntu-specific instructions and it is flashing now

    7. fmotta on

Oh - I have an old USB hub I am using on my X1 Carbon running Ubuntu

      Thanks!
I have ubuntu64 bit and chrome. When I follow flash instructions the CHIP (from my pocketchip) is detected and the next 30 minutes (maybe more if I let it) I am 'reading details from it...'.
      Any suggestions?

I feel somewhat similarly to @Ted Mieske - I don't really want to install yet another browser, when I've already got 3 installed and taking up space. It seems that if you can write a plug-in for Chrome (which is not very plug-in/extension-friendly), you should be able to write one for Firefox, which is more extension-friendly and flexible. The process of writing an extension for Firefox is pretty well documented, and it would be nice for those of us that don't want/like Chrome to have an alternative. Would you consider coming up with a Firefox extension in the future?

      A. Steinman, they're really close on convergence between the two OSes. The latest 4.4 image for both the CHIP and PocketCHIP that include the Mali driver is very close to achieving this.

I'm intrigued by the details behind the storage "upgrade" - I presume early firmware for some reason was limited to 4GB, and you later found a way around that?

    12. Ted Mieske on

Once again you screwed us! Using Chrome? NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My pocket chip does not work "black screen" after flashing new 3D version 4.4. Works well after reverting to 4.3.

Is there way to use new chippro in pockechip?

The linked page flash.getchip.com says that the flasher requires Chrome/Chromium 49 or later, even in Chromium 53.0.2785.143 on my Xubuntu 14.04.

Has there been any update about consolidating the CHIP/PocketCHIP OSes?

I had backed for the Pocket under the (apparently mistaken) impression that it was intended to be a convenient and portable I/O device for the CHIP, but then discovered upon arrival that to make use of it I had to use the severely limited Pocket-specific software, unable to use the CHIP for general-purpose computing.

I'd love for my original, mistaken understanding to come true.

How can we tell if our CHIP has Hynix flash storage?

@Leslie Owusu-Appiah, sorry I didn't include you in the last response, but would suggest you do the same.

K.A. I got both my rewards on time. I'm sure the issue is with shipping/address. I can assure you they are not a scam. I would suggest you reach out to them ahoyahoy@nextthing.co . The Kickstarter system is notorious as a communication "Bermuda Triangle". Direct is the way to go.

Still nothing. We have confirmed our address, we were early funders and these people can't even bother to respond to our emails. Do you ever actually plan to ship these to us or is this a scam?

    21. Leslie Owusu-Appiah on

I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post, but I (sadly) never received my PocketCHIP. I know startups (especially in hardware) are hard, but even my emails were ignored.
If needed, I'm even happy to pay more (check my pledge, it was in the interest of education/schools).
Great work on $9 GPU magic BTW.
