New Version of the C.H.I.P. Operating System - Great for DIPs!

Posted by Next Thing Co. (Creator)

C.H.I.P.sters and Pocketeers!

Alex and the rest of the software team have released the first major software update to C.H.I.P.! The most important addition is support for HDMI and VGA DIPs.

If you pledged for HDMI and VGA DIPs, you’ll need to update your C.H.I.P. for them to work together. Luckily, Howie and Tina built the C.H.I.P. flasher, which works directly from the Chrome web browser. It takes less than 10 minutes.

To get your C.H.I.P. ready for the DIPs, head to and click GUI 4.4.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A C.H.I.P. that supports DIPs does not support PocketC.H.I.P. and vice versa. C.H.I.P.s can be reflashed to work with either, just not both at the same time. Alex and the software team are working to make everything work nicely together so that future releases will be compatible with DIPs and PocketC.H.I.P. at the same time.

Those curious can head to the NTC forums to check out Crunch’s release notes.

We’ve renovated our docs page to house new additions to the C.H.I.P. docs family: PocketC.H.I.P. and DIPs! If you want to learn more about our products, head to!

If you’ve confirmed your address, we’re shipping your rewards as fast as we can. If you haven’t confirmed your address, what are you waiting for?! Head to and we’ll get your reward shipment in the queue.

PLEASE NOTE: We are only confirming and shipping Kickstarter rewards right now. If you are also a pre-order customer, those confirmations and shipments will begin in the latter half of June.

All shipments outside of the United States may be subject to additional duties and taxes. These are based on the value of the items in your pledge. Each country has a different cutoff amount. For more information, check your national government’s customs policies.

We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing, but we won’t be posting everything here. For new information, projects, and general fun times, check out the NTC Blog.

Learn about what the community has brewing, check out our C.H.I.P. projects, go behind the scenes, and check out what’s inspiring us. There are always new posts!

If you need to contact us, email, rather than using Kickstarter as a third party.

There is an issue with the integration between ZenDesk, our customer service platform, and Kickstarter messages. We read and respond to every Kickstarter message, but have found that our responses through ZenDesk get lost instead of getting back to you. We are working to resolve the issue moving forward.

Again, for questions and support, email

I got mine yesterday (finally!) and like it very much!
The very best thing that made me love CHIP is that you get a tty on the USB Port that powers the CHIP. Plug it in, start putty/minicom/whatever and you have a shell on a serial port like COM3 (windows) or /dev/ttyUSB0 (linux). That rocks, especially if you are an experienced embedded linux guy and want that CHIP thing do funny things like being a BLE beacon-on-steroids headless without any display.

@Creator: The CHIP we are getting will be flashed for use with PocketCHIP, is that right?

The more you describe things the more complicated things sound. If you get a Raspberry Pi Zero with their card, it works when you plug everything in. I hope that the CHIP is just as quick to get started. I'd hate it if it took this long to get something I put in my desk.

Am I really going get this thing?
If I do I will need to update it?
Is my purchase obsolete before I get it?

Next Thing doesn't get to make up their own rules. The reason they and other projects mention this is because people get up in arms about it like it's the project's fault. Take it up with your elected officials if yours isn't a country that allows reward exemptions. It's up to the country's import regulations, full stop. And every single country has different rules and laws and some of them don't provide a distinction between a reward and a purchase. And most of them don't take kindly to people trying to get around their regulations. For instance, Kenya doesn't care what you want to call it, you're paying full import duties and that's that. Here's an example for a similar category:

I would like some elaboration on the "DUTIES & TAXES" paragraph as well. Wasn't this supposed to be included in the pledged amount paid for?

@Elliander - Updating C.H.I.P. does not require a monitor. You do need a computer/laptop, a USB micro cable, a paperclip (or jumper wire), and access to the internet. Check out for the full details.

Once you update C.H.I.P. you will NOT have to repeatedly update it every time you want to connect a different DIP to that C.H.I.P.. On an updated C.H.I.P., you'll absolutely be able to switch between the VGA DIP and HDMI DIP without reflashing.

Currently, the C.H.I.P. image and PocketC.H.I.P. image are not compatible. You will not be able to take a C.H.I.P. running a C.H.I.P. image and use it in PocketC.H.I.P. without flashing it. We are working on a solution to create a universal image, but it is not ready quite yet.

wait so the pocketchip will not come with xfce4 installed, it's coming with this custom launcher? i can still install and use xfce4 on it, right?

I'm confused now. I have multiple CHIPs sitting on a desk, never used, because I don't have any screen that works with those 3 color cables. I have been waiting for the adapters to be able to use them, but I can't use them with the adapters unless I use them without? and if I don't have something to use them with I can't use them at all? That's pretty messed up. And the whole advantage of getting the mobile adapter, for me, was being able to plug it in and take it on the go without lost work. But now I hear that I would have to flash it each time I switch the device it is plugged into?

So, for example, when I take it to college and want to plug it into the monitor via VGA (which likely would require an additional adapter to plug the VGA into since most new monitors don't even have VGA) I will have to flash it in the pocket pledge, then plug it into the monitor, and then after class I have to flash it again and then plug it back in? and I am guessing that the flashing requires a reboot so that would reduce the portability of that plan right there.

Why can't you have a single drive to support all input types? or some dynamic detection/switcher? At the very least, why can't I use the portable adapter with HDMI/VGA without flashing between them constantly?

@Leonard - you'll need to update C.H.I.P. for the adapters to work.

Will backers who pledged for a C.H.I.P. + VGA Adapter or C.H.I.P. + HDMI Adapter combo be required to update the C.H.I.P. for them to work together, or is the already C.H.I.P. pre-flashed with GUI 4.4?

      > DUTIES & TAXES

Come on! You actually write full value on the parcels as if it was a purchase? You're the first project I backed who does that. =/

We are investors and you're sending rewards. We don't need to pay taxes.
