 C.H.I.P.sters!!!

With shipping slated to begin later this month (see SHIPPING UPDATES below for more info), PocketC.H.I.P. backers have yet another reason to be excited: A free full version of the PICO-8 fantasy console will ship preinstalled on every PocketC.H.I.P., adding fully-fledged game-changing game console to its list of abilities!!!

Check out the announcement video starring Tina, NTC’s preeminent gamer and engineer. (She was the #1 ranked Shadow Priest in World of Warcraft for two weeks.

PICO-8 is a modern interpretation of the 8-bit game consoles of the 1980s.   It includes hundreds of community-made games AND all of the tools to change everything about them: sprites, levels, sound effects, music, and even the source code. Budding game designers can even make their own games, right on PocketC.H.I.P.!

We've been working directly with PICO-8's creator, Joseph White of Lexaloffle Games to create an official version just for PocketC.H.I.P. called PICO-8c.

Miss out on PocketC.H.I.P.? Want to buy one for a friend? Pre-order now on the newly redesigned PocketC.H.I.P. web page!  Even try out select PICO-8 games!1

Learn to Code on PocketC.H.I.P.!!!

PICO-8 is an awesome way to peek behind the game-design curtain and begin your own journey into programming. Because PICO-8 is based on the widely-used Lua programming language, skills learned while changing the games, apply directly to real-world scenarios. Combine that with the awesome step-by-step tutorials from the PICO-8 community and you'll be making your own games in no time!

So get your game ideas ready! We can't wait to see what games the C.H.I.P.ster community can make!

EMAIL > KICKSTARTER MESSAGES

There is an issue with the integration between ZenDesk, our customer service platform, and Kickstarter messages. We read and respond to every Kickstarter message, but have found that our responses through ZenDesk get lost in the ether instead of getting back to you.

We are working to resolve the issue moving forward. The best solution both long and short term is to contact us directly at ahoyahoy@nextthing.co, rather than using Kickstarter as a third party.

Again, for questions and support, email ahoyahoy@nextthing.co.

NEW SHIPPING UPDATES!!!

Mass production is underway for PocketC.H.I.P.s, HDMI adapters, and VGA adapters!  We will be shipping in batches beginning the last week of May.  Some batches may not ship until early June.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  In the next few weeks, we will send you an email to confirm your address. To be sure that each pledge arrives at the correct address, every backer will need to verify/update their information. Your pledge will not be able to ship unless you have verified your information. This is true even if we have already shipped you a C.H.I.P..

Stay tuned and game on!

Yeah! I can't wait to get my Chip, I have been anxiouslying waiting!

    4. mixedsignals on May 16, 2016

Seems odd to pre-install a non-open game system. I mean, it's great that it supports Linux and will run on the CHIP but it's a little strange that in order to get rid of it, I'll have to re-flash?? Why not just make it available for download instead? I shouldn't have to opt out of closed source applications, I should have to opt in.

Either way, eager to get my PocketCHIP in, although since I'm overseas I'm betting I'll be in the June shipments. The agony! :-)

    5. Moshe Zioni on May 7, 2016

Wait, is the pocketCHIP's back-case is clear now?

THIS IS AWESOME!!! I've been on the fence about buying PICO-8 so I'm glad I'll be getting it for free! I think the PocketCHIP is a great way to have the first (sorta) physical release of that fantasy console!

@Randy - it looks like it has its own 4-track 'music editor' which functions in the usual vertical-scrolling tracker sort of fashion. There's a tutorial intro hither:

So awesome!!! Pico-8 sounds rad, what tracker does it use???

    9. Tony Bruno on May 3, 2016

I'm super excited and cannot wait to get my PocketChip. I would love to see some videos of the production process and testing of the PocketChip in the factory, like you did with the CHiP. Also, I have to agree with others regarding the Pico-8. Will it come with the needed data to reflash back to the way it arrives should we want to flash the chip for other uses. Having it pre-installed makes me worried about losing it, and not being able to restore it.

Pico-8 is awesome, and it's great to hear you've got it running on PocketCHIP.
Looking forward to creating fun games on the go.

Instead of a pre-installed 8 bit proprietary game platform, I'd prefer to have the schematics of pocketCHIP available, given that "the mass production is underway". My favourite games are schematics reading, software development, problem solving and solution development.

"Will ship pre-installed" <- Does that mean that when I flash the chip, I can not re-install it again? Or will you supply the necessary firmware so I can reinstall it if necessary? I hate to hear that I need to order another CHIP if I want to use the rest of my goodies...

    14. Sean Wall on May 3, 2016

This...is...completely awesome! Thanks for the excellent news! Please send my PocketCHIP already!

    15. Mike Rios on May 3, 2016

Last question, will there be some way to program games to read/wite out to the C.H.I.P.s GPIO pins ala AppGameKit and the Raspberry Pi? Seems like that would make this partnership REALLY special, and a BIG missed opportunity if that's not the case...

    16. Mike Rios on May 3, 2016

Awesome job NTC... can't please them all, I'm definitely digging the inclusion of Pico-8! Having seen and said all of that I definitely think that V2 of the Pocket needs some sort of speaker (I mean the casing now has room for one, and piezoelectric speakers can't add that much more to total cost/bill of sale)... Either way, I can't wait until the end of May to get my Pocket!

    17. Jarred Schulte on May 3, 2016

Super great and wicked excited. Only problem is this little line here under shipping updates... "Some batches may not ship until early June." This does not thrill me. I'll cross my fingers and hope for the best but I have been waiting quite some time for a chip and in actuality I've been waiting for an HDMI adapter to arrive so mine could ship. I still love you guys but this is vexing. Haha

@Neo: Just flash it. Problem solved.

    19. Michael McCormack on May 3, 2016

will this also come on the pocketchips from backerkit?

Which you can remove, just like all the other software on the CHIP. Just flash it.

I like the CHIP because it's open source, and now you say you'll preinstall some proprietary software. =(

Fantastic!! What a great addition to the PocketC.H.I.P.!!!
