Flash C.H.I.P. from your Web Browser - So Shiny! So Chrome!

Posted by Next Thing Co. (Creator)

Mass production of PocketC.H.I.P.s and adapter boards are kicking off soon and shipping is still on track for May, but this was too exciting not to share! Check out Dave flashing C.H.I.P. from the Chrome web browser (and playing a little on PocketC.H.I.P.)!

C.H.I.P.s come pre-flashed with an operating system because we felt it should be usable out of the box. Installing an operating system can be an arduous process, especially when you're raring to get started. We've definitely felt it ourselves…heck, even our own C.H.I.P. flashing process was arduous...until now!

Howie and Tina took to the challenge of a simple C.H.I.P. flasher and came back with our new C.H.I.P. web flasher for Google Chrome, now available in its Alpha Release. So what's that mean?

You can now replace the operating system on your C.H.I.P. from your computer, directly from the Chrome web browser. Just head to, and follow the on-screen instructions. All you'll need is a C.H.I.P., a micro USB cable, a jumper wire or a paper clip, a computer with the Chrome web browser, and around 7 minutes. Keep in mind, this will replace the ENTIRETY of your C.H.I.P.'s storage. If there's anything you want to keep, back it up before flashing.

The Flasher currently has 3 options: the C.H.I.P. boot repair tool, Debian on C.H.I.P. with GUI by Crunch (our most up-to-date factory flashed image), and Debian on C.H.I.P. without GUI by Crunch.

We're super stoked to release this. It's a vast improvement over our previous flashing process and the most exciting thing is it only gets better from here! Can't wait to show you what else we have in store!

There is an issue with the integration between ZenDesk, our customer service platform, and Kickstarter messages. We read and respond to every Kickstarter message, but have found that our responses through ZenDesk get lost in the ether instead of getting back to you.

We are working to resolve the issue moving forward. The best solution both long and short term is to contact us directly at, rather than using Kickstarter as a third party.

Again, for questions and support, email

PocketC.H.I.P.s, HDMI adapters, and VGA adapters are still on schedule to ship by this May. Mass production is almost underway!!!

For more detailed information on shipping, check out this Kickstarter update. The information is up-to-date.

Stay Tuned!

Yeah... this did not work fo me either... I was able to flash using the previous set of flashing insructions. So all is well here.

Why did you've stolen my $19? Why you don't want to refund it?

I get to the Star Flashing screen. It sits at the "waiting for FEL stage and then it fails.
I did this several times with same result, the flashing do not work
      What can I do???

Update: I get to the Star Flashing screen. It sits at the "waiting for FEL stage and then it fails.
Also, the boot repairs occurred super-fast, less than 30 seconds, so I don't know if they worked or not.

I installed the drivers, restarted, hooked it it up through a powered USB 2.0 port, was successfully able to run the boot repair on one of my two, but when I try to install the new OS, it won't progress pass "Please connect your CHIP before moving on!" screen. The second one gives me the same error when I try to run the boot repair. Both have both lights on when I plug them in. What am I doing wrong? (Dell laptop with OS 10)

Tried on a MacBook Air with Chrom and even here the firmware upload fails at 2%

Similar to the Windows version only the "Boor Repair" seems to be working well. Wonder if this is a similar issue reported before on large files not being transferred correctly in fastboot mode.

If you need serial terminal logs just let me know, willing to share all my logs.

Can not get the "Install the Driver" button to work - missing drivers after 1st attempt to load failing at 1% -> Windows 10 64bit with Chrome Version 49.0.2623.112 m - other users having same issue, maybe you can send us a direct link to the drivers.

Great to hear that mass production of PocketCHIP is happening soon. Does that mean we can expect PocketCHIP production files on Github soon?
