C.H.I.P.sters!

Hope those of you who celebrate it had a wonderful Thanksgiving! We here at NTC certainly enjoyed the time and turkey with our friends and families.  Thanksgiving in the rearview means today is Cyber Monday! Cyber Monday means C.H.I.P. pre-orders are open! Until 12 am PST, you can #GetCHIP for $8 at getchip.com using the promo code GETCHIP!

Want more C.H.I.P.s?! Go for it! You can now pre-order up to 5 C.H.I.P.s at once!

A Fistful of C.H.I.P.s
A Fistful of C.H.I.P.s

C.H.I.P. 1.0 Design + C.H.I.P. Case!

With PVT (Production Verification Testing) done, we are almost ready to kick off production batch 1 of C.H.I.P. 1.0!  Extra thanks to backers like @rickyroberson and  who made some excellent design critiques which helped improve the C.H.I.P.'s final design. ¡Viva Open Hardware! Check out the (very, very close to) final design!

C.H.I.P. 0.91. Very close to mass production.
C.H.I.P. 0.91. Very close to mass production.

Same size. Same components. Same functionality.  We've made a change from the smaller R8m (our Alpha C.H.I.P. processor) to the larger R8, which are functionally identical. Because of sourcing complications and repackaging costs for the R8m, we've chosen to move forward with the R8 to remain on time and on budget.

So the processor is now on the back of the C.H.I.P.?

Sure is. Doing this allowed us to keep both our functionality and our form factor, the latter of which is especially important for PocketC.H.I.P. To protect the processor, every Kickstarter C.H.I.P. will come with a case, absolutely free!

As you can clearly see, the case for C.H.I.P. is clear.

SHIPPING UPDATE! (now with dates!!!)

December C.H.I.P.s are currently scheduled to ship from Shenzhen, China the week of December 21st! Shipping times are estimated to be 7-9 days.

As such, December C.H.I.P. backers should receive an address confirmation email today from BackerKit.

January C.H.I.P.s are still on schedule for January. February C.H.I.P.s in February. March C.H.I.P.s in March. PocketC.H.I.P.s and the HDMI & VGA adapters are still on schedule for May. If you are curious when your Kickstarter reward is scheduled to ship, please check your pledge.

Any additional C.H.I.P. added in BackerKit will ship with your earliest C.H.I.P. Any accessory added in BackerKit will ship in May (with your existing shipment if that applies to you).

Want your C.H.I.P. shipped to you instead of someone who is not you? Submit, update, or verify your shipping address through BackerKit at chip.backerkit.com.

Pre-orders are estimated to ship by June of 2016, beginning after Kickstarter rewards are fulfilled.

You may notice the shipping prices on pre-order C.H.I.P.s vary slightly from where they were during the campaign. While some have adjusted up, the vast majority have adjusted down. This is the result of the tireless effort by Ari, our maven of international shipping logistics. We understand this was a cause for concern for many during the campaign, and we've spent the months since endeavoring to become the world's most affordable computer to your doorstep. Ari (and the rest of the team of course) has found a solution we believe will work, thanks in no small part to your support as an early adopter.

Ari, en vogue.
Ari, en vogue.

We cannot wait to get you your C.H.I.P.s!  Stay tuned!

mmmtc (much, much more to come)

Could someone PLZ answer this: so I bought the 49 dollar reward (just CHIP and PocketCHIP) so does that mean my chip will be coming in december (2015) and my PocketCHIP will be coming in may COULD ANYONE PLZ ANSWER MY QUESTIOn

    4. Tatiana Goretsky on

When will I receive my CHIP? I haven't receive October Chip yet. Now I feel being cheated, because didn't get any info or product.

    5. Evan H. on

Can't believe it -- I'll finally be able to start tinkering with CHIP in just 3 weeks. The anticipation is killing me!

@CHIP: I have 6 dollars left on my backerkit account (due to the discount on the shipping taxes...). Can I use them to pay che shipping taxes buying a VGA adapter on the getchip.com site and can I, possibly, get the VGA adapter within my Chip in december (I am one of the first backers...)???

      Thank you!

I agree with the others, I really don't like dropping down to 1 mounting hole. I foresee lots issues if the final version only has the one hole. I'd rather not have to make an add on board purely as a mounting solution for the chip.

    8. Tony Bruno on

As the R8m has integrated Ram and Flash and the R8 does not, give us more or less future functionality? Does the fact that the R8 required using external flash and ram mean that we will have an easier time in upgrading the memory on the R8?

    9. Ted Mieske on

When will I receive my CHIP?

    10. Elliot B on

I agree with the other commenters here that only having a single mounting hole is completely ridiculous.

    11. Dustin Williams on

@Joe Blow: regarding the bigger CPU (R8) - it is actually IDENTICAL to the CPU on the R8M module. They just decided to cheap out and go bigger.

    12. Dustin Williams on

@Joe Blow; Carlos Rodrigues: here's the thread on their bbs regarding this. I still think it's bullshit. https://bbs.nextthing.co/t/mounting-holes-on-0-91-revision/

      Carlos Rodrigues on

Agreed w/ the sentiments below. I think reducing to one mounting hole should be reconsidered.

    14. Joe Blow on

At least with the larger CPU are you able to provide more GPIO?

    15. Joe Blow on

Please even if you have to delay shipment please add another mounting hole! Even if you have to increase cost $1 you are still much better than the PI zero because the wifi + built in storage

    16. Joe Blow on

To add to the below I would rather see you make pocket chip larger and add those 2 darn mounting holes back. Even if you add 1 tiny hole that fits a ziptie it would be better than nothing this thing is just going to flop around like no ones business if you want to use it for any real projects besides a computer.

    17. Joe Blow on

      I agree with dustin

I'm incredibly angry about the change from three mounting holes to just ONE. That makes it COMPLETELY useless for reliably mounting it to anything.

      You ruined a great product.

Also I am a little curious how much the cost went up from changing from a single sided PCB to a dual sided assembly.

@Simon: The $8 USD preorders (which will become $9 tomorrow, I understand) won't be available until June, which is after your $44 (do you mean $24, or are you not USD, or had to pay shipping for some reason?) pledge is shipped [in May], and doesn't include the HDMI connector, either (which would have to be purchased separately.)

(only a backer, no affiliation with ntc)

      Simon Ambridge on

Advice please. I pledged $44 back in June and for that I get 1 chip and an hdmi connector.
When can I expect to see something? And if you're now selling at $8 what was the benefit of me pledging $44?

    22. Nathan Thompson on

While some people may not like that you can't place chip on flat surfaces without the case, I actually prefer this design. It allows me to mount chip on a chip addon board and still use custom cooling for the processor if I wish. Before the processor heat would be stuck between chip and whatever board it was connected to. Second, having the ability to attach chip to a board AND use the battery connector is a huge plus for me. Sadly, because I got the HDMI package I won't get mine until May :(.

Is there a way for me to add an extra chip to my order -- and ship it with my other items

    25. Manoël Trapier on

      Oh yes, question answered :D
I've received the "Last call to update your shipping address" email :) \o/ \o/ \o/

    26. Manoël Trapier on

@CHIP, so for the December CHIPment, as I'm in the split $93 reward, that mean I'm in the December schedule?

      Great!

    27. Mike Robinson on

      @Ish

I'm only a backer, but after looking at the $5 rPi Zero, it is hardly equal to the CHIP...

There is no built-in storage ... you need to add a MicroSD card ($3 for a 4GB card from EBay)
There is no built-in network adapter ... you need to add a USB dongle for Ethernet / WiFi and a Micro-USB to USB adapter ($5 minimum)
The CPU in the Zero is not optimized for battery consumption like the CPU in the CHIP
The GPIO pins are not connected ... you need to solder on your own header to use it.

My guess is dropping the price by $1 for Black Friday is only being done for marketing.

    28. Manoël Trapier on

@Ish Ot Jr. The $8 is just for the Black Friday, it will get back to $9 after

How will the change in shape affect the mounting into the PocketCHIP when they come out? Or will that be accounted for?

    30. Ish Ot Jr. on

I understand the pressure from the $5 Raspberry Pi Zero etc. but can you comment further on the decision to reduce the unit cost for pre-orders vs. Kickstarter backer price?

Thanks for the cases! What does the other side look like?

    32. William Steele on

Ouch... the mounting hole arrangement leaves a lot to be desired. The Alpha chips had a great arrangement... having 3 holes allowed it to be mounted stable in a chassis and still allow user interaction with the USB port... with this new configuration, users inserting and removing the USB will torque it to one side when inserting or extracting the USB.

Just to check, the Pocket CHIP comes without a CHIP, right? I already have two ordered, and just want the Pocket to go with them.

Also, your site says you don't ship to the UK? Is this a mistake?

What about the preorder chips? Figured it would matter for the people getting the 8 buck ones.
