thank you everyone out there who has shared and liked on facebook, who has responded to my newsletter invitations, who has told a friend, and who has so generously pledged your support! this is a project that has needed you. together we are gonna do this!
with your help, survivor girl ukulele band is making a short cd!! yayyyyyy!!!!
and new pledges are still very welcome. any funds received over and above the goal will go into the project to make it more better.
dear wonderful everyone, thank you thank you thank you for joining the baaaand!!!
let's start with a sample of "twinkle twinkle little star" -- here in a minor key, with lyrics that the girls helped write!
what is survivor girl ukulele band project?
it's a little project in india. survivor girl ukulele band: bringing restoration and hope to survivors of human trafficking through the healing power of music and love.
join the band!!!
this kickstarter campaign is your invitation to be part of the survivor girl ukulele band cd project -- and join the band!!
what's the plan?
we're planning to make a short cd, something in between an ep and an lp.
more specifically, there will be at least four original songs, each with one or two versions on the cd.
for instance, the survivor girl ukulele band song will have one version in english and one version in bengali. and some songs will have a "girls voices only" version as well as a "girls + laurie" version.
the collaborative effort, with the girls helping to write lyrics for three of the songs, will give insight into their lives and their hearts.
(the girls faces are not shown to protect their privacy.)
why is it so important?
these girls have had horrible things happen to them and they have very little education, but they want and deserve to be heard.
and because when you make a cd, you have something that's real. something you can be proud of, and it's a record, and it's part of history, and you can listen to it over and over again, and you can share it, and no one can ever take that away from you.
you can help make it happen!
and in return you, too, will be part of this record and this history.
the girls are playing well and their voices are so sweet, so i'm happy to say that what we have so far sounds great. plus, the girls will be backed up by some of los angeles's top musicians, including steve deutsch, m.b. gordy, and john o'kennedy, so this will be a very high quality product.
you will love hearing them sing and play!! (i'm on the cd too : )
what's also really cool: the survivor girls helped write three of the songs, some of the lyrics are in bengali, but that makes it all the more authentic and unique. and don't worry, the english translation will be available.
where do the funds go?
pledged support will cover budgeted expenses including: studio time, professional session musicians, producer, mixing and mastering, cover sleeve design and printing, pressing the cd, kickstarter fees, mailers and postage, and a nice sharpie pen for signing.
what else is good about this project?
these girls are learning how to learn, learning how to create, learning how to play something over and over and over to make it better and better. these are things those of us who are educated can easily take for granted.
the survivor girls involved in the recording project feel a great sense of empowerment and pride in their achievements, while new students are inspired by the success of the senior girls, they attend ukulele classes with enthusiasm, and they want to learn.
share the love -- with survivor girl ukulele band ukulele friendship bracelets!!
the survivor girls at the shelter home like to make friendship bracelets! and one of rewards for supporting the cd project is a handmade survivor girl ukulele band ukulele friendship bracelet -- made with love to fit your ukulele. (and your friend's ukulele!)
more information about survivor girl ukulele band project
six years ago i landed in mumbai india with a bunch of ukuleles, found a shelter home in which to teach, and started teaching survivor girls -- girls who have been rescued from forced prostitution and other vulnerable situations -- how to play the ukulele!!
the last three six-month stints i've been in kolkata, and the girls have already performed more than ten times in kolkata!
Risks and challenges
i believe the timeframe is realistic, and i've got great people lined up to help me do what needs to be done, so we should be good with the november delivery dates.
if for some reason the date needs to be pushed out, i will let you know well in advance.
i will also let you know about achievements and milestones along the way.
and thank you thank you thank you for joining the band!!!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
