Deus Ex Machina: A Superheroic Sequel
Outlaw superhero Spitball takes on a new undercover mission, James Bond-style. The sequel to the spandex-and-zombie hit, HUNGRY GODS.
In Hungry Gods, rookie superhero Spitball was invited up to the major leagues in a covert mission to contain the zombie apocalypse. Now, six months later, he's an outlaw superhero, adored by the public but wanted by the law. And he's loving every minute of it!
In this newest novel, Deus Ex Machina, Spitball and his mentor, the Miracle Worker, infiltrate an international supervillain convention in search of dead friends and world-shattering secrets. DXM has everything you loved (or will love) from HG: super-powered spandex adventure, realistic struggles in a fantastic world, and plenty of sarcasm, growing pains, and laugh out loud fun! There's also a bit of young romance, some James Bond-style espionage, high-tech threats, and rampaging monsters!
What rewards are you offering?
Books, my friends, books! (I am a writer, after all.)
It's been about four years since the Kickstarter that successfully launched Hungry Gods, but I have not been sitting idle. The Identity Crisis Universe has been steadily growing, as have my other realms of fantasy and science fiction.
The reward options to the right describe SIDEKICK and MAJOR HERO books. Choose between these ebooks as per your reward level.
(Note that the "Hungry Gods 2" cover refers to DXM, which obviously doesn't have a cover yet...)
Please note that while ebooks can be sent via radioactive brainwaves, I can only ship physical books to United States and Canadian postal addresses--and Canada's going to cost a little extra. I know that sucks. But you know what else sucks? International shipping rates! You'd be paying more in stamps than you would for the books in the first place! So please accept my apologies for that harsh reality.
Writing a novel is hard, but no one can really help me with that part. Shaping and packaging it into the best final product possible, however, that I can get help with. And high-quality, professional help costs money, as it should. Plus, inviting generous strangers to throw in their faith and enthusiasm (and a few bucks, while they're at it) is a great way to make this our book, rather than just my book.
The two most basic needs for this project are a good copy edit and fantastic cover art. There are always more things to pour resources into--hiring voice talent for the audiobook, marketing, possibly foreign language translations, etc--but if we can start with the editing and art, we'll have our bases covered.
What's the plan?
At the time of this writing, I have 60,000 words and 23 chapters done. I estimate this to be 70-80% of the journey. I plan to have the finished first draft done by June 30th. This leaves plenty of time for editing, revision, and cover art to meet the projected October delivery schedule.
Some of the non-DXM rewards, like ebooks already written and out there, I can start filtering out to you before October.
What if we build this sucker up beyond 750 bucks?
Stretch rewards? If you all can surprise me with over and above what we need to get started, I can offer a few more treats...
$1500 - I have another book, Green-Eyed Monster, a collection of seven sci-fi and fantasy stories, scheduled to be published the end of the year too. If we double our goal, everyone at the Sidekick Duo level ($5) and up will also get that as a bonus ebook!
$3,000 - Let's crack open some more universes! Add the Endless Dark science fiction ebooks to the package, The Thorne Legacy and The Scythe of Kronos, as well as my book of 80's noir mysticism, One-Eyed Jacks. So at this point, everyone who pitched in $5 or more (Sidekick Duo) will get their reward, plus four more ebooks in total!
$6,000 - How about some merch? Hitting this level will unlock options for additional purchase of merchandise at a small extra cost. What should we make? Mouse pads, T-shirts, a deck of cards? As we approach this level, we'll start exploring the possibilities together!
$12,000 - Wow, do you think this is even possible? Maybe another level of merch? If we hit this, we'll figure something out!
This all sounds kinda cool, except for the thumb twiddling I see coming. Is there anything else I can do while waiting for my books?
Yes, thanks for asking!
If you know anyone else who might be interested in comics, superheroes, science fiction, fantasy, reads a lot, or just needs an entertaining escape from the dreary reality that is our modern world, please spread the word. The more folks we get involved, the more successful our project will be! (You could also check out some more of my non-superhero books, if you really wanted to…)
Risks and challenges
I'm a proven writer with several books under my belt. Still, delays are possible, I suppose.
I have recently discharged from 13 years of Naval service and my family and I are still transitioning from Navy life in Japan to civilian life in Ohio. Most of these seismic waves have passed, but we're still feeling some tremors here and there. Real life can still knock us off our feet when we least expect it.
But I'm good at climbing back up again.
It's also possible the services hired with the funds you help provide could be delayed on their ends. With good professionals to help us, though, this is low-threat.
I have estimated October of 2018 for completion and publication, which should give us a little wiggle room. With luck, everything might be ready before then.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
