What is Die Homer?
"The mini comic equivalent of a punk cover version, Tyler Hutchison's Die Homer Vol I is a balls-to-the-wall tribute to a cult classic, in equal parts homage and parody, and 40 stories high, with suspense, excitement and adventure in every panel. "
"A wittily constructed pastiche."
"... we're already eagerly awaiting Die Homer's return in the second volume"
I started making Die Homer as a gift for my dad. I originally wanted to make something fun and lighthearted for him as a Christmas gift. My dad LOVES Die Hard, so I wanted to make him something related to the film. I had not seen Die Hard in a very long time, but as I re-watched it I realized Die Hard is one the BEST ACTION MOVIES EVER MADE. Seriously, it's amazing. The framing and pacing is perfect. I started deconstructing the film and attempted to translate these scenes into my comics. Several months later I had Die Homer.
You can read the first half of Die Homer for free at diehomer.com. I will continue posting weekly pages until the rest of the story is posted.
Here are the first few pages for your enjoyment:
WHY CAN'T YOU JUST SELL ME A COPY?
I would love too, but for legal reasons, I'd prefer to give it away. In the sample pages above, you'll notice that I parody several different famous cartoon characters, Disney characters included, and even though I am within my legal rights to publish a parody under fair use laws, I can't really afford any potential litigation. Yes, places like Mad Magazine have been publishing movie parodies for years, but they have clout and lawyers and know how to deal with selling works that are parody. I don't, so instead I am asking for money to buy a high-quality printer that I will use to print Die Homer to give away as a thank you gift for funding this Kickstarter.
WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
The majority of the money will go to buying a Risograph Duplicator. I initially just wanted to raise money to print copies of this book so I could share it with the indie comics community. I got several price quotes for printing Die Homer (Offset printing and Risograph) and realized that for the same price of paying someone to print these books I could buy a professional printer and make it myself!
- Cost of a used Risograph -$2000-$2500
- Shipping Risograph $175
- Paper - $300
- Ink and Masters - $400
- My blood, sweat and tears - FREE
- Kickstarter + Processing - about 9% of your total
I could get up and running for about $3,000. Since Kickstarter + Processings fees takes a cut of about 9% I am asking for $3,333 (Also this just seems like a good number.)
The cost of shipping and packaging are have been properly calculated and are listed with each reward.

Maybe you would like to see a comics parody of Ghostbusters, or Jurassic Park, or Top Gun. Did you say Blade Runner?? Heck yes, I love Blade Runner. Seriously, you can pick any movie. Steel Magnoilas, Magic Pizza, Pretty Woman - I'll do it! Heck I will even let you pick some cartoon characters that you would like to see included (Though I still reserve the right to make final judgement on casting. Who plays what role is an important part in the humor of my work.)

Risks and challenges
ISN'T THIS ILLEGAL DUE TO COPYRIGHT OR SOMETHING?
Technically NO. This comic is parody/satire which falls under fair use laws in the United States. The content in this comic is considerably transformed from the original works. This project is not endorsed by, nor affiliated with, the original copyright holders and does not represent itself as an official publication of any kind.
FINDING A PRINTER
A brand new Risograph is really expensive. Way too expensive for me to buy with the funds from this kickstarter. That is why I am purchasing a refurbished machine. I have been talking with the lovely people at ACM Copiers and they have a wide variety of refurbished Risographs and great customer support.
Printing books can always be a nightmare. Especially when working with a more complex printer like a Risograph. I am an extremely technical person and currently work as a Software Engineer. I am really good at solving technical problems. I have left myself plenty of time on my schedule to do a full run of these books.
This has been the bane of many a successful kickstarter. I have heard the horror stories. The amazingly awesome Frank Gibson from Tiny Kitten Teeth (who has run multiple successful kickstarters) has helped me weigh and calculate packaging/shipping costs for all of my rewards!
