Suri alpacas are raised on family farms across the United States. They are shorn each spring to harvest their incredibly soft fiber. The locks of fiber on these animals transform into light, thermal, hypoallergenic, beautiful silky soft products.
The unique characteristics of Suri that make these products so wonderful, also present unique challenges during various processing stages. If any of the steps of the process are done incorrectly, it leads to a lower quality product and a high amount of waste.
The Suri Network wants to ensure that producers get the most out of their annual fleece harvest.
The Suri Network is a non-profit organization focused on promoting the Suri alpaca and educating Suri alpaca farmers. We offer education to empower farmers to get the most from their harvest. We’ve achieved major milestones so far, including authoring a breed standard and implementing a herd classification system to ensure our animals continue to represent the highest quality.
Our project is to create a professionally produced, four-hour educational DVD that will cover all aspects of transforming this incredible fiber into amazing finished products.
The video above was made by one of the Suri Network’s Product Development Committee members and leader of this DVD project, Alvina Maynard. The Suri Network thanks Alvina and her daughter, Aidyn, for introducing this project. She wanted to make sure we let you know that this video was made by her, using her phone, and NOT by our professional videographer. While we think she did a good job for an amateur, expect a dramatic increase in quality in the finished product.
By pledging the purchase price of $63 for members and $78 for non-members, you are purchasing a copy of the DVD. When the project is funded, we'll get your shipping address & have a copy mailed to you shortly after project completion. You will not have to pay any additional funds. Also, please note that if you pledge to attend the seminar, that does not include a copy of the DVD. In order to receive the DVD as well, you must pledge $163.
PLEASE NOTE:After this Kickstarter pledge window closes in 40 days, the purchase price will increase by $10. The early bird discount is our way of saying an extra "Thank You!!!" for making this project possible.

Risks and challenges
Our partners for creating this project are not co-located. Therefore, there is a risk that outside influences affect travel to the film location. Thankfully, our videographer is local, so filming can be rescheduled if necessary.
We have an appropriate indoor facility for inclement weather filming.
There is a risk of something happening to one of our participants where they can no longer participate. We do have qualified backup participants; however this could cause a significant delay in production. Not a show stopper; we'll still be able to get the product out before the 2014 shearing season.
Our alpacas don't always follow our script, so we've allocated extra hours for filming. Our shearer is also a consultant for animals in film production and all partners in the project are experienced in handling alpacas.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
