Cosmic Star Heroine - Battle Screenshot WIP 2.0!

We've been tweaking the battle UI since the last screenshot based on various feedback you all gave us and thought we'd share the results.

We shrank the portraits a bit so that they wouldn't draw as much attention away from the action and then we swapped their position so that we could add another character slot to the time bar. We redesigned the name/description bar so that we'd have more space for text. Finally, we made the numbers in combat slightly smaller (we think it looks better this way).

As usual, this is a work-in-progress and so the layout and art is subject to change between now and the game's release.

V3 is better, having my guys on one side and the enemy on the other cuts down on confusion.

      I like the changes :)

The smaller numbers makes it easier to read them all fast (even though the battles are turn based).
I also like the how the skill name is framed, it really stands out (which helps in quickly reading the skill).
The extra description space will be useful (even if you do explain it in more detail in the menu).
I assume the blue selection "cursors/fields" are animated, and should stand out well enough.
Noticed how you adjusted the layout to cluter as little of the screen as possible, it's appreciated ;)

I love this aspect of videogames where things change a lot before settling on that "final form".
Also love how this game is taking shape :)
I'm eagerly waiting for the next update!

The image didn't display properly in the email, just fyi. Looks amazing btw.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Maybe we'll have a version 3.0 to post in the comments before long. :)

My only concern is the action window looks really small and doesn't communicate it's importance. I missed it the first time I looked at the screen with all the other windows and meters.

      Looks great guys!

@Steven Lord and Imaria as long as they do not make it red/green due to color blindness this would not be an effective way to distinguish enemies from allies.

    11. Imaria on

I agree with Steven Lord; some sort of red/blue distinguishing enemies from good guys in the Time Bar, maybe even just red/blue borders?

Related to that, the "currently selected" skill border is also pretty small and hard to see. Making that a bit clearer could help. Although... I can't tell if it's supposed to be animated (it looks like the "selected" border around that and Alyssa is perhaps supposed to have moving scanlines?) which would make it stand out more as is.

Why are you fighting the Ninja Turtles? xD

Far better than before :) !!! Awesome !

Are the pictures in the Turn bar always going to be distinguishable, even on the smaller Vita screen and with all the characters and enemies? Maybe turn the blue bar running to the right of the pictures red next to portraits of enemies. That way even if it's hard to tell WHICH enemy is coming up, you can at least be certain that it's an enemy not an ally coming up.

Very Chrono Trigger - esque. Loving it.

Changes are an improvement. Perhaps think about making the numbers and bars smaller and putting one above the portrait and one below.

That looks a lot better! Well done on it. I am concerned about the menu system for the Skill/Item/Prog. Perhaps you could tell us how it works?

Yes, CSH is turn-based and yes, you'll be able to use shoulder buttons to quickly switch tabs.

    19. Jeff Szudzik on

Like the changes. I would also prefer to take my time entering commands rather than lament a fumbled input which might turn the tide of an otherwise winnable battle.

I like how the portraits are on the same side as the Action Box, and how there's more space for skill descriptions.

I'm not 100% sure if I like the tabbed interface. Is CSH turn based? That is, can I take as long as I want to enter commands or do I have to be fast? If I can take my time, then that's okay. I think I definitely prefer the tabbed interface over e.g. a radial interface around the character, also because I guess I can use shoulder buttons to switch tabs?
