66% there! Vote for a new character!

Hi everyone! Day 3 and we're already more than halfway to $100,000! Thank you so much!

It was brought to our attention in the comments that the playable cast could use more non-human characters and we couldn't agree more. Therefore sometime after the kickstarter has concluded, we'll present a few different possibilities for a new non-human playable character and give all of our backers the chance to vote on which one they like the best. The character with the most votes will be added to the game as a fully playable character in your party!

Of course, we're welcome to suggestions on who this non-human character should be, so if you have a cool idea that you'd like us to use, feel free to let us know in the comments! :)

What about some kind of somewhat anthropomorphic space octopus? It could have an ink attack to blind, and maybe extra attacks if it's unarmed or equipped with a fist weapon. Oh, and it could also have a camoflage effect to increase dodge chance.

I think an otter would be cool :D

    3. Creator Sean Kelly on November 13, 2013

Something like a Pierson's Puppeteer would be fun. Anything with two heads and three legs gets my vote.

A hive mind nanotech being would be great!

They'd have many abilities because they're smarter when they're all there. But, as the take damage in a fight, their abilities decrease because they're dumber with less pieces.

This'd make you wanna keep that character fully healed to make use of it's better abilities!

A digitized alien intellect, uploaded into a brain body.

Not only can you do "meatbag" jokes but now you can throw in the stuffy superiority of a smug alien as well!

i think we can all agree that it should be a robotic T-rex complexed by the fact that he can't do push-up.

I've got an idea! How about an anthropomorphic frog!? =P

    8. Creator Joni William Ahonen on November 12, 2013

I agree with the people who want a non-bipedal character. It's something we don't see every day in fiction or games. Multi-limbed is also neat if it's possible.
I also like the suggestion for a Plant, Squidlike or Robot (my favourite) characters. The suggestions for more "out there" like sentient Gas-entities are aslo something to consider.

An Undead, someone like Brahms (Valkyrie Profile), XD

In my opinion, I would really like to see a character that has more than 2 legs... Or not humanoid in nature, as in doesn't walk like a human or resemble us. For instance, most of the enemies on the TV series of Star Trek are modeled based upon a human body. The Borg, Ferengi, Romulans, Klingons, Cardassians are all humanoid in nature. In most games, shows and movies it is mostly what we see!

Here's hoping to some 8-legged or water-based or stardust-based.... thing!

On second thought, a Chimera character of some kind would be great! It could have multiple personalities because, you know, it IS many different things! That could make for some funny dialogue :) And even some interesting backstory, like how does a Chimera even come into existence?

While the more weird and wonderful alien types would be nice I don't think animating such things is really that easy or reasonable in the timeframe that the project is on, humanoid characters are so overdone because they are sadly easier to make

So while a sentient mold, tree or other sounds really cool I understand if we end up with a generic (insert descriptor) - people race character and I am sure whichever does get done Zeboyd will do a good job of it

    12. Creator Sean Reddy on November 12, 2013

      1) I would vastly prefer a genderless/gender neutral character. There's no need to have a "hawt" female. (Looks like the game already has several who might qualify anyway.) And, please, no catgirls. Overdone as previously mentioned.

      2) Something distinctly non-bipedal would be neat, though I realize that the animator might have more difficulty with such a character.

      3) I lean towards the following:
      a) Sentient plant/tree, possibly with tentacles
      b) Robot, non-humanoid/non-bipedal, possibly with tentacles
      c) Robotic vehicle controlled by a sentient octopus-like alien in its own biosphere. Ironically enough, probably best without tentacles; I'm not sure whether this should be a tracked vehicle, an animalistic vehicle with multiple (4-6) limb, or a repulsor field or a/g vehicle manipulating things with tractor/pressor beams.

      An ant.
Or maybe a swarm of bees? Cybernetic bees. The hive is a computer of some sort.

Bob from Monsters Vs Aliens and or a Shark with Laser Beams (Austin POWERS...YEAH Baby!)

    15. Creator Jason Frei on November 11, 2013

Throw in a reference to a previous game and have the new character as the love child of Cthulhu and Umi. Maybe named "Cthumi" or something. You have no weird/alien female characters yet, so a blue haired, tentacle mouthed girl with a heart of gold and a streak of evil corruption running through her seems like just the thing.

    16. Creator Andrew Rodda on November 11, 2013

I vote for a shape shifting slime

    17. Creator Elton Borges Mesquita on November 11, 2013

I've imagined a life form that would look like a fungi. It would be intelligent, but it need a host to move and to try to reproduce. It would ending up in the body of a female biologist that had some cybernetic implants in order to help her with her field work. The fungi thing transformed her, they can't get separated, but they share the same body, since the cybernetic implants didn't allowed the invader to take over. The host don't need to be humanoid, And the two would share the world with their own views. It would be one of those characters that start weak but gets really stronger over time. And she would use her tool, combined with the invader power to synthesize all sorts of organic compounds.
      Alien Biochemistry FTW!

I vote for Mark Garcia's Peace Bot, it would take some work to get it balanced right but it leaves room for growth and story and makes for a unique character.

      An amoeba!!! HAhahah!!

    20. Creator Zakharov Sawyer on November 11, 2013

I think an interesting character would be one of those typical Grey aliens, you know the sort: Big head, black eyes... think Sectoids from X-Com or Paul. Only difference is that our little guy would have lost access to his psionic powers for some reason. Genetic defect, experimental virus, who knows. Distraught with the loss if his powers, he's had to develop in other areas to make up for it. He would probably have a shy and aloof attitude, since unlike the rest of his species he would have no telepathy. No telekinesis means he'd have to actually get his hands dirty - extremely rare for his species.

Perhaps through the story he'd find that it's not the abilities that make the man, but vice-versa. *shrug*

A Peace Bot named "Otium". These robots, which specialize in healing and shield based magic, were originally created as a means of promoting peace among the masses in times of unrest. Rather than being equipped with weaponry, these machines were programmed with the unyielding idea that peace is the only solution. As a result, they commonly insert themselves in the middle of conflicts, but never resort to violence to solve it. While he constantly insists on protecting the party members and encouraging them to avoid violence, perhaps an event at a later stage in the story causes Otium to realize that in some instance peace can only truly be attained after conflict. With the robotic catharsis weighing on his mind, it would be fun to see him embark on some kind of self-seeking journey where he transforms from a peace bot to a robot that mounts weaponry and accepts that he must fight in some instances.

    26. Creator BH on November 11, 2013

There are some neat ideas in here. I agree that cat-girls are kinda generic though.

I just think it'd be great to see an alien/robot female that doesn't "look" female, i.e. no obvious feminine human features (breasts/hips/etc.). Think of like, Azala from CT, Crasher/Small Foot from Gobots, or the Sandras from Valkyrie. I think too often RPG's are willing to explore crazy designs for the male cast, but stay fairly conservative when it comes to the ladies.

Some kind of plant creature, whether it's a reference to Groot (Marvel), the Sylvari (Guild Wars), or Killoren (DnD 3.5).

To hit on multiple things that I don't see yet in the game: A sentient, quadruped, plant creature with some mimicry or transformation.

    34. Creator JediaKyrol on October 29, 2013

One of my favorite characters of all time was Nelsha from Thousand Arms...she had a collection of cursed cosplay outfits that changed her personality (and stats and combat specials) when she wore them. A character like that would likely offer lots of fun dialogue as well...and bonus comedy male or even completely non-human (like an energy being that just makes the dresses float around.)

    35. Creator Man-is-Obsolete on October 7, 2013

What about a character from an alien race that has two heads sharing one body? Thus this character would in effect be two unique character personalities and open up some potentially interesting combat mechanics. Perhaps one mind is in control of the physical aspects of the body and the other is able to control things with his/her mind or perform magic. Special attacks could combine the two. It could be more subtle than one is the muscle and the other is the brains, but you get my point.

I suggest putting a character in that's a quadruped. It might be an interesting change of pace for the animator.

    43. Creator Taylor Prahar-Ryals on October 4, 2013

I just looked through all the characters you revealed and realized something. You don't have any zombie characters. How about sci-fi version of Erik? Or, you could return to Captain Philemon K. Burt.

An elder god, of course! They came from the stars, didn't they?

    45. Creator Shevek on October 4, 2013

      A few words of caution:

I hope this character is not something silly. I am tired of jRPGs with silly characters. The best RPGs have characters that mirror our own real world relationships. If its a dinosaur, or an AI, or an android, or a dog, or whatever - make it REAL. Give the character real motivations and more characterization than a canned list of stereotypes or lame one-liners.

Also, don't make a character just because it "seems cool." Please make sure it makes sense in the setting. JRPGs are notorious for following strange anime tropes whereby characters are put in "just because" with little to no tie in to the lore of the setting itself.

    46. Creator Taylor Prahar-Ryals on October 4, 2013

Nigire-chu from Fish Force would be cool. Although, I would love to see the return of Paws.

I like Jamie's sentient potato idea. The dark side of Monsanto's unrestrained experiments escapes from the underground facility...
