CHICAGOLAND is an exhibition of design work, created and executed in the Chicago area, by local designers and manufacturers. CHICAGOLAND will be on view in New York City during New York Design Week - the largest design market in the US. By showing our work during Design Week we will connect with design enthusiasts, collectors, retailers and other manufacturers and designers from across the country. Our goal is to engage this community for press exposure, product licenses and other exhibition opportunities, as well as drive sales and bring business back to the Midwest.

Living in Chicago has many advantages for designers, access to transportation, lots of space for larger scale work and direct access to Chicago’s rich manufacturing industry. By forming relationships with manufacturers and local artisans we are able to tap into their extensive experience in materials and fabrication techniques. This combination of design vision and technical know-how results in stronger conceptual ideas and higher quality products.

But creating design work is only half the battle. Bringing that product to market is the other half. And this is where we need your help. This spring CHICAGOLAND will exhibit furniture, textiles, lighting and other objects at WantedDesign, a venue in Chelsea. This will be the second year partnering with WantedDesign to show the global design community what is happening in Chicago. Last year over 9,000 people visited our exhibition - they saw, bought, talked and wrote about work that was designed and made in Chicago, by Chicago designers and manufacturers.

Exhibiting work in New York is expensive. By supporting Chicagoland you will help pay for the venue rental, event insurance, shipping costs, building materials for the exhibition display, and printing costs for the takeaway – all of which come to nearly $10,000. Designers are responsible for any costs associated with prototyping and manufacturing as well as their own travel and accommodation while in New York, which means every dollar you give goes directly to exhibition expenses.

To view work by each designer in the exhibition visit our bio page for individual websites. Each of the rewards below was created by a CHICAGOLAND designer. Back this project, help show Chicago design work in New York, and collect cool stuff made by Chicago-area designers.

Risks and challenges

As we mentioned, exhibiting design work during New York Design Week is expensive - but vital to our practices. Each piece that will be shown in New York is near completion, the venue is secured, our takeaway with designer bios and design information is almost ready - the exhibition is nearly complete! Our main challenge now is raise the funds. If we fail to make our Kickstarter goal the financial burden falls directly on each designer. For some this is an impossible challenge - CHICAGOLAND is at its best when representing as many independent designers as possible, we don't want to lose out on showing great design work because of financial constrains.
