About this project
You helped me to fly by the first stretch goal - thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone that has contributed so far!
The first stretch goal was for Latifah Saafir Studios products so the second stretch goal will be devoted solely to Quilt Cadets! It will be for an additional $5,200 for a total of $20,631. $2,500 will go towards building the ultimate kid safe Quilt Cadets website with a focus on building community including features such as Pinterest like photo sharing! In addition to this, the remaining $2,700 will go towards printing the next three in a series of 12 patterns that will make up the 2016 Quilt Cadets pattern of the month club. This will take the pattern club to June. I estimated pattern costs at $900 each which is on the high side because Quilt Cadets patterns have a tendency to be a little more expensive due to increased number of pages and the inclusion of paper templates and/or CD's in most patterns.
I've updated the rewards a bit to reflect requests. First, there is a 3 The Clammy ruler pack that will include all the The Clammy rulers since the 6" and 8" were added with the last stretch goal! (Thanks again!) Also, I've included two options for all my shop owners out there. Thanks for requesting! Added two more pillows - I wont add any more after this. And a "Name A Quilt After You" reward!
Thank you so much for helping me reach my funding goal. I can't believe it happened in just over 36 hours!
With this stretch goal we will add two additional rulers, The Clammy 6" and The Clammy 8". I will also produce the first Latifah Saafir Studios pattern book that will feature The Clammy rulers!
I have updated some of the rewards as you've requested. I added two additional Guild Packs. They've been going fast and I'll likely not add any more so if you're interested take advantage. I also added The Clammy 12" ruler in a reward by itself. I also added shipping to the European Union as well as to Australia and Canada
This Kickstarter campaign will allow me to expand my reach as a quilt teacher and designer and produce a total of 9 products including 7 patterns, 1 instructional booklet and a ruler.
I've been sewing my whole life. In 2009 I found quilting, became inspired and dove in head first. I followed patterns for my first two quilts so I could figure out all the quilt specific skills like basting and binding. After that, much of the joy of quilting has been in designing. I've been teaching my quilting designs and techniques for about four years now.
Locally in Los Angeles, you'll find me on the schedule at Sew Modern, a fab modern quilt shop on the Westside. And over the last two years I've enjoyed traveling across the country teaching and lecturing at guilds, shops and at quilt shows.
Let me say, second only to designing quilts, I LOVE to teach. But, I can only teach so many people personally. So in order to be able to share what I do with more people I decided to start writing patterns. I'm ready to share them with the world!
The 'One Stitch' philosophy was born out of the innocence of youth. As a child I had the attitude that there was nothing too difficult to sew as long as I took it 'one stitch at a time'. I not only carry this philosophy into my own work but I also try to impart this concept to my students.
In addition to making me fearless, this attitude, my engineering background, and the fact that I'm a bit of a lazy *ahem* I mean efficient quilter also helps me to think about ways to simplify quilting. I'm always coming up with techniques and dreaming of new quilt tools.
Latifah Saafir Studios is the flagship brand of the company and will include patterns and products that reflect my personal and unique design style.
Of the many patterns in development, four patterns were selected to be released in this initial launch and funded through this Kickstarter campaign.
I'm so excited about this! I would like to introduce to you The Clammy 12". The Clammy 12" is the first in a line of rulers and actual prototype development starts this week! (Please note that these images are early mockups and may change a bit as we complete the prototype.)
Out of my desire to machine piece the traditional clamshell quilt motif, a few years ago, I blew up the templates to 8" and 12" and put them in a free pattern that sort of took on a life of it's own called the Glam Clam Quilt.
It's by far my most popular class and, as I've traveled across the US to teach it the only complaint that my students had is that they didn't like cutting the clamshells out by hand. So, I developed a slightly different method for piecing them and started designing a ruler. I didn't want a single function ruler so I started looking at how the ruler can be used for more than one purpose. After working with it for awhile I realized that with the proper markings and a fold or two you can use this ruler to make FIVE shapes!!
I'm so excited to be able to design patterns around these classic quilt shapes that I already have a love for. I'm even more excited to see what all of you make with The Clammy line of rulers as well!
Quilt Cadets is a line of patterns and products to teach kids how to quilt through sewing.
Quilt Cadets is perfect for the parent or grandparent that wants to share quilting and sewing with the little ones in their lives with projects that appeal to kids.
It's also great for that kid that doesn't have a sewist around that wants to try to figure it out on their own. The patterns are also great for quilt and sewing machine shops to use to design classes around.
The patterns are heavily illustrated and written in an easy to read format. They are designed to build confidence and encourage creative exploration through sewing. Many patterns have variations and "Design Your Own" elements to them. Most patterns are designed to appeal to both boys and girls.
There is a "virtual" quilt club element to the Quilt Cadet experience where Cadets can send off for membership cards and earn points for badges. Each pattern comes with a little surprise included like a temporary tattoo or a sticker.
The Quilt Cadets website is currently under construction and is planned to be a safe space for kids to be able to share their sewing and quilting creations.
With the successful funding of this Kickstarter campaign I will produce 9 products:
- Four Latifah Saafir Studios patterns
- Three Quilt Cadets patterns
- The initial run of The Clammy 12" ruler
- and, One Quilt Cadets instructional booklet
With over a year in the development of these two brands these projects are close to completion, many of the patterns have been tested and edited and I will be able to have all 9of these products print ready on or before the 15th of October.
In addition, once these patterns are launched and income is being generated, I have dozens of patterns and products that are in various stages of development and will be able to be brought to market quickly.
With successful funding, this project will fund a total of 9 products!
Patterns run anywhere from $500 for booklet only patterns to $1000 for booklet and CD/templates. Most of my patterns being template based are on the higher end for production cost. In addition, the first run of The Clammy 12" ruler will run about $2000. These cost estimates include shipping and packaging costs as well.
In addition to the product costs, I've also budgeted for the included shipping cost for sending out rewards and Kickstarter and Amazon Payment processing fees.
Thank you so much for exploring my Kickstarter project. It would mean the world to me if you backed my project. Kickstarter is an all or nothing endeavor and every dollar counts towards reaching the goal!
Risks and challenges
The Clammy 12" is in prototype development right now and with successful funding, I'll just have to give the word to start production. I have two manufacturers lined up so I have options if there are delays at the production facilities.
The patterns are about 80% complete with the last few stages of completion being a few illustrations and cover artwork. I am working on completing this as the Kickstarter campaign is progressing. I'll be using a local printer and print time is roughly 7-10 days. I have identified a backup printer if necessary and have built a few weeks into my timeframe ensure successful delivery.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
