We're excited to announce that we're almost done with construction on our new Spitz location at 1201 East Wilmington Avenue in the heart of the Sugar House neighborhood (just east of the Whole Foods and Bed, Bath, & Beyond). We want to make the huge patio area at our new location as sweet as possible, so to fully realize our dream of bringing the European beer garden experience to SLC we've decided to offer some awesome rewards here on Kickstarter to raise money. Check out the rewards on the right, pick your favorite (or favorites, there's no limit on how many you choose), and then please share this page with all your friends!
How do the rewards work? Why Kickstarter?
We decided to come to Kickstarter because we have such an amazing community of people who love Spitz and our take on Mediterranean street food, sangria, cocktails, and craft beer. We're an independent local business and we wanted to reward our loyal followers by giving you first dibs at the exclusive rewards we are offering as part of this campaign. Many of you have been supporting us from the beginning, you've signed up for our newsletter, and you eat at our downtown location frequently. You are the heart and soul of Spitz. You are the reason we wake up in the morning and bust our asses every day to provide the best possible experience. It's all about you.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing funding platform (meaning we have to reach our goal, otherwise you don't get charged, we don't get any funding, and no one gets rewards), so we've set our initial goal fairly low. If we raise the $4777 we set as our goal we'll be able to build some custom tables and benches for the patio, and that will be the start of our European style beer garden. We've got grand plans to add some sweet lighting and sound systems to the patio, and we also want to add more games (in addition to the ones we offer now, like Cards Against Humanity, Uno, Trivial Pursuit, etc. Please let us know if you have suggestions!). To get to this goal we're offering discounted gift cards, exclusive Kickstarter only rewards like our Mug Club Membership and t-shirts, and discounted catering & private event packages. Check out all the rewards to the right, and if you have any questions post them to the FAQ or comments sections, or reach out via email or social media.
Essentially the more money we raise the cooler the patio will be and the more games and fun things we'll have to entertain you while you enjoy your food. We'd love to set up a Little Free Library (or our own version of a lending library) and have other cool games to enjoy on the patio (corn hole, giant Jenga, giant chess, Kan Jam, Spike Ball, really any cool fun outdoor games...), but we need your help!
Here's a quick list of some of the games we'd like to add, if you have more recommendations please post them in the comments!
- Awkward Turtle - The Adult Party Game
- Phase 10 card game
- Pass The Pigs (Party Edition)
- LCR® Left Center Right dice game
- Bang! the dice game
- Farkle dice game
- No Thanks card game
- Zombie dice
- Skull board game
- Never Have I Ever, The Card Game of Poor Life Decisions
- More Cards Against Humanity, Crabs Against Humanity, Apples to Apples, Uno, Yahtzee, etc
Soon we'll announce a few stretch goals that will add extra incentive for you to share our campaign with your family, friends, and social networks. In the meantime please check out our rewards, share with everyone you know, and hit us up with any feedback!
Spitz? Who are you and what is döner kebab?
We're Josh Hill and Tanner Slizeski and for years we've been dreaming about bringing the Döner kebab (pronounced duh-ner keh-bob) back to Utah. We opened our first location downtown (at 35 East Broadway Ave.) about a year and a half ago and we've been amazed at the response we've gotten from customers literally from day 1. The frequent line out our door is a good sign that the legion of Spitz fanatics is constantly growing, so we're pumped to be opening our second location to bring the goodness of our Mediterranean street food to everyone in and around the Sugarhouse neighborhood.
Döner Kebab (pronounced du-ner-keh-bob) is a Turkish phrase that literally translates as “rotating meat”, not to be confused with “shish kebab” which means “skewered meat.”
Spitz’s döner kebabs are made with freshly minced lamb and beef or chicken which is then cooked on a rotating vertical broiler to allow its juices to drip down and caramelize on the surface. The meat is shaved off into paper-thin strips and stuffed into sandwiches, wraps or salads with house-made sauces, toppings and sides. The result is a delicious yet healthy cuisine loved the world over and finally brought to you here in Utah by Spitz.
What else can I get with my gift card if I choose that as a reward?
All gift cards never expire, are reloadable, and have no cash value (must be redeemed in store). You can check out our full menu here. Any of our wraps, sandwiches, or salads can be served with falafel. If you've never tried falafel we highly recommend it. We grind up chickpeas (often times called garbanzo beans) with a proprietary blend of spices and then form them into balls that get lightly fried and cooked to order. It's a great option for vegetarians, vegans, or anyone looking to try something new and eat healthy.
Another one of the most popular menu items we have are our Street Cart Fries. Our famous fries (either regular or sweet potato) topped with garlic aioli, feta, onion, green pepper, tomato, olives, pepperoncinis and chili sauce. By themselves they are amazing, but better yet make it "The Works" and add your choice of döner meat or falafel and zesty feta!
The list goes on, including Doquitos (think Mediterranean taquito... But better) and the Döner basket (all the goodness we have to offer in one big bread basket, includes salad, fries, döner meat, falafel ball, fried pita & hummus, and all the veggies and sauce your heart desires).
To get a better idea of everything we have to offer, feast your eyes on our Instagram (warning, you will get hungry).
What is your timeline? Where can I claim my reward?
Our Sugar House location will be opening the beginning of July (we're shooting for a soft open Monday July 6th, but we'll make sure to keep all backers updated throughout the process). All gift cards will be available to pick up at either of our locations. T-shirts will be available to pickup at either location, or we can ship them to you. The mug club will be good at both of our locations.
Tell me more about the catering/event packages?
Our catering package rewards will give you a discount on our buffet style catering for parties of 20 people and up. Our buffet style catering includes elegant trays of fresh baked pita bread, our beef & lamb and chicken döner meat, falafel balls, diced vegetables and toppings, fried pita strips, Greek salad and bowls of our wonderful hummus, tzatziki, zesty feta, chili sauce, balsamic dressing and garlic aioli that are custom made to the size of your party. If you have more questions about catering shoot us an email at email@example.com or call and ask for a manager at 801-364-0286.
What will the T-shirts look like? What's up with the mug club?
We've got a couple ideas in mind for the t-shirts, but we're also open to ideas. We may just go with the classy and classic logo t-shirt featuring our logo on the front of a black tee, but see below for a couple other designs. We'll take some votes and pick the most popular one. These will be exclusive to Kickstarter and not sold any where else.
The mug club membership will only be available to our Kickstarter backers, and it's limited to 50 people. The special card will give discounts on all our beers on tap at both locations, $1 off pints ($3 pints!), $2 off steins (stein for the price of a pint), $3 off pitchers. It'll be good until August of next year, and at that point we'll give you an option to renew and invite your friends.
Please post any additional questions in the FAQ below, or add your comments and we'll make sure to answer as quick as we can! Thank you and please share with your friends!
Risks and challenges
Just to be clear, we're not doing this for the money. We have an awesome community of Spitz fans already and we're coming to Kickstarter in part to offer everyone a way to participate in the construction and build out process, and to reward everyone who's supported us along the way with great incentives and rewards. Our biggest challenge will be sticking to our timeline, but we have a great general contractor and we've taken care of all the necessary planning so we don't foresee any risk of not opening in July.
Once we're open all of our focus and energy will be on providing an amazing customer experience. That means hot food served in a timely manner, a clean restaurant, cold drinks, and friendly smiles from everyone serving you. We plan on fulfilling most rewards electronically, and anything that needs to be shipped will be sent out in a timely fashion so we meet projected deadlines.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
