I'm Valerie Wicks, author of Seven Spectral, a middle-grade fantasy/adventure series about seven young heroes and their seven worlds, each a different color of the rainbow! A year ago, I self-published my first novel, Seven Spectral: Into the Red World. It was a challenging journey, but I learned so much from it. And now, a year later, I am about to self-publish my second novel, Seven Spectral: The Orange World Outlaw! I am so excited, but there is much left to be done!
Self-publishing is a project in and of itself. One of the most important parts of this project is pre-sales. I am not creating a Kickstarter to raise money for my personal needs. I am raising money, in the form of pre-orders, for the release of the book. By doing pre-orders now, I can obtain the funds needed to release the book and continue writing the series through to the end of the rainbow. You, however would not be "donating" so much as purchasing a product for the actual cost of the product and no more. It's a win win!
Here's a little bit about the books to give you some context:
In the first book Into the Red World, we journeyed with Emerald from her home in the Green World to the egyptian Red World, where the mystery of her missing mother led her into a perilous plot of deific proportions. The Orange World Outlaw follows our second hero of the series, Javier Jones, on a quest to save his home town from a horde of vicious outlaws. The town's only hope is for Javier to go to the capital of the Orange World, Oz Canyon, and obtain much needed resources. But as he hitches a ride with a traveling circus and strikes out into the frontier, he has no idea the supernatural dangers waiting for him at his destination. All he knows is there's a child-jester from the circus who won't leave him alone, and a mysterious pyramid-shaped crystal that could be a piece in a much larger puzzle involving all seven worlds.
We just shot a book trailer for The Orange World Outlaw (to see the trailer for the first book, visit my website http://www.sevenspectral.com), and through the course of this pre-order campaign I will be posting tidbits of it as the edit comes together. It's already looking awesome!
Other exciting news -- I TURNED 27 THIS WEEK! WOO! What better way to celebrate than to launch a Kickstarter Campaign? Also, you will be hearing more news about the Into the Red World audiobook, which will become available as part of the pre-order packages if we can finish it before the campaign ends.
Please help me meet my pre-order goals of $500. To put it into perspective, that's the equivalent of 83 eBook orders or 42 paperback copies. Not too many if we all work together! And hey, at the end of the day, you will have purchased an adventure for yourself. Who doesn't like a death-defying adventure? Especially when you don't even have to leave the comfort of your own home to have it :).
I've done all the heavy lifting, so just click a purchase, sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!
Risks and challenges
Writing a book is a journey. From inception (10 years old), to completion (27!), there's a lot of time, energy, worry, elation, confusion, epiphany, confusion again, okay the real epiphany this time, sorry I can't hang out, nope still can't hang out gotta write, still writing, I hate this story!, no no no story I'm so sorry I love you so much I was just frustrated, I finished the first draft!, ah take a break -- okay we're back, just spent 10 hours listening to all my editors rip me a new one, edit, edit, edit, is Valerie dead?, edit, edit, edit...wait for it...AND THE BOOK'S DONE!!!
So, that's pretty much the process! It takes about a year once you get rolling. I know it sounds crazy. But crazy fun, am I right?!
Now comes the publishing. There's a lot of book formatting, ISBN purchasing, cover illustrating, trailer launching, event organizing, facebooking, tweeting, blog touring, etc. that still needs to happen.
The more pre-orders, the more publicity and success and the better this book does. That creates a higher likelihood that I can continue with the series and write the Yellow Book. If you guys take a chance and get on board now, then in a few short years you will have a full spectrum of books to enjoy. I won't give up on writing them for you, so hopefully you'll give it a chance!
