We never think we will become victims of genocide. Pretty Village remembers those killed and gives back voices to those who survived.

THE STORY

‘Pretty Village’ is a story of extreme human suffering and endurance in the face of that suffering. It is a story of a shattering tragedy in which Serb neighbours perpetrated an atrocity against their Muslim neighbours, seemingly beyond repair. It is most of all a story of human resistance in the face of denial by the perpetrators of those crimes.

In the spring of 1991 Kevljani village was indistinguishable from the scores of other villages in the north-west of Bosnia. It was a place dominated by young energetic people who had so many dreams about the future: to experience new loves, for girls and boys to meet, to visit far and strange places, and then to establish a family and settle down, grow old and die gracefully in old age. For most Kevljani residents this is where life began and this is where it ended.

Fast forward twelve months and their future no longer exists. The violent attack unleashed by the Bosnian Serb nationalist forces marked the end of time. There was wholesale destruction of the community which had been thriving for several hundred years. Homes were destroyed, lives were shattered and former Kevljani inhabitants were no longer in charge of their own lives. Their lives now belonged to their Serb neighbours who placed them and controlled them in several locally formed concentration camps.

Survivors of this carnage were forced into exile. The only baggage they were allowed to carry with them were their traumas and their pre-war memories. They yearned to go back home.

Those who eventually returned came face-to-face with mass graves hiding their loved ones. They encountered discrimination from those who persecuted them in 1992. They came up against denial of their suffering. It was as if they had no history or memory.

This film charts their journey from the happy days of yesteryear to their current daily struggle in the world which refuses to give them their past back in the form of more than 1000 people missing and a memorial on the site of the massacres executed at the Omarska camp, now owned by Arcelor Mittal, the sponsors of The London Orbit. The perpetrators want to be forgiven, yet remarkably they seek forgiveness for the crimes they continue to deny.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

So far we have worked on the project for more than two years. The project has now reached the critical post-production stage. Our main challenge is to finish the film by 31 March 2014. Not meeting this challenge creates a risk of not being able to enter the film into several key film festivals, which are an important opportunity to bring the film to new audiences and to conduct awareness raising and build support for the issues covered by the film. However, should you help us to meet our target, it would remove all the risks that lie ahead of us as we have already lined up specialists needed to complete the remaining jobs within the deadline.

The funds sought would cover the cost of colour grading, sound design and sound mix, and it would pay for some extra sound track, archive costs and festival marketing.

£10,000 is the minimum amount we need to complete the project and fulfill all rewards. Once we receive pledges of £10,000 we hope reach our ideal target of £15,000 which would also pay for digital cinema print, and cover travel expenses to several key film festivals.
