About this project
We Are Sound Carta Y Su Orquesta!
HEY! We are giving away a free night at the posh Kimpton Hotel "Eventi" in Midtown Manhattan on Saturday June 9th, 2012 (on the eve of the parade). You are automatically registered for this at the $25 level or above.
We are urgently trying to raise money for a deadline to pay for our performance showcase in the Nat'l Puerto Rican Day Parade in NYC, June 10 2012. The costs for this are much too great for us to handle without strength in numbers. Float costs are a minimum of $7,000 - 10,000, not to mention flying two of our members from South America and Latin America to get here! We hope the success of this campaign will give us the exposure we need to setup our first tour. We are intent on bringing educational elements to our tour stops with master classes and pre-show open salsa jams.
Check out all of our offerings. It's easy to join us at any level! Everything helps and every donation is sincerely appreciated.
Sound Carta y Su Orquesta
Nos Fuimos! (We Outta Here!)
Straight out of Brooklyn-NYC, we are a 10-piece orchestra with a fresh, poppin, groovin, in-your-face sound that mixes old school salsa with today's hip-hop.
Our fearless frontman, Sound Carta (aka Soundboy Cartagena), brings his personal style of rapping latin, spanglish-style straight from Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY -- "from the hood of all hoods; straight off the grimiest block". Raised in a family rooted in the salsa tradition, he is a product of his culture and his environment.
From a young age, he always beat boxed and rapped and was given the nickname Soundboy; Sound for short.
While becoming a well-known rapper in the east coast, Sound's true vision was to do a bigger project. Something that strayed from all the commercial production that so much hip hop and pop music is made from. He wanted a real hip hop orchestra -- a Salsa Orchestra with some of the best musicians to collaborate and begin creating a new wave of real music.
Hip Hop con Latin Combinaciones!
Wes Reid met Sound through sheer coincidence by responding to a Craigslist ad to audition a drummer with groove and hip hop chops, but with sabór and spice. At the time, Wes was studying with Bobby Sanabria (multiple grammy nominated latin composer and drummer) at The New School for Jazz and was soaking up as much about the music as he could.
After the audition (May 2011), Sound and Wes hit it off and began laying the groundwork for this new group and production. With the framework of the group started, Wes began calling other musicians around the scene in NYC.
Over the course of June, July and August 2011 within a handful of rehearsals, Sound Carta Y Su Orquesta arranged music for a power packed 6-song EP. We hit the rehearsals hard and, by the grace of a higher power, were able to record all tracks with the full orchestra, percussion and background vocalists all in the eleventh hour -- just before our guitarist had to leave the country.
(seriously, Juan ran out of the studio with his guitar while I chased after him with cab fare for him to make the train on his way out of the country)
With personal finances drained for the sake of getting this music out in a world-class production, we are in the next stretch of this race and we need some help to buy our ROCKET FUEL!
We have an incredibly talented group of musicians that appear on our upcoming debut release:
