About

What is Hills of Milk & Honey?

Hills of Milk and Honey is a family farm located in Dripping Springs, Texas. We are committed to uniting our community while seeking to preserve food security for the people of the Texas Hill Country and beyond.

It is our desire to build a healthy community of organisms through the underground soil-food-web while providing nutrient-dense food for the community living above ground. Our farm focuses on rotational livestock grazing and no-till crop planting. It is our long-term goal to create an agricultural ecosystem on our farm that is sustainable and self-sufficient.

In turn, we hope folks of all ages who participate in classes, camps and tours at Hills of Milk and Honey will be inspired to create innovative ways to continue this movement for generations to come.

What is Our Goal?

Our most pressing need is air-conditioned classroom space for our summer campers! We offer camp weeks for preschoolers, elementary, middle schoolers, as well as a camp week dedicated to children, teens and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Phase 1 | Help Us Build a Farm Classroom!

We offer camps, classes and tours to children and adults in order to grow future farmers and build a thriving community revolving around regenerative agriculture practices.

Children enjoy becoming a farmer for a week when attending camp on the farm. However, the summer heat requires that an air-conditioned classroom space be available for rest and quiet time before heading back out into the gardens and with the livestock.

Once built, this classroom space will be used year-round to teach gardening and composting classes, beekeeping classes, art workshops, farmer educator workshops, and lots of hands-on experiences for children and adults throughout the year.

What If We Pass Our Main Goal?

If we pass our goal of $15,000, the money will be used to upgrade the rest of the farm! Check out our plans for growth below.

Phase 2 | Farm Upgrades

Currently, water is available on the farm from a well, but as we grow, we need to upgrade the water system throughout the farm. We dream of days where we no longer must pump water into trailers and haul water all over the farm to fill livestock troughs.

Our goal is to trench and pump well water throughout our fields right to the animals’ pastures. The well water would be dedicated to the farm. For the humans in our home, and guests staying in our farm guest house, we plan to build a rainwater harvesting system to collect, and pump water from our 3,000 sq ft barn up to the homes as a dedicated water source.

We have partially constructed farm hand living quarters built that would be extremely handy to complete with running water, full bathroom, and bedroom space. This has been bid out and is just waiting for the funds to complete the project.

A greenhouse on the farm will allow us to get a head start in the winter as we grow vegetables for a small CSA program for our local community. This greenhouse will have a watering system installed and operate as an incubator for college interns taking part in on-farm lab experiments.

Phase 3 | Tractor

We currently borrow and rent heavy equipment as needed, and that has worked fine until now. It is necessary for us to purchase a tractor in order to implement the next phases of the farm which include completing the implementation of the whole farm permaculture design.

This design has already been created by a permaculture designer and is awaiting funds to move forward. The tractor will allow us to quickly get to work. The tractor plus volunteers will create a beautiful farm that will serve as an example to the community of what permaculture practices look like and feel like up close and personal as people visit the farm for camps, classes and tours.

Phase 4 | Overnight Bunkhouse & Restrooms for Large Groups

There are several upgrades to the farm that would allow us to expand our offerings to our community. The most pressing is to increase the number of restrooms on site. Once we add more restrooms, our capacity can increase. In addition, we have a waiting list of folks excited for us to be able to offer overnight camp experiences.

We hope to soon be able to build out a portion of the barn to add overnight bunk rooms for summer overnight camps, family reunions, etc. By adding the needed restrooms, in addition to the overnight bunk rooms, we will be all set!

Phase 5 | Teaching Restaurant

It is our desire to close the loop on the whole food system. We already have a chef on staff, ready and anxious to teach children and adults how to cook using whole, nutrient-dense foods that are raised on site, or within 50 miles of the farm.

If we were able to build a teaching restaurant, we would be able to have folks come to the farm, learn how to plant food, raise livestock, harvest food, process the meats, prep and prepare the food, serve the food, and compost remaining scraps back into the soil to start the process all over again.

This is the dream. We want to provide educational opportunities throughout the whole process right here on the farm while connecting with the local community and supporting small-scale, local farmers the entire time. We believe our grandparents would be proud of us as we strive to live by their example.

Risks and challenges

Farming in and of itself is entirely dependent upon the weather. The most used app for most farmers is a weather app. Although we have a timeline we prefer for implementing everything on our wish list, we are prepared for our timeline needing to adjust a bit if the weather throws us off our plan from time to time. All of our rewards will be provided to backers regardless of the level of progress we are making as we apply the funds that have been so generously awarded. We have provided many rewards that involve folks visiting the farm because we can't think of a better way for you to feel like you are a part of the Hills of Milk and Honey community. Thank you for your financial support!
