About

EL RIO THEATRE:

In the pioneer town of Springerville, is located one of the historical gems of Arizona’s long affiliation with the movie industry – the historic El Rio Theatre. The El Rio Theatre is recognized as Arizona’s oldest active movie house weathering the ravages of time and technology with operations spanning almost 100 years.

Initial construction of the adobe and plank movie house was started in 1913. Completed in 1915, the El Rio Theatre was originally opened as the Apache Theater and showed silent flickers on a hand-cranked projector in its debut to the townspeople. In 1937 the name of the theater was changed from the Apache to the El Rio which has endured until today.

This theater is a single screen 288 seat treasure that evokes the feel and charm of the golden age of movies as played out in rural communities across the western United States. It provided a temporary escape from the drudgery and routine of daily life to exotic lands and adventures – if only for a few hours. Who today could imagine the excitement and thrill of watching first run debuts of Gone with the Wind, Casablanca, or the great westerns like Stagecoach, High Noon, or The Good, the Bad and the Ugly?

The El Rio Theatre became the source of many fond and often recounted childhood memories in its role of community center where kids were dropped off by their parents with a couple of dimes in pocket money on Saturday mornings to watch the next episodes of Roy Rogers, Tarzan, and the Lone Ranger or a double-feature complete with Superman cartoons and “Movietone News” shorts.

The El Rio has captured and preserved much of that feel with its original theater seats from the 1930s, the sound of 35mm film spinning across a vintage Italian projector, and the aroma of popcorn made from its 1950s Manley popcorn popper. . . . . .

Across the span of 100 years, it is hard to imagine how many first dates . . . how many first kisses . . . and how many  first childhood encounters with the magic of the movies occurred at the El Rio?  Locals often comment that the El Rio has always been an important part of the community as nearly every teenager in Round Valley for the last 50 years has worked there in one capacity or another.  Everyone has taken for granted that it would always be a fixture anchoring the to

It is, however, now time for the El Rio Theater to once again adapt to new technology or risk having to shut its doors. It is not the first time. One of the biggest transitions was from silent films to “talkies” when the concern was that “no one wanted to hear the actors speak”! Now, with the movie industry phasing out 35mm film by the end of 2014, it is time to transition from 35mm film to digital projection with the complimentary sound systems required to make the audience “experience” movies in ways that they never could in the past. Failure to adopt the new technology can only mean one thing . . . the end of the line for the El Rio Theatre . .  Lights out just one year prior to its 100th anniversary.

Locally, no one wants the El Rio Theatre to close its doors in this tiny rural community where the next movie theater is over 50 miles away by two-lane road. The bottom line, however, is that without movie distribution, the El Rio Theatre is a theater in name only. Round Valley residents have overwhelmingly expressed support and pitched in where possible to help save the El Rio Theater but our efforts have fallen short. Based on the approximately $100,000 needed to upgrade the projection and sound systems combined with some basic interior remodeling and electrical improvements needed to accommodate the equipment, we find ourselves with a shortfall of about $50,000 that we are looking to raise through the generous contributions of patrons of the fine arts like you. This is your one opportunity to help preserve one of the truly historic Arizona movie houses and to ensure that it reaches its 100th birthday and celebrates its centennial anniversary next year.

Please help us reach our goal of $50,000 with the most generous contribution that you feel you can comfortably make . . . it is that critical to us and to the survival of the El Rio Theatre. Once we reach our goal and gently transform the El Rio Theater for 21st century technology, we can once again show first run movies and continue the traditions that over time have created more nostalgic memories than just about any other recreational activity for the people of Springerville, Eagar, Greer, Nutrioso, and Alpine. We sincerely appreciate your financial support and look forward to the El Rio Theater debuting first run movies in rural Arizona for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren for another hundred years!

Risks and challenges

The primary risks associated with this project is that if we are not funded, then it may be necessary to shut down the theater since there will literally be nothing to show without 35mm film.

Challenges will include bringing a 100 year old building up to contemporary standards to handle a new projection system and to comply with current municipal codes. Secondary challenges will be to find bridge funding to support the upgrade in the event of failure to fund on Kickstarter.
