WASD is Germany’s hottest video game magazine. But it's only available in German at the moment. We’d like to change that. With your help, people all over the world will soon be able to read our bookazine, the perfect outlet for anyone who sees video games as more than just products, who shares our passion for the most exciting medium of our time. WASD is built around good design and quality journalism, with no room for rumors, paid content, trailer analyses or boring charts and figures. Following this recipe, WASD has built up a loyal fanbase in Germany and earned its place as a central institution of German games criticism. But why stop there? We believe that people all over the world would fall in love with our bookazine if they got a chance to read it. With your help, we want to produce an international issue, translated into English. A global publication for a global hobby – independent, diverse, colorful and gorgeous.
The first issue of WASD was published five years ago, but our approach has stayed the same since then: WASD covers everything sophisticated video game aficionados care about: indie and mainstream games, debates and controversies, the past, present and future of interactive entertainment. At around 200 pages, WASD issues are as long and detailed as a book, but thanks to their exceptional design and beautiful illustrations, they look like colorful magazines on the inside. That’s why we call WASD a bookazine. New issues are published every six months and they have won a variety of prestigious awards.
We want to translate the next issue of WASD into English and on top of that, we want to bring in new writers from around the world, who will have their work translated back into German for the German issue. If this crowdfunding campaign is successful, there’s a good chance we will be able to keep publishing WASD on an international scale even past the next issue. WASD issues always have a theme. In the past, we have focused on topics such as Money, Politics, Death, Retro, and Revolution. WASD 12 is dedicated to the subject of “Fun! Fun! Fun!” and will deal with the question of what exactly draws people to video games. Where’s the fun in killing giant radioactive cockroaches for hours on end? What’s the appeal of spending your weekends managing a soccer team, pizza chain or prison? Why do some people like to harvest corn or drive trucks on their PC after they come home from work? And last but not least: do video games even need to be fun?
For this first international issue, we will be working with well-known writers from around the world – in addition to our veteran writers from Germany and Austria.
By pledging to our campaign, you can preorder the next issue of WASD or even grab a bunch of copies at a discount – plus it’s your chance to snag the stylish WASD luggage stickers available exclusively on Kickstarter.
We have also printed a limited edition of WASD Slim, a bundle of some of our favorite articles from the past five years – translated into English. Here is a link to the free digital issue.
If you’re looking to leave your mark on games culture, we’ll immortalize you with a handcrafted illustration of your likeness in our bookazine. There’s something for everyone, just browse our rewards and have a look for yourself.
By popular demand, we have added more exclusive rewards to our campaign, including WASD towels that would make Douglas Adams cry tears of joy, extra stylish WASD t-shirts, retro letterpress art prints and much more! There’s something for everyone, even for … babies!

WASD has built up a loyal fanbase in Germany over the past five years, but the bookazine still very much depends on the passion and hard work of our entire team. We don’t have a publishing house to back us up, no sponsorships or ad clients who might try to influence us. But we have you, and the miracle of crowdfunding! With your help, we would like to make our dream of going international with WASD come true.
Given our focus on gorgeous design and high production value, WASD is not exactly cheap to produce. We also make a point of compensating all our writers and illustrators fairly for their work. For this international issue, our main expenses will be printing and translation, as well as distribution and a few one-time expenses like an English website and store page.

Risiken und Herausforderungen
Publishing a bookazine like WASD isn’t easy, but we’ve gained a lot of experience over the past five years. We have a translator, we have distribution partners and the first drafts for our next issue are starting to come in, so we’re ready to go. If we can reach our funding goal, there will be an English edition of WASD at the end of 2017 and people in Rio, Tokyo and New York will finally be able to read our bookazine.Näheres zur Rechenschaftspflicht auf Kickstarter
