Who doesn't want their very own pet trilobite? Now you can have one too!

It's easy to find plush models of large prehistoric animals like dinosaurs, mammoths, and saber-tooth cats. But here at the Paleontological Research Institution (PRI), we recognize that creatures both large and small are a huge part of life on Earth. Our wildly successful plushie line, Paleozoic Pals, was designed to bring lesser-known and lesser sized -yet just as important- fossil creatures to life for the community of scientists, students, and the public as a whole to enjoy.

The model for our newest design, the trilobite Greenops boothi, lived during the Devonian Period 380 million years ago! We need your help to resurrect this ancient invertebrate and turn it into a soft, 8-inch plushie that is larger (and probably greener!) than life. These plushies will be available in only limited quantities, so get yours before they go extinct again!

$5

A special limited edition Paleoart Digital Wallpaper pack of five designs, available in your choice of several different screen resolutions. These stunning images were created for PRI by artist Barbara Page for a mural called Rock of Ages, Sands of Time, which depicts the 540 million years of life on Earth.

  • Everyone at funding level $200 or higher will get a limited-edition photographic trilobite poster print.

$20,000 - Eurypterids Rise

Our popular limited edition Paleozoic Plush eurypterid (also known as a sea scorpion) was quickly sold out. If we reach $20,000, we'll resurrect him from extinction!

  • Everyone at funding level $25 or more will get a bonus eurypterid plushie!
  • We'll also produce a second paleoart wallpaper pack for everyone!
Eurypterid Plush - produced at $20,000 raised
Eurypterid Plush - produced at $20,000 raised

We also created several new levels:

  • $20 for one 16" eurypterid plush
  • $35 for one trilobite and one eurypterid
  • $50 for two trilobites and one eurypterid

These levels are intended to allow backers to purchase different combinations of items, including the eurypterid. These levels do not receive a bonus eurypterid.

$30,000

  • We'll work on designing an all-new Paleozoic Pal, which you, the backers, will get to vote on. Here are the contenders:
  • Ammonite: These shelled cephalopods first appeared in the Devonian Period, and stayed around for 334 million years, until they went extinct by the end of the Cretaceous.
  • Dunkleosteus: Reaching lengths up to 33 feet long and weighing up to 4 tons, these armored fish roamed the oceans during the Late Devonian.
  • Hurdia: This strange foot-long animal, with its spike-shaped hollow head shield and spiny appendages for snatching food, was one of the larger predators in the Cambrian seas.
  • Tiktaalik:This Devonian lobe-finned fish has fins with basic wrist bones and finger-like rays. It represents the evolutionary transition from water to land.

$40,000 - Paleozoic Proliferation

  • We'll produce the new plushie voted upon at the previous goal.
  • We'll make all three designs - Greenops trilobite, eurypterid, and the new design, available online for anyone worldwide to buy.
  • If all goes well, Paleozoic Pals will no longer be limited edition - we'll be able to continue producing them, and hopefully make more designs in the future.
  • We'll be spreading the joys of science and Earth history through households around the world!

So Why Should I Buy a Trilobite?

When you donate towards production of our Paleozoic Pals, you're not simply buying a plushie. You're supporting an organization with a long, rich history and outstanding capabilities in Earth science and environmental research. PRI makes a difference in the lives of hundreds of people across the country and the world, from students in central New York and teachers in California, to educational reformers in Washington DC and scientists in France. Our educational programs aim to increase science literacy at all levels of society, from early to adult learners. We are national leaders in providing innovative ideas and materials for Earth systems science education, including oceans, atmospheres, rocks, glaciers, and life itself. If you'd like to learn more about PRI's national outreach efforts, please check out the video below!

PRI's two main venues, the Museum of the Earth and the Cayuga Nature Center, pursue and integrate education and research in order to increase knowledge, educate society, and encourage wise stewardship of the Earth. Our high-quality products affect real lives in our community. Here's a true story from a New York earth science teacher:

"I have a young man in my class who showed up with much resistance to the process of education. Although he attended regularly and was polite, he simply would not do the work. When I discuss the Geologic Past unit, I have my props that include Charlie the Trilobite and Uri the Eurypterid. These are plush toys I bought from the PRI booth at STANYS a few years back. This young man perked up at them. He asked to hold the Eurypterid... He was so fascinated by it that he did research on them. It became routine that he would pick up Uri and hold on to it while he worked. And he worked. His grades turned around, and his participation increased."

Even the simplest little things have the power to educate, inspire, and turn a life around. Thank you for supporting the Paleontological Research Institution and our production of Paleozoic Pals.

Risks and challenges

We don't anticipate many risks or challenges to this project, as the prototype for the plushie has already been created and the manufacturer is ready to begin production when we give the word. That being said, there is always the chance for a delay in production. We will keep our backers updated throughout the process and the plushies will be shipped as soon as we have them in hand!
