About this project
I would like to thank the following institutions for the support in making the Kickstarter film:
AS SEEN IN
WHAT HAVE PEOPLE SAID ABOUT THIS PROJECT?
"It’s design fiction *and* a Kickstarter. What could go wrong?" Bruce Sterling, WIRED Magazine
"@Gaynoir might be the one and only person whose kickstarter campaign and bank robberies i'm glad to endorse" Regine Debatty, WeMakeMoneyNotArt
"The project truly feels like the work of an insane person… and I mean that in the best way possible." Matthew Manos, Beautiful Decay
WHAT IS THIS PROJECT ABOUT?
Under Black Carpets is a speculative proposal for the design of a meticulously calculated bank heist of 5 banks that surround 'One Wilshire', located in downtown Los Angeles.
WAIT, ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO ROB THESE BANKS?
No. This is strictly a design / art project.
The exhibition of the work will be presented to the audience as a police investigation, detailing the remaining evidential material after the event has taken place, something that could be argued or challenged as material (evidence) in a court of law. The work itself will take form as sculptures, architectural models, technical drawings, films and photography. It will open as a solo exhibition (Special Project) at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale opening from Sep 12th - Dec 15th 2013.
HOW DID YOU CONDUCT YOUR RESEARCH?
The project has already gone through an initial two years of research in various stages. The first year was supported and funded by the Ridley Scott Associates Residency award.
The first stages of work consisted the devouring of academic materials, context examinations and discussions with a variety of experts within the field of 'heist' crime. From Police commissioners, forensic scientists to criminal attorneys. I also broadened the research to look at a more diverse source of experts that could offer knowledge to serve as 'accomplices' to the project. Experts in fields ranging from security camera manufacturers, magicians, escape artists and vault crackers to demolitions experts, dog trainers and private investigators.
The latter stage of research took place in Los Angeles where by took part in advisory training simulations with the LAPD. This took place at the Los Angeles Police Academy, just East of Hollywood. The objective being to determine how police might respond to a robbery situation with recordings of response time, policy procedures, vehicle handling, civilian control and hostage negotiation.
I have also shown the earlier research last summer at the Art Center College of Design, Pasadena.
WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE THE RESEARCH?
Yes! I will be self-publishing a very small run of books to accompany the exhibition, as a context to the outcome. The book will contain, photographic documentation, interviews and essays.
And as a backer, you can also pledge to receive the limited Kickstarter copy of the book, in it's full form after the exhibition opens.
WHAT DO YOU NEED THE MONEY FOR?
I have been offered a great opportunity to show the exhibition at the Lisbon Architecture Triennale in September. The work is due to go on show at MUDE Design and Fashion Museum.
Despite this great space and opportunity, the city of Lisbon is currently struggling economically and budgets for the entire Triennale event are being cut, including my own.
The goal of the Triennale is to revitalise the city and allow Lisbon (despite the hard economic times we are all facing) to continue to see through a long standing tradition of hosting this huge cultural event.
I have a great team of people offering to work with me on this exhibition, but no budget!
So I am turning to Kickstarter!
All the funding will go towards the costs incurring to allow this exhibition to happen.
- the production and shipment of your rewards!
- realisation of architectural models to contextualise the plot
- design and fabrication of the different necessary pieces: 3D printed models, resins casts, large format photographs and mounting costs, video production, rental costs, set build, 3D modelling and the exhibition design (tables and plinths)
- the publication and design of the books
- shipping of all pieces to Lisbon
HOW CAN I HELP?
Thank you! You can help me raising the funds by becoming a backer and receive great rewards. You can also simply share this page with your network of friends and family!
SO WHAT REWARDS DO I GET AS A BACKER?
You are not just a backer, you are an accomplice. By supporting me in this bank heist, you are responsible for its success. You are sharing the risk with me, so I'll share the "profit" with you! :-)
As for any robbery, the more important your involvement is, the bigger the share you'll get. Have a look at the different great pledges on the right side. Below are some visuals of rewards, more to come soon.
WHAT WILL BE IN THE EXHIBITION?
The exhibition will be divided into 6 chapters of narrative, all of which I will post in detail throughout updates in this campaign.
Each of them will use a different media: scene reconstruction, short films, scale models and large format photographs to tell the story.
CHAPTER 1: THE DISTRACTION AT ONE WILSHIRE
CHAPTER 2: GETTING IN
CHAPTER 3: THE NEGOTIATION
CHAPTER 4: THE GETAWAY
CHAPTER 5: NO MAN’S LANDS
CHAPTER 6: ALIBIS
·WHERE WILL YOU EXHIBIT?
The exhibition will take place in the recently closed Banco Nacional Ultramarino's headquarters, situated in the heart of Lisbon, Portugal. The 1000 square foot bank vault is located inside the lower floors of the MUDE Design and Fashion Museum.
IS IT A ONE-OFF EXHIBITION?
No, I have various galleries interested in hosting the work, once completed. Galleries in New York and Los Angeles. (Unfortunately, I can't be specific and reveal their names until we have co-signed binding contracts) - but will keep you updated.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR LOOKING AT MY PAGE!
I can't wait to get you on board.
I would also like to thank the various contributors so far:
- MUDE Design and Fashion Museum, for letting me film inside the space and of course, for hosting the exhibition in September!
- The Lisbon Architecture Triennale, especially to Manuel Henriques and Isabel Antunes, for the being the greatest two people I could have met in Lisbon.
- Peter Ziegler for offering his voice.
- Sidekick Creatives for supporting me on the preparation for this campaign.
Risks and challenges
I will obviously not be heisting any banks for real. It is important to understand that this work is an artistic endeavour. The project aims to keep the proposal as something that's purely speculative.
I have been working on this project for a total of 2 years and the show is the concluding chapter of the work, so I'm really committed to finishing it, in a way that engages an audience inside this perfect exhibition space. It has been my main focus for 2 years and will continue to be until October.
The rewards will be the first thing I will tackle, once the campaign has ended.
I am a practicing artist and designer, whereby I am used to managing large and small budgets and meeting sharp deadlines. You can see more of my work here: www.ilonagaynor.co.uk
So far this project has been awarded the Ridley Scott Associates Residency in 2011 and the Art Center College of Design Summer Research Resident in 2012 - I am so close towards the finish line.
This Kickstarter campaign has been supported by Sidekick Creatives, they have helped me to build the campaign from scratch and advised on realistic delivery dates to minimise any unforeseen events. Their website: www.sidekickcreatives.comLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
