Overview

Now that you've finally got your hands on a Raspberry Pi Zero® , you're probably itching to make some fun embedded computer projects with it. What you need is an add on prototyping plate and a DIN rail enclosure from us to bring your project to a control cabinet.

RasPiBox Zero is an accessory for the Raspberry Pi Zero. The heart is an additional pcb with integrated USB hub, voltage regulator and breadboard. It fits together with the PiZero in a 3 module DIN rail enclosure.

  • milled 3 module DIN rail enclosure
  • assembled pcb with socket to plug in a Raspberry Pi Zero
  • integrated voltage regulator (input voltage 9..35V via 2 way terminal block)
  • integrated 4 port USB hub
  • breadboard / proto board for own circuits
  • marked SPI, I2C and UART connectors beside the breadboard area
  • 2x 2 way terminal blocks to connect external componets to the breadboard

The Raspberry Pi zero is connected via an internal USB cable to the internal USB hub. This USB hub provides 4 USB ports to connect WLAN sticks, USB memory sticks, keyboards, USB-Relays and other USB devices to the Raspberry Pi Zero. Please visit our website for additional information.

Proto board

The breadboard area can be used to add other interfaces (RS485, RS232, inputs and outputs etc.) to the Raspberry Pi Zero. Along the edges of the proto area, some important GPIOs (I2C/SPI/UART) and power pins (5V/3.3V/GND) are connected and marked. You can connect your work via 4 terminals with the world ouside the enclosure.

Enclosure

The pcb fits perfectely in an optional 3 module cap rail enclosure 53,5mm x 90mm x 58mm (W x H x D) for EN50022 DIN rails. It's easy to install it in a control cabinet.

Production

We will produce the pcb completely in Germany.  The raw enclosure comes also from a German company and the milling is done by a small company in northern Germany. This guarantees a high quality and fast production cycles.

Risks and challenges

The first prototype works well but the final design complete and the final prototype will be tested during the campaign.
The main source of delays will be the time it takes to get the boards fabricated and at worst if components go out of stock, usually around 40days.
We are using an exotic usb chip from China for the hub. It's very difficult to purchase these chips in Europe, but we've found a supplier here in Germany. Also the purchase and soldering of the micro usb plug and cable is tricky.
At the moment RasPiBox Zero runs perfect with Rasbian Wheezy and Jessie - but not Jessie Lite! We hope, we will find a solution for that problem.
