Stonehearth Development Update

Hi backers. Just wanted to drop in and let you know how things are progressing.

The team is now 5 members strong, and on Monday we'll be adding a 6th member to handle all the audio in the game. Right now we are marching toward our first playable release, which will ship in December. This involves a lot of bug fixing, polishing, and work on three core game features.

Crafting

The core crafting engine is pretty much done, and we're fine tuning things at this point. The "crafting engine" is the infrastructure to defined a crafter, list all his or her craftable recipes (weapons, furniture, etc.), and the AI for the crafter to find the ingredients for each recipe in the world, collect them up, and turn those ingredients into a crafted item.

This has taken a while to get right, but the good news is that the whole system is data driven, which means it's very straightforward for us to add new crafters to the system. And if you're so inclined, so can you!

Construction

We've overhauled the construction system to give you a lot more flexibility in how you construct your buildings. You'll be able to define any kind of floor-plan you like, not just square rooms, and for each part of the building (walls, roof, columns, etc) you can choose from one of many styles. In December we will only support 1 level buildings. We'll add support for multiple stories soon after the first release.

Personality

We're investing a lot of time to really breathe life in to each of your citizens. We're adding enough randomization options so that no two citizens in your town will look alike, and have just started working on what we call 'ambient AIs' or AIs that run when your workers don't have an explicit job to do. When they are idle, town citizens will do their own thing, maybe going and finding something interesting to look at, conversing with each other, or just taking a nap.

      I grow only more excited. It's funny though... Give them a year, they want a month. Give them a month, they want a day. Give them a day, they want the hour. When the beta releases that is... I don't care the day or hour. Knowing the exact time of release almost makes it more painful!

      I know the feeling Mikhael, wish I knew the exact date so i can plan accordingly. I was also wondering how fast it would take for the first mods to come out, or What the first mod would be

      Not that it's a big deal, but I think a couple of pixel in the chest area might better distinguish a female sprite/NPC from a male sprite/NPC. Besides that, everything looks okay. Can't wait till release.

      Technically you could roll for number of villagers then roll for 'all the same' or 'roll new characteristics for each one' as well, providing both identical and fraternal multiples.

      I imagine it would be as 'simple' as adding some coding to the start of the villager generation sequence that 'rolls' for the number of villagers generated, with the largest range being for one, but with increasing numbers at increasing rarity.

      e.g. Using a 1-100 range:

      1-70 = 1(singleton) [70]
      71-85 = 2(twins) [15]
      86-95 = 3(triplets) [10]
      96-99 = 4(quadruplets) [4]
      100 = 5(quintuplets) [1]

      It may not be hugely accurate to actual birth rates, but I think it does a good job of multiples integration without saturation.

      I'm sure the rate of identical quintuplets is something outrageous like 1 'births' out of 6 billion or so...?

      I'm pretty sure I bookmarked the page, I can provide the link if anyone is interested?

      Man this game is looking better and better :) i'm very happy you're handling it so professionally aswell and are taking the time to polish the beta release so us excited backers can get our hands dirty with chopping wood, crafting and building.

      Really? You wrote "...no two citizens in your town will look alike." What about twins? In the real world, twins do actually exist -- as in the case of Tom and Tony.

      @Kris ... i believe we'll just see what we've seen to date (unless Albert and Tony have cooked up something, and kept it lovingly under wraps)... nothing fluid either (water, lava, etc.)...

      This is exciting, I am crazy hoping for some way to see the villagers interactions and 'fun' AI-ness.. and we all know what fun leads to.

      BTW, what terrain types are being released in the initial go? We have already seen grasslands, hills, and trees. Anything more devious? Luxurious lakes surrounding vast diamond fields dilled with pits of lava? Randomness can lead to fun if the code is not mature yet.

      we'll have engineers, who will work with "steam pumps" and can "boost your town's productivity with miraculously advanced tools and weaponry"... perhaps some (eventual) steam powered mechanized transportation will be possible... im more in line with @Matt's suggestion however... ;)

      You can buy into the beta on the store on their site. You might have to talk to them though if you want to upgrade from a kickstarter purchase as they only include game and game+beta on there.

      @michelle yes, this is as simple as modding in new AI. Definitely possible!

      @Meaghan A couple of people have asked about that. Let me find out what's possible and I'll post an update when we're closer to release.

      I'd gotten so used to kickstater games being pushed back that I hadn't even been thinking about stonehearth being ready for beta soon. Great surprise! keep up the great work!

      What about personality modules? Some workers will pitch in and help if they finish and see more work to be done. Playful characters, and lazy workers who walk slow without motivation?
