The idea of this book was born from an experience, one that was very joyous and at the same time, heartbreaking. Spots was the name of the tortoise our 10 year old daughter found while riding her bike one day. He became her pet and she loved him dearly. After several short weeks with him, we realized Spots was actually an endangered gopher tortoise so we released him back to the wild. Our daughter, actually our entire family, was devastated and really missed our new friend. After talking through some ideas to keep the memory of Spots alive in our family, Kamden decided to write a book about Spots the Tortoise. Her goal was to write a book for kids that would allow them to share in the fun and joy that he brought our family.
The hard part is done, the story is written and it's amazing. Now we are looking to this awesome community for help to bring Kamden's dream to life.
Specifically, we encouraged Kamden to help us run a Kickstarter campaign so she can see the power of community rallying around a shared vision. We've done the math and we need just under $5,000 total. The first piece would be to hire an amazing children's illustrator. He is based in Kansas City and has done fantastic work. Beyond his costs, we are going to self-publish this book through Amazon and we'd like to have funds available to print at least 250 high quality hard cover books.
Risks and challenges
We think we have the two main things lined up - the illustrator (www.chrissembower.com) and the self-publishing and printing process through Amazon.
But we're not a publishing company. We're a family of 7. So there is risk in us not ever doing this before and fully understanding the process. But I think we're in a good place, and we'll do what it takes to help Kamden get this off the ground.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
