Early one cloudy, gray, windy day, Captain Devin woke up, stretched, and called his first mate, Orange Dog.
“Hey there! Do you want to go out sailing on my little red boat today?”
“Captain Devin!” Orange Dog sounded surprised. “Have you looked outside this morning? It is cloudy and gray, windy and wet. Are you sure it’s safe to sail?”
Captain Devin assured Orange Dog, “I have a good feeling about today…"
Devin and His Little Red Boat was originally written years ago as a bedtime story Demery would tell her young son Devin (he's real!) about his stuffed animals.
Years later, when Margaret offered to illustrate an original story in black-and-white as part of a silent auction fundraiser for their children's school, Demery jumped on it, and the Little Red Boat turned in to a real book.
It came out really cute, and we wanted to share it with family and friends. Aside from the cover, all the illustrations were in black-and-white when we printed the prototype.
Of course it costs money to get a project like this printed and into people's hands. The way Kickstarter works, is if we don't meet our minimum funding goal, nobody pays anything. But if you're interested in the project, pick one of the funding levels listed at the right!
If funded, this Kickstarter would accomplish the following things:
- Polish the book (editing and color).
- Make new illustrations to fill out the story.
- Get copies into the hands of people who want them.
- Obtain an ISBN so the book can be put up for public sale.
When we print the book for real, all the black-and-white illustrations will be this richly colored.
We are fully funded at $1,500, but if your pledges amount to much more than we expect, we will be able to also produce the following:
$2,000 - Bookmarks for everyone at Bronze and up.
$4,000 - A Captain Devin coloring book of the black-and-white images for everyone at Silver and up.
$6,000 - We donate copies of the book to local libraries.
There are bigger images over at the gallery on the Captain Devin website. Some of them are even in color already.
WANT MORE COPIES or to MAKE A DONATION? You can always add more money than the level you click on. At Bronze, Silver, or Gold level (not Basic), if you want to buy extra copies of the book, add $10 for each paperback, or $30 for each hardback. Let us know in the notes how many of each book you want, or if the extra funds are just to help us meet our goal.
And you know you want a limited edition tea towel… (Sorry, only at the $250 level.)
Risks and challenges
Between the two of us, we've handled budgets, large mailings, and producing printed material before. We're going with Amazon's Create Space for printing the paperbacks. Also, the prices we got for the small print runs we anticipate were pretty consistent among printers for hardbacks. If our first choice doesn't work out, there are many other providers out there. This project is low risk, because, while the content is novel (see what we did there), book printing is not.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
