ESP have been playing concerts around New England for the past six years, and have yet to document our soaring vocal harmonies and eclectic arrangements in a studio recording, leaving it to fans to enjoy our performances and live EP.
SO! Now that we are ready to take the plunge and document ourselves, here is how your pre-orders and financial support will be spent:
-We will continue our coaching with Kim Nazarian, renowned soprano and co-founder of the Grammy-award winning group the New York Voices. She and the group are certainly inspirations to us, and she has been working with us to tighten up our sound intermittently these past few years.
-OUR BAND! Mark Shilansky (piano), Keala Kaumeheiwa (bass) and Steve Langone (drums) are most-often the accompanying trio for ESP, and they gotta eat too, though it is satisfying for them to lay down a variety of swing, latin, and funk grooves behind the ladies of ESP. We have a pretty tight schedule of recording, too, to conserve yours and our hard-earned money, so the band is gonna have to knock out several tunes per day.
-STUDIO TIME and ENGINEERS! Studios and microphones and compressors and mixing boards and mic pre-amps cost money! We'll be working at some of the finest studios in the metro Boston area, with our primary engineer, local hero Huck Bennert, who's worked with Mark and Sandi on their projects before, as well as such artists as Lori McKenna, Chip Taylor, Mark Erelli, Bill Frisell, Vox One, Chucklehead (he was also their saxophonist!), Celia Slattery, Lauren Wool, Michelle Mailhot, the Wicked Pitches, Ronnie Earl, and Felicia Brady.
-MASTERING! ARTWORK! DUPLICATION! MECHANICAL ROYALTIES! DISTRIBUTION! PROMOTION! Putting the finishing touches on the recording, making it all look nice, making copies for you to enjoy (and putting it up on the web for download), PAYING the composers of the tunes we cover, letting people know about the recording once it's done.
Also, during this process of rehearsal and recording, we'll be keeping in touch with YOU the participants/facilitators of this project, with updates both written and recorded (audio and video).
Actually, here's another cool way of being involved with our project: you can be involved in our choice of repertoire!
Let me explain: ESP will be recording much of the material we have been sharing with you at our live gigs, many of which are arranged by pianist Mark Shilansky. These will include:
-our gospelly take on the jazz standard There is No Greater Love
-a version of My Foolish Heart which features Emily and transitions back and forth between a spacy jazz ballad and a 12/8 Afro-Latin feel
-Throw It Away, by the late, great Abbey Lincoln
-the swinging original composition Apple Brown Betty, written and arranged by friend of ESP pianist Bain Smith (with lyrics by Emily)
-John Hiatt's classic Have a Little Faith in Me
a big-band-emulating classic swing treatment of That Old Feeling, featuring Sandi on an original "vocalese" solo
Patrice swinging and scatting her way through Come Rain or Come Shine, which also wends its way through a Baroque fugue and a 3/4 samba feel
and many more...
YOU can HELP us choose some more tunes for our book!
If you select the appropriate rewards on this list, you can either:
MAKE A REQUEST that we arrange and record live in a room and post on YouTube with a special dedication to YOU (the tune will be chosen by you, but we have to dig it too... you don't have a blank check)
MAKE A REQUEST, volume 2, where, for a bit more money, we arrange a tune of your choosing (like I said, we have to dig it too) that will be featured on the new ESP CD!
ANYWAY.... In closing... we can't say enough how psyched we are to finally record this material in the studio and share it with you. Won't you join us by pre-ordering the CD or participating to a greater degree to help us meet our goal? To find out more about ESP vocal trio, visit http://www.esptrio.com
