Let's Build the Nation's First Cat Bar!
Denver Cat Company started 18 months ago with a vision: to be a safe haven for cats in search of their people and a place where the humans of Denver could enjoy much-needed kitteh time. 18 months and 150 adoptions later, it’s time to next level the cat café.
It's time for a cat bar!
With your continued support, we will give you an even better cat experience while bringing greater exposure to rescues. It’s time for cats + wine to become reality. You’ll enjoy wine, (or beer), surrounded by super playful cats!
"Will this be a safe environment for the cats?"
Absolutely! Kitty safety comes first. This will not be a crazy college bar, but a laid-back wine bar, (with great craft beer, too). The cats will have constant supervision by staff and we will exercise discretion when letting people into the cat lounge. There are plenty of places for a rowdy night out, the Denver Cat Bar will have a chill atmosphere designed for socializing with cats and people.
"Wait, wait, I like the cafe!"
We know you do, and we do too! That why the cafe is going to stay put, right where it is.
This will be a new, second location where you can interact with cats when they are at their most active, the evening. A more social environment for you, for the cats, and a more self-sustaining model that can augment the original Denver Cat Company Cafe.
We're talking cats + wine here, friends! Because you'll be having wine, we will be able to do away with the entry fee. Any cat lover can appreciate the appeal of a cat cafe that is open late into the evening. Cats are more active and playful at night, just like their human counterparts. You’ll also be a part of creating history!
- More cats will find their human; you'll help deserving cats find a new life.
- More people will have access to kitty time in a much more social environment.
- Play Exploding Kittens while enjoying a beer with your friends and watching cats zoom around you!
- People who can't have cats in their homes can get quality kitty time after work hours and in a place where they can meet other cat people.
- No cover charge!
- Did we mention wine?
- People who may not have had the opportunity to experience the awesomeness of cats will be able to do so and participate in the city's fantastic nightlife all at the same time!
- More adoptions!
- You get great rewards and help create cat history, (catstory)!
"So why are you doing this?"
Helping to create this space will not only give you what you've been asking for in terms of expanded and evening hours, but will also help us survive. Given the chance, we will double the number of cats we can house in a comfy, cozy, luxurious cat-centric lounge until they find homes.
With our track record of helping senior kitties, you can be sure we will continue to focus our efforts on cats who need it most. You will also be helping us keep the cat cafe concept in the hands of Denver's original cat lady -- someone who did it for the love of it, and has not (and will never) go “corporate."
"Are you just bringing cats in off the street?"
Nope. We'll be working with our current rescue partners to bring in fully vetted, (literally, they have a clean bill of health from a vet), cats suited to the environment.
Food and drink prep will be isolated from the cat areas. We will have a cat lounge that's fully separate for you to enjoy cat time, but you'll still be able to bring your snacks and drinks with you into the cat lounge.
We have a good relationship with the City and are already working on a design that will fully comply with Denver's health and building codes. Our aim is not to be a bar with the gimmick of cats, but a rescue that brings more rescuers in because they have a fantastic place to hang out.
Make Catstory with Us!
We cannot emphasize enough how much we need you to make this happen. There are no wealthy investors here, just our community - you - rooting for us. Unlike the cat cafe (for which we somehow made $15,000 work), our start-up costs for a bar are going to be much higher. All of what you help us raise will go towards construction costs, rent, and equipment.
Make history with us. Elevate the profile of adoptable cats and help create an exciting new addition to our thriving nightlife (and have wine). We have a proven track record of making magic for cats and people. We are a good bet. Will you help us?
Not in Denver? You'll help pave the way for projects like this across the country. Once Denver is up and running, other city planners will be more likely to approve the concept.
Here's a handy breakdown of how we plan to make use of our Kickstarter funding.
Should we be blown away with support, we'll make the Cat Bar even better! at $5,000 above goal, we'll be able to have an outdoor patio for people.
Should we reach $15,000 past goal, our patio will include a catio! Complete with grass and extra roaming space for the cats.
At $20,000 over goal, in addition to the patio/catio combo, we'll be able to install a custom cat staircase to a lofted retreat for shy cats to take a break from the action.
Risks and challenges
Denver Cat Company is a known entity - we have an excellent track record of making things happen. We are very confident that with your help, we can create the Denver Cat Bar. However, the food service business is notorious for issues with permitting, inspections, unexpected and unforeseeable challenges along the way, untold delays, so on and so forth. We have a finite amount of dollars, much less than most restaurateurs would be prepared to spend, but we plan on making that work to our advantage just as it did when we started Denver Cat Company. We will be efficient, economical and cost-conscious, and we will be highly motivated to get our doors open as quickly as humanly possible.
If all our efforts to speed things up and keep them efficient are for nought, we will leverage the obvious public support there is for our enterprise, and seek a business loan. One way or another, we WILL do this.
Besides unforeseen costs, we think it will be challenging for us to find a decent space in a hip neighborhood because Denver is so hot right now and there are much bigger players on the scene than Denver Cat Company. This is where we count on you, our fantastic network, to help us secure a good location.
Finally, we understand the challenges a unique business like a Cat Bar might face, what with the prohibitions on mixing animals and food/drinks. We have done our research and have several prototypes of how best to accomplish such a build out, such as NYC's Koneko and Portland's Purrington's Cat Lounge--and although there are no cat bars in the U.S., there are several full service cat cafes, and the same rules would apply to both types of establishments. It is entirely doable with the appropriate separations between food service area and cat lounge.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
