“It is absolutely necessary, for the peace and safety of mankind, that some of earth’s dark, dead corners and unplumbed depths be left alone; lest sleeping abnormalities wake to resurgent life, and blasphemously surviving nightmares squirm and splash out of their black lairs to newer and wider conquests.” —H.P. Lovecraft
The light of science has yet to banish the darkness of the supernatural from the Victorian world. Yet lurking beyond what is a mere shadow of horror is a far more darker and malevolent reality - a world where sanity can be shredded in an instant by the startling revelations that mankind is ultimately an insignificant speck of dust in an uncaring universe inhabited by immense and hostile beings from beyond space and time.
Inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft, Leagues of Cthulhu explores the mind-rending terror of the Cthulhu Mythos.
This book is set a generation earlier than Lovecraft's works, which were primarily based in the 1920s and 1930s. Lovecraft's canon has yet to become reality for the fictional world of Leagues of Adventure, meaning it is your adventurers who have the dubious honor of being the first to explore risen R'lyeh, scale the Mountains of Madness, or locate the lost city of Sarnath.
Is this a standalone RPG?
This book is an expansion designed for use with Leagues of Adventure, a roleplaying game of Victorian exploration, derring-do, and steampunk weird science. The contents will be compatible with other Ubiquity-powered games, though. However, if you want all the rich background information on the Victorian world into which Leagues of Cthulhu snugly fits, you'll need Leagues of Adventure.
Regardless of your Ubiquity setting of choice, possession of the Leagues of Gothic Horror core book is essential as we are not repeating the rules for using occult tomes or magic, nor the new horror-related Leagues, Talents, Flaws, and weird science devices, introduced in that volume.
What's the difference between this and Chaosium's Cthulhu by Gaslight?
While the two games are set in the same era, Gaslight, while a great book, focuses solely on Victorian Britain. Leagues of Adventure already covers the Victorian world, allowing us to focus the contents of this book purely on the Cthulhu Mythos of the late Victorian era.
While we've only done some preliminary writing for Leagues of Cthulhu, there is enough variation to put together a short preview. So that's what we've done!
Please note that this is a first draft, uses placeholder art, and doesn't have the final page background. The color image of "Victorian Jeff Combos" will be replaced, either by a backer of the Cthulhu Fhtagn level or someone from our artist's imagination.
Unlike our previous Leagues of Adventure books, Leagues of Cthulhu will be printed in our new format of choice - 6.69" x 9.61" (170 mm x 244 mm). The book is 96 pages, with black and white interior pages and a full color hardcover.
Within the book you will find:
- An overview of the Cthulhu Mythos as written by H. P. Lovecraft.
- A new skill for those brave enough to delve into the forbidden lore of the Cthulhu Mythos.
- New weird science devices and a new League of Adventure suitable for those who have peered beyond the illusion of reality.
- Sample characters (with art) and eight sample henchmen.
- Mythos magic and sanity-shattering tomes.
- A tour of dozens of Mythos locations around the globe.
- Alien gods, terrifying monsters, and dastardly cults guaranteed to test even the strongest mind.
- Advice on handling the Mythos, along with extra adventure seeds.
This project is designed to be simple for you to pledge and us to manage. As you can see, it contains only a few pledge levels. Unlike some of our earlier projects, there is no softcover option for this particular book - only hardcover or PDF. If you want additional physical copies you can add them to your pledge as Add-Ons.
The core pledge levels are as follows:
The cost of shipping will be calculated and collected after the Kickstarter concludes based on the actual costs incurred to ship. We will collect this via a pledge manager program. The following costs are estimates: UK £4, USA £5, EU £10, Rest of World £12.
Shipments will be sent from within both the US and the UK, thus minimizing any complicated customs or shipping issues.
Please be aware that customers are responsible for paying any customs duties for their country.
Supporting our Kickstarter is easy! Just follow the steps below:
1. Choose the pledge level you want. We have all of our recommended pledges detailed below.
2. Click "BACK THIS PROJECT" and select your reward level (called REWARD) on the page following.

Our main aim is to fund this book. If we raise enough additional money, we'll unlock sanity-shattering stretch goals. Don't worry if your pledge level doesn't contain a free set of dice (or if you want multiple sets) or a physical copy of stretch goal books - you can procure them as Add-Ons once they are unlocked.
Full Color Interior
(£6,500, app. $8,000)

Realm of Morpheus: The Dreamlands
(£10,000, app. $12,000)
This 64-page black and white, softcover comic book format book takes campaigns beyond the realm of reality and into the weird and wonderful land of dreams. Inside you'll find a gazetteer of wondrous places and strange denizens, rules for entering and altering the Dreamlands, and new character options.
(£11,500, app. $14,000)
As every Ubiquity fan knows, the system requires only the counting of odds and evens to determine the success of die rolls. This level funds the manufacture of six-sided dice with three blank faces and three bearing an Elder Sign symbol. The dice will be bundled into packs of 10.
Cutthroats & Cthulhu
(£15,000, app. $18,000)
This 64-page black and white, softcover comic book format book blends swashbuckling pirates with the Cthulhu Mythos. Sail the high seas, plunder treasure, and fight the sinister Cthulhu cults! Contents include a tour of the Spanish Main AND Barbary Coast, statistics for sailing ships, dastardly foes and devilish cults, and new character options.

Unlike many of our previous Kickstarters, writing for this project (aside from some preliminary work) has not yet commenced - that will start as soon as we know that you want this book in your hands. Those of you who have followed Triple Ace Games for a while know that Wiggy is no slouch when it comes to writing. We're not asking you to fund the writing or layout processes, though. We need your support to pay for the art and printing costs, thus enabling us to turn this book from a dream into reality.
Shipping isn't free to us, so we've had to include it, along with Kickstarter's fees, in the base funding goal. Naturally, both of these "extras" result in a higher base funding target.
Triple Ace Games began in 2008. The masterminds behind the company, Paul "Wiggy" Wade-Williams and Robin Elliott, had previously worked on The Savage World of Solomon Kane and Slipstream settings, among others, for Pinnacle Entertainment Group. Triple Ace Games has produced many popular settings, including Hellfrost, Leagues of Adventure, and All for One: Regime Diabolique, plus the Rocket Race and Cadaver card games. With many years of experience in the games industry, we continue to create fantastic games for everyone.
Risks and challenges
We have a great deal of experience in the field of games publishing, and we think we can deliver this project without problems.
However, things can go wrong with anything that goes into a manufacturing process. We have identified that delays in artwork delivery and delays in manufacturing could happen. So we have allowed additional time in our schedule to enable us to navigate any delay issues. If all goes to plan, we may even be able to deliver the project a little sooner.
We understand the printing process as we have printed a good number of books previous to this project, and we know how to communicate our ideas to the printer. We have discussed proofing requirements, so we know that when the printing press is started our book will match our specification requirements.
With projects like this there is nearly always something that costs more so it is good business sense to have some contingency for this, which we have built in to our costs.
With regard the dice stretch goal, our aim is to have everything ready to ship at the same time.
No matter what problems may occur we will always keep our backers and supporters informed of all issues so that you are aware of the situation and how we are dealing with it.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
