The Crusader

The Crusader is a powerful knight whose devotion to king or deity is so great that he has been blessed with divine powers. A paragon of virtue, the Crusader commands the battlefield and defends the weak. Brave and bold, the Crusader is always at the front of any fray, guarding his allies against harm with armor and faith.

What is a Crusader?

The Crusader is a knight sworn to serve their king and country, to protect the lives of those who cannot protect themselves. A Crusader will pledge his or her allegiance to one of the kings or pantheons. They will abide by their laws, serve the people, defend their lands and travel great distances to strike down the enemy. This is the life of the Crusader, to prove their allegiance to any they serve. As the Crusader fights in the name of their god or king, their loyalty grows which allows them access to a vast assortment of benefits blessed by their lord. Their unwavering faith grants them the ability to deliver divine judgment and intervention. Many stories tell of the “white knight” in full plate armor on the hilltops accompanied by their squire proudly carrying the king’s banner. Wherever the Crusader may travel, whoever they may serve, word of their high loyalty spreads and the citizens will offer themselves up to become a squire under their stead. The squire yearns to please the knight, as they know they can easily be replaced. As the Crusaders loyalty and fame become stronger, so too does the squire that follows them. It has been known for Crusaders to change their allegiances from one country to another, though there may be consequences involved.

Crusaders are leaders, motivators and champions. Their leadership is inspiring to others around them, strengthening them in various ways and encouraging them to win the battle. Some Crusaders have been seen to focus their efforts in harnessing the powers of their faith. While still holding shield and weapon in hands, their attacks mostly consist of divine magic. The undead are abominations in the eyes of these shining knights and they use the power of the gods to banish them.

The Crusader shields their allies from the enemy onslaught using a giant tower shield. On Terminus, the size and shape of the shield can be as important as the metal it’s made from or the magic imbued upon it. Larger shields covering wider areas are easier to block with. Being a master of warfare, the Crusader is very capable of wielding most combinations of weaponry, from dual swords to giant axes. Their arsenal also consists of various spears, hammers & lances. While wielding two swords or a giant two-handed weapon, their damage is increased significantly as is their ability to destroy enemies both living and undead. Tales have been told of the Crusader’s magnificence when during intense battles they have been seen to grab a second shield. The Crusader may dual wield shields to protect his group and bash his opponents. Some have their shields turned into dangerous weapons. The safety of the Crusaders allies comes first and they never hesitate to put themselves in the way of danger. Whether it is healing wounds, empowering allies or striking with holy resolution, Crusaders have become a symbol of honor, valor and justice.

Two shields?!?! I was sitting in a group one day years ago and thought of how epic that would be, EPIC!

    2. Creator Raphael diSanto on February 3, 2014

Sorry, Gott, but tanking in EQ was far more organic than just turn the mob and press two buttons. I knew warriors who did that. They never got groups, despite being in better gear.

    3. Creator Duke L33t0 on January 27, 2014

I love to tank sign me up. Two shield's i'm there!

    4. Creator Gott on January 25, 2014

That's why I said 6+ seconds. That's why that twig was nerfed. Yeah, tanking in EQ wasn't brain surgery. No offense. You didn't have to actually do anything in the game. Read someone's How To... Get a particular weapon... play enough or have enough people willing to feed you good armor... turn a mob, press two buttons.

    5. Creator Mavric on January 25, 2014

      That's why I played a Mage Artic

    6. Creator Arctic_Slicer on January 25, 2014

Gott, you should only hit taunt if you loss hate; taunt was a hate list modifier that, when successful, put you on top of the hate list +1. Just mashing taunt is not effective and could cause the skill to be down when you do need it. Playing a warrior effectively also required knowing about how the combat mechanics of the game work and the math involved; however none of the formulae are explicitly spelled out and required players to discover them through the usage parser bases tests. How many warriors actually knew that the hate generated by their weapons was equal to weapon damage + damage bonus/swing? How many people know the proc rate formula? Knowing the answers to these questions was essential in choosing the right weapon setup required to hold aggro well. In the early era two handed weapons were much better for warriors to use to maintain aggro however many of them were ignorant of how combat in that game actually worked and preferred to dual wield even though in most cases they shouldn't have been. Knowing stuff like this is what separated a good warrior from a bad one and made the class far more deep than most people give it credit for.

Auto attack and kick and taunt every 6+ seconds? A monkey could do that. Monkeys DID do that... and have been bragging ever since how they were the main tank of the #1 guild on X server. By the way, has anyone ever met the tertiary tank of the 12th ranked guild on Luclin server?

    8. Creator darren williams on January 24, 2014

was a paladin in vsoh so this naturally makes me lean to this class a awful lot and 2 shields wow i can see that being awesome fun!

    9. Creator Arctic_Slicer on January 24, 2014

Grott, I'd prefer them to be more like EverQuest than Vanguard; EverQuest was much more streamlined and didn't require you to have 50 different buttons to tank.

    10. Creator Gott on January 24, 2014

Hopefully, the tanking mechanics are more V:SOH and less... everything else.

    11. Creator Tanya Stinson on January 24, 2014

Not sure how dual wielding shields will appear...especially if they were tower shields. But hey, it sounds cool. I suppose their damage might be decreased if they were dual wielding as a trade off for the missing melee weapon? (Although getting bashed in the head with a metal shield would certainly smart) =p

    12. Creator Endo_Roboto on January 24, 2014

Awesome. Dual shielding? Epic. And people, Dark Knight is the SK as Crusader is like the Pally. I'm almost definite there will be a dedicated "Warrior" class as well. Pretty much mirrors of EQ classes but with sweet specialization roles.

    13. Creator Bryan Bessette on January 24, 2014

I love the updates. Keep them coming.

If people don't like them, they can shut off notifications, but apparently not before coming to the comment section to piss and moan about it. lol

    14. Creator Christopher McGinnis on January 24, 2014

Sounds like a good character.. Though I am the Healer !!

    15. Creator Scott Beavers on January 24, 2014

Yes, great detail. Please do this for all classes, future and past. Also, get more of these details out ASAP. :)

    16. Creator Troy_Costisick on January 24, 2014

This is the best class update we've gotten yet! I can't wait to try this class.

    17. Creator Corpselocker on January 24, 2014

Ha! Two shields. I can see the character wielding them like two symbols smashing anything in between. Probably not a solo class :P

    18. Creator Taliefer on January 24, 2014

it seems more like they combined warrior and paladin into a new class type. not really what i was personally looking for, but close enough to keep me on board.

id still prefer a straight warrior class without the "devoted to king or god" stuff. but like i said, close enough and i think i could live with this

    19. Creator Treyekh on January 24, 2014

I personally love the updates daily and could easily stand bi-daily. Really helps to make us feel like they are going hard on this non stop. Especially right now when people are checking back here daily (I know they are) to see whether or not they feel justified in backing this yet.

      Nice job so far guys.

    20. Creator Treyekh on January 24, 2014

That sounds really cool. Getting me all hot and bothered. Might be time to fire up Project 1999 again ;)

    21. Creator Brandon H on January 24, 2014

Just wanted to add my own praise for the more fleshed out class description in this update. It's really great to see VR taking our feedback seriously and making enhancements where it makes sense. Hopefully, additional detail like this will help draw more backers!

    22. Creator Noah on January 24, 2014

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand, updates muted. Only you and Double Fine adventures send out this many updates in such a short amount of time!!

    23. Creator Aetiyen on January 24, 2014

I much prefer this style of class write up. It feel far more fleshed out and much more distinct.

Love this class. You're tempting me from my enchanter

    24. Creator ThreeBeastSmile on January 24, 2014

Heh, dual wield shield class got me thinking of a little known - and probably long forgotten of by now - Chinese borne MMO "Heroes of Three Kingdoms" and it's 'Gauntleteer' class. Basically is a class with two bucklers attached at the wrist heh.

I see how you're doing the classes now; kind of like it. Any word of Beastlord being a 'path' under shaman archetype now eh? ;)

    25. Creator Nelson Nunez Jr on January 24, 2014

      TWO SHIELDS!
I actually NEED to see this to experience life to the fullest.

    26. Creator Liam Hall on January 24, 2014

      Pretty flipping sweet.

    29. Creator Oberon on January 24, 2014

To the people who were upset there was no warrior. This is your class. Melee only path.

    30. Creator Flex on January 24, 2014

greatly improved class description.not only am i excited to play a crusader, but this is the most exciting update VR has posted to date. keep up the improvements, its showing.

    31. Creator Aeiouy on January 24, 2014

Dual wielding shields with a squire pet sounds good to me
