Introducing... The Cleric

The Cleric Lore

The Cleric is battle-ready priest devoted to spreading the influence of his or her pantheon while adventuring within the wilds of Terminus. Armed with weapons and abilities of divine might, the cleric performs benevolent deeds upon those in need and keeps his allies from the clutches of death. In Terminus, where the reach of a pantheon has been met, the cleric goes forth to act as a harbinger of faith.

What is a Cleric?

The Cleric is a healer. The battle Cleric stands toe-to-toe against their enemy without fear capable of decent armed combat and spell casting granted through divine favor. They don full heavy plate armor, a shield in offhand and typically flourish in the use of maces, scepters, warhammers, flails and even two-handed hammers capable of delivering heavy damage. There have been cases where the Cleric would focus their efforts more on their spiritual and divine blessings, thus taking on a magical offense and defense. In these cases they’ve been seen wearing bright, radiant robes and are known to wield two-handed staves or scepters with a tome in offhand. The lack of heavy armor makes them more susceptible to melee and artillery damage but they are more agile to dodge and channel their divine energies. In rare occasions, Clerics have been capable of opening the window to their faith, allowing them to manifest astral Paladins from faith energy. The power of these sentries is derived from the strength of their belief making a seasoned cleric a force to be reckoned with.

Their prayer books are normally scribed with the writings of many ancient rites, marks and blessings. They can deal with many harsh situations from smiting their foes, healing or reviving fallen brethren, to cleansing the undead. In Terminus, there are many lawful deities from the various planes but their faith typically lies with the heroes belief from the spirit they are bound. Though the deities are different they have a common goal to ensure law and order. Because of the different deities, the Cleric may possess various abilities and blessings that will enhance their effectiveness on and off the battlefield.

      Very excited for this class!

As an EQer from 1999 through 2012 (and still have one active Gold account, though I never log on) I have to say I'm excited by the idea of getting back to the idea that the group is the way to progress. (I know-- lots of folks hated that, hence WoW being super-solo'able... and LOTRO is perhaps even easier, just to name 2.)

And as someone who boxed druid main and cleric box (2 computers) and was part of CH chains on both at one time, I love that this cleric seems to be built on the original EQ cleric concepts.

I'm really looking forward to seeing the other classes!

I just hope I live long enough to play Pantheon's games-- I'm already 70 :)

I don't even want another EQ.
I still have a bunch of accounts in it even if they are dormant. With some double digit millions of pp between them. =)
I'm just sick and tired of seeing the same MMO again and again and again. Each time with a different name.

@Gazz - actually, so much was unbalanced in EQ that it would have been hard to tell.

There's a reason why essentially every MMO after EQ has put their primary healers in lighter armor, and it's not because they're all dumber than Brad.

Between the people who can't get away from the desire to make this into another EQ, and the signs that the devs haven't actually learned anything in the last fifteen years - I'm out.

      @ George N.

Cleric melee (OR heavy armour) wasn't a balancing nightmare in EQ. =)

It's not so much what you have for equipment but what you do with it.
What skills / abilities tie into it and what your skill caps are.
With the same AC, a warrior tanking and a cleric tanking was a world of a difference.

Maybe a "tanking cleric" gets a temporary and cumulative malus to spellcasty things everytime he gets hit. Then he could still tank well (at least survive for a bit) but not do clericy things as well at the same time.
There are many ways to adjust balance. Maybe even without nerfing the actual effect of heavy armour. =)

The Paladin (pet?) bit sounds interesting... but what if this was a dual purpose spell?

If the cleric casts the spell, he summons this paladin... thing.

If he casts the same spell on a companion, this PLAYER is imbued with paladin-esque powers. Extra damage vs undead, self-heal proc, and you know... clericy stuff? =)

It also reduces spell book bloat and allows the cleric to use this bit of power in a setting where pets are a no go.
(Hands up if you haven't had a pet pull in Sebilis!)

AND it limits the buff madness because either way there will only be ONE paladin.
(I played a shaman in Velious days. Dark times to be a buffer. =)

Cleric is a must, If you can keep the character movements silky smooth and life like as you guys did in Van Guard you will win over a lot of people regardless. Its going to be hard to beat the VG characters but its going to be fun watching give it a shot.

      Loam will like this!

Benjamin Babeshkin, CCH rotations were actually one of my favorite mechanics about EverQuest raiding. There is just something epic about having multiple clerics working together with perfect timing to keep a tank a alive against a mob with insane DPS I remember doing the Avatar of War with a 10 cleric chain, so epic.

I`ve read everything I can find about this project and I have to say it seems very promising to me. There is at least 100 pros to offset the one "high fantasy" con and I`ll take that deal :)

Sounded good so far, I personally play warrior / tank in most games, but I always show earned respect to my cleric. This one sounds like something I can trust my life with.

Vanguard Clerics were awesome fun. You definitely was not stuck just hitting heal button.

    13. Nelson Nunez Jr on

      EQOA Cleric maybe?
I remember you could toss a heal on someone and it would heal the person about 3-4 times before it wore of. It was like a way to preemptively heal someone without having to spam the heal spell.
It was more fun to heal this way because I could do something else in that time frame.

From a Cleric main, I just wanted to thank your team again. I am very pleased with the description!

Glad you all are enjoying the Cleric reveal! We're really excited to unveil it as our first class and looking forward to playing it in-game. :)

Ack. You've made the D&D mistake at step one. Heavy armor + healing + 'decent melee ability' = balance nightmare.

    17. P99MaxalasBLUE on

Glad to see these start showing up.I do not play Cleric myself, but I like to stand real close to them!

    18. Pharone The Gnome on

I ran the original Cleric support forums for Vanguard, so you can imagine how excited I am about this class :)
      Battle Cleric for the win!

Sounds really cool! Thanks for the update :)

My main in EQ was a Cleric... ahh... the CH chain on raids... memories...
