Lonely Soldier Monologues a play by Helen Benedict.

THE LONELY SOLDIER MONOLOGUES by Helen Benedict is a play entirely in the words of the women veterans from the US Military that she interviewed over several years for her book "The Lonely Soldier; The Private War of Women Serving in Iraq".

In 2013, Liminal Space held 2 readings of her play at the Arts Theatre (West End) & Brixton East, London. The response was astounding. People were leaving the theatre outraged, shocked, educated and wanting change. This was proof that this play needed to be shared with a wider audience to stimulate debate and progressive change.

We need your help to stage this play for one month at The Cockpit, London in May 2015.

Along with her articles about the sexual assault of women in the military, The Lonely Soldier (book and play) inspired the award-winning documentary, The Invisible War, shown to acclaim at Sundance, 2012.

Benedict has testified twice to Congress on behalf of women soldiers and lectures at colleges and military academies in the USA about gender justice and the military

Also, The Lonely Soldier (book and play) inspired the February 2011 class action suit against the Pentagon and Secretaries of Defense on behalf of military women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted while serving in the US Military.

LONELY SOLDIER MONOLOGUES is a very important play. It bravely tells the story of these women's experiences inside the armed forces. These are experiences that until now, have been often unheard and commonly suppressed from the public.

It is important that these insights are shared with the public to promote discussion and debate to improve the lives of women soldiers who are serving their country, everywhere.

Risks and challenges

This is a play that many people within the armed forces may not want told. Of all reported sexual assaults in the US military it is estimated that only 5% lead to prosecution with less than 2% leading to conviction.

But this is not just a US Military problem. IT IS ALSO RELEVANT IN THE UK as seen in the tragic case of Corporal Anne-Marie Ellement who sadly committed suicide in 2011 at her barracks in Bulford, Wilts. England. The coroner at her inquest in 2014 said the following " Bullying and the lingering effect of an alleged rape were factors in the suicide"
Emily Norton of the Human Rights Organisation LIBERTY said
"Soldier or civilian, your human rights require protection".

Helen Benedict was in the UK when the readings were staged in 2013 and will be in the UK for the production at The Cockpit in May 2015 and will be be conducting Q&A sessions regarding her work. She is still fighting the fight for equality, acknowledgment and justice for women.

All of the stories told in this play are true accounts from real soldiers. There is no embellishment. Just the facts.
