Imagine a world where there are people that have both a human and an animal form, and they can change shape between the two at will. Most people don't know they exist, and they are waging a secret, mystical war against each other.
This is the world that I created for the first novel I had published - The Shadow Chaser. I revisited this world again when I wrote The Bringer of War, a sequel that takes place three months later. Both novels have been well-received by fans and I am frequently asked when I will have the next book available in the Sheynan series.
This Kickstarter is my attempt to make that happen. For this project, I have teamed up with a publisher: Apocalypse Ink (http://www.apocalypse-ink.com/). They are willing to publish the third book, and re-publish the first two. All three books are going to be available individually as well as in one massive collection.
As part of this process, I am going to rewrite and fine tune the first two novels. The storyline will be the same, but otherwise they will be given a complete author makeover. The publisher is also going to provide new cover art for each of those books (as well as a whole host of other things a publisher does for a manuscript). Once those are complete, I will write the third novel.
The first two books will only be available as eBooks. The third book and collection will be available in both formats through this project. A physical copy of the third book will only be available through this project; it will be a limited print release.
Who Am I?
My name is Dylan Birtolo and I'm a writer, avid gamer, and professional sword-swinger. Other than my novels, I have written several short stories published in various anthologies. I have also written gaming fiction and helped co-author a few gaming books. You can see a list of most of my published fiction here: http://dylanbirtolo.com/released.html. About Apocalypse Ink Productions
Apocalypse Ink productions is a small publication house specializing in dark speculative fiction and non-fiction books on writing in the internet age. With authors like Jay Lake, Jennifer Brozek, and Ivan Ewert, as well as forthcoming authors like Peter M. Ball and Dylan Birtolo, AIP is certain that readers will find exactly what they are looking for.
These books will be available with a rolling release and I will send out the eBooks as soon as they are available. Here is the schedule for when each book will be available:
- The Shadow Chaser - March 2014
- Bringer of War - September 2014
- The third novel and the entire collection - March 2015
I don't have much to offer in the way of additional options, but I did want to offer an option to get extra copies of the books if anyone wants them. Plus, this will let you get the third novel in addition to the collection if you order a higher tier and want both physical novels.
- $30 - Additional copy of the third novel
- $70 - Additional copy of the collection
Here are some stretch goals to strive for. With each of these levels, anyone who requested at least an eBook will get the reward.
$7000 - ACHIEVED! - Everyone receive a high definition digital copy of the artwork used for the books.
$8000 - ACHIEVED! - Everyone receives a free eBook copy of Famished: The Farm by Ivan Ewert. http://www.apocalypse-ink.com/page/More-Information-Famished-The-Farm.aspx
$9000 - ACHIEVED! - Everyone receives a free eBook copy of Caller Unknown by Jennifer Brozek. http://www.apocalypse-ink.com/page/More-Information-Caller-Unknown.aspx
$10000 - ACHIEVED! - If we manage to break five figures, I promise that I will bring my full suit of armor to GenCon 2014 and will wear it for at least one full day. Yes, I am promising to bring the entire suit all the way to Indianapolis and gear up for your amusement. It should be entertaining!
$12500 - ACHIEVED! - We all enjoy a little bit of laughing at each other, especially if there was no permanent damage done. If this level is met, I will release a video (probably on here through an update for backers only) of my flipping over the horse in full armor. Yes, I have a video of it, but no one outside of the Knights has ever seen it. Maybe I'll even get one of my video buddies to do some entertaining editing.
$18000 - A Knight's Day. 300% is an insane stretch goal to hit, so it seems only fair to have an insane reward associated with it. If we get this far, I will make a short film of my alter ego, Sir Anthony, engaging in modern activities and seeing how people (not in on it, of course) react. Things like walking a dog in the dog park or going into that Seattle-staple, Starbucks, and ordering a drink. It should be entertaining!
Risks and challenges
The major risk with this project is the creation of the content. While the first two novels have been written, rewriting them completely will take quite a bit of time. This is why I have made the delivery dates as spaced out as they are: to give me time to rewrite the books and give the publishing company enough time to edit the manuscripts and develop new covers.
On the plus side, since this is an individual work, it requires very little collaboration from others. That minimizes the possibility of there being any delays.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
