"courage," a dance work featuring stone flute by Kazuya Yokozawa
Directed and Choreographed by Abel Coelho
July 13&14 @8PM / Kumu Kahua Theatre - 46 Merchant St, Honolulu, HI
Kazuya Yokozawa plays the stone flute. In fact, he is the only professional stone flute player in the world... Ruinedmap dance company is proud to collaborate with him on a new work that will feature his talents paired with unforgettable choreography.
During the course of the performance he will play several flutes, some of which he carved by hand, and others which are “found” stone flutes – rocks with holes in them – from the seaside. The sound from a stone flute is unexpectedly piercing and strong, and seems to directly speak to some primal part of the consciousness.
The work courage will be a journey about effort: a stylized and entirely abstract struggle of will - the drives that push us into being. Conflict, cooperation, the irrational, and the temptation to self-destruct are primary motivations of this journey.
By using the thin line between specific choreographies and authentic movements we create an emotional tension that draws empathy from the audience, creating art that truly speaks to the human being by awakening viewers’ somatic responses. And, in doing so, produce a work that encourages contemplation of compassion and interdependence.
By contrasting this dance style with stone flute and a set design of organic fiber, we create a piece that totally bypasses the culture of entertainment, and instead serves as a compelling work of abstract live art.
This piece features the "Genmani-gumi," dancers Gwen Arbaugh, Spencer Garrod, and Junco Mizumochi.
Your donations will be used to bring Mr. Yokozawa to Hawai'i - and to fund documentation of this piece. Help make a unique and completely new dance piece happen!
