About this project

The Man Who Writes the Dreams.

The book!
The book!

Watch the video first

- It's got all the important stuff on it!

Kia ora guys, I'm Pera, and I'm from Otaki. I'm a father, husband, bank manager, charity founder, and rapper. Every now and then I write these letters to my daughter, and between those nows and thens, I write stories.

I wrote this book for my two-year-old daughter, to tell her the importance of following dreams. Wanna write and publish a book? Go and do it! Wanna be a politician? Go and do it!

Now I'm self-publishing the story to role-model that message.

It's a short, Young Adult novel called the Man who Writes the Dreams. I've spent the last year rewriting and editing, and now that it's done, I think it’s good enough to share with you too - the message is just as important for any of us as it is for her. But more pressing than sharing the story is my need to sell enough copies to meet the publishing costs - her copy being printed and tucked away is 95% of my motivation. I want it ready to read when she’s older, because who knows what will happen between now and then.

It's a fantasy story aimed at teenagers and adults, young or old. The theme and messages are important for all ages, we all have dreams, we all have the chance to chase them, and we all pay the price if we don't.

It's my first book, so definitely won't be winning any Pulitzer Prizes - I've made music long enough to know your first one is never the best - but my mum reckons it's good, and my mates think it's choice.

Here's a sample (chapter one):

 Summary:

The man who writes the dreams doesn’t usually leave his desk, he’s far too busy shaping the dreams that we are all then tasked with turning into reality - building the world around us. Lately, however, dark forces have been pulling the dreamers away and convincing them to work for The Machine instead - turning cogs and leaving dreams undone, upsetting the Earth’s balance. So, he arrives in the home of our main character, Matthew, pulling him along on a journey of education and discovery as they do battle with the evil forces that campaign against dreams and their doers.

At times dark, light, and everything in between, The Man who Writes the Dreams is an action packed, possibly true, definitely thought provoking tale of humankind’s most epic battle. It is good versus evil, night versus day, us versus them. You might be surprised which side you’ve already chosen.

To get the book printed I need a batch of at least one hundred ordered, and that's where you come in.

I'm hoping there are at least one hundred people out there who will buy a copy of the book. That will mean I can afford to get the printing run done, put my daughter's copy away on a shelf somewhere, and go to sleep knowing the story will be there when she's ready. The messages in the book will also be out in the world where they should be.

Kickstarter lets you choose different rewards, depending on how much you want to spend.

If you don't know how Kickstarter works, the project won't be funded, and you won't pay anything unless we reach the goal. It's all or nothing. So any help you can give spreading the word will help get the book printed and is much appreciated!

Choose the reward from the list that you best like the look of, and click it. Then when you're done share it on Facebook, Twitter, and whatever else you use to tell your friends about the cool things you did today.

Goal 1: $2500 - this book gets printed WOOHOO WE'VE HIT GOAL 1!

This is break even point after I've paid for the awesome artwork, the printing, the layout/formatting, Kickstarter fees, Facebook advertising, and tax. Reaching $2500 means I can get the book printed and stash a copy away for my little girl. I won't make any money - but I've got a full-time job, that's not why I wrote it.

You can help us get there by buying a copy and sharing this page with your friends.

Stretch goal 1: $6000 - this book gets printed, and my next illustrated book does too

If we reach this goal, I can pay for printing and publishing costs of The Man Who Writes the Dreams, as well as the cover design, illustrations and printing for my next book, Lucy and Tohora, which is 60% finished... and I'm really excited about!

You can help us get there by buying a copy and sharing this page with your friends.

Thank you for helping make this dream about dreams, come true.

Pera

** Note: for The Kapiti Island reward you will need to get to Paraparaumu yourself.

Risks and challenges

That the internet breaks and therefore the story is lost from Google Docs forever, and I then need to re-type it from the printed copy mum keeps locked in the safe buried under the feijoa tree. Probably not going to happen.

    Talking stories on Kapiti Island

Come and hang out for the day on Kapiti Island where you'll enjoy an island cooked lunch and I'll talk you through the story's creation, show you how to not draw character sketches, and generally give you all sorts of questionable, mostly untested advice on writing and creating. That's right, advice from the guy who has only (nearly) published one book in his entire life.
